Here's a snippet of what I get up to of an evening.. As you can see, Hamilton certainly keeps me busy!.. The basses I'm playing are an Overwater Jazz Bass 5 and a Lakland Hollowbody.. Let me know in the comments if you'd like to hear more about the equipment I use in the show.. and feel free to get in touch regarding lessons.

Listening to Hamilton for the umpteenth time but this time with headphones on and have been focusing on the bass. Well played indeed! Impressive swapping 4 instruments for that many songs. Makes me want to dust mine off and have "what if" fantasies. The bass is such a big part of this musical. Had to see it with me own eyes, now back to listening.

This is amazing! Thank you so much for this lovely in the pit view. It’s always so easy to forget all the hard work and non-visible actors that make the magic happen. Hi there.. Thanks for the comment there.. Those black things on the left of the keyboard are mod wheels (short for modulation) but aren’t used in this show. The keyboard is a controller keyboard called an ‘Artruria Keylab 25’ and the sounds all come from ‘Mainstage’ which provides sounds for all the keyboards in the show. I think that particular Artruria model may have been superseded now, but they’re good, worth checkin out. Cheers, Ian

Hey Ian! Fellow pit bass player here. Just wondering what the materials for Hamilton look like in regards to what's notated and what isn't. I'll bet the lick 2:20 is in ink, right? What about some of the other fills, like :45-:55?
@iankingbass
@iankingbass 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Ben.. The parts for Hamilton are pretty heavily written to be honest, right down to the articulation for each note.. The long fill at 2:20 is written in for example.. The earlier section at :45-:52 was slash chords and I picked up on a nice run that the US bass player had put in on the album, but :48-52 is more me..

Hi there.. Thanks for the message.. Yeah I just take a feed out of the personal mixer into a little portable audio recorder, and then film it on a Go Pro.. The mixers we have at Hamilton are Roland ones, but I'm well versed on the Avioms too.. All the best, Ian

Hi Anthony.. Thanks for that, very kind.. There are occasional effects being used in Hamilton (octavers, chorus/tremolo on occasion!).. but generally it's just the bass into a Providence Audio Dual Bass Station pedal, which I use to balance the levels coming out of my main Overwater bass and the Lakland Hollowbody for a couple of tunes.. pretty straight through to be honest.. I'll be back there next week and I must do a 'rig rundown' vid when setting up as I've had a few queries about the gear side of things.. Cheers, Ian

Hey Ian! This is fantastic, thanks for posting! I notice when you're on the acoustic bass with pizz. you're plucking the string quite high up the neck? I've seen bass players in more acoustic settings really putting the meat of maybe 2 fingers through the string much closer to the bridge, and their fingers take a real beating - I'm no bassist, and am just curious to know if you're playing further from the bridge because you're closer mic-ed, because you're looking for a different tone or something else?? Cheers :)
@iankingbass
@iankingbass 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Laurence.. Thanks for the message.. Well, I guess it’s a combination of being sat down (so I’m in more of a classical position) and having the instrument so well mic’ed that I don’t feel the need to batter the bell out of the instrument to get a half decent sound out of it.. I’m also preserving my fingers to a certain extent, playing a 3 hour show, of 51 songs, 8 times a week! All the best, Ian

@@iankingbass Thanks for your reply! Makes complete sense and sounds great. I was also wondering about your thoughts on playing the extremely precise pads written by Alex Lacamoire - does it make you happy because you know exactly what to do to play the show exactly how LMM and AL want it? Or do you find it a bit too prescriptive after the 300th play? Cheers

@iankingbass
@iankingbass 3 жыл бұрын
Hi George.. I use 35” scale length 5-string basses.. the extra inch adds that much needed tension to the 5th string.. Some basses have ‘through body stringing’ too, which can help.. I tend to have the pickup balance slightly more to the bridge pickup and will play further towards the bridge when I need things to punch through.. hope that helps
