A lot of people do it like that. My personal favorite is Al Cisneros' work in OM. Managed to keep up the trance-like vibe of the Advaitic Song album without covering up the other instruments with a bass tone that is already fuzzed out.

This video leaves me speechless every damn time. The melody is beautiful, each verse is powerful, and groovey, each transition flows like wine at an Italian wedding. Amazing display of musicianship.

As a metal guy I love hearing this. Sadly in my genre bass is often too underappreciated with Cliff Burton really being one of the few who got recognition tho he's been gone for closer to 40 than 30 years.

For me, the good metal bassists are genius in terms of tone. Really few people come close to Cliff in terms of skill, and none in terms of composing. I feel like if metal bassists expanded out of tremolo picking, the scene would look much better. Slap is such an aggressive technique, it fits in perfectly. Why isnt it used? Well it is by a few, like primus, BUT THEY ALWAYS MAKE IT FUNKY. I've heard a cover of spirit crusher by death that showed exactly what I meant. Also, bass solos? Why are they always on the low frets and last about 10 seconds? I want high fret distortion long bass solos. But where will the lowend be then? There are a few options. 1. Tap the lows and highs. 2. Make the bass solo part less reliant on bass. 3. Gainy guitar, maybe octave pedal. Bassists should also take more guitar techniques if they use the pick so much anyway. Sweep? Do it! High bends? Do it! They should also generally use more effects, like whammy and wah. Harmonics are underused in metal as well in general, but especially on bass. In short the bassists in metal arent underrated, they are just not creative enough.
