When I was a little kid, my father, who was a musician, late at night would make me sit and watch over and over again a documentary about Deep Purple that he had in VHS. He didn't oblige me, I was always pretty happy. In this documentary there were huge chunks of California Jam. I was always mesmerized at Ian Paice's drum solo. I couldn't believe how he could keep one time with his hands, and another with the kick drum, until he matched both tempos. I thought he must have had two brains to manage two tempos at once. My dad (a bass player) always told me - listen to Ian Paice. That's the drummer. I'm glad he showed that to me. To this day, when I think of a Drummer, it's Ian Paice I think of.

I am so glad that he included Ringo and used the "perfect" remark. Notice that Ian uses the "matched grip" of Ringo that influenced a new generation of drummers.

Every single strike that Ringo made, was exactly what and where it was supposed to be.

The average listenser doesn't know what to make of Ringo. He isn't flashy so he doesn't stand out. But musicians... almost to a man, all praise his work. There is a reason all of the Beatles kept working with him after the band broke up. Because he made the song better! He is one of the best ever.

Every time during my life, discussing about who is the best drummer (in rock music), I say - Ian Paice. And I always had a one main argument - he is first of all a musician and only then a drummer. He plays music, not pounds a beat. And now, watching this video, I understud how right I always was.

I just watched a couple of live versions of “Black Night” from 70 and 72 and whoah!!! On the strength of those tracks, I’ve had to re-evaluate my thoughts on which band(and era) I’d consider to be the greatest rock band of all time...The Purple of the early 70s has got to be thee most incredible band ever...Without question...

Thank you Paicey. When you mentioned Carmine I was reminded of the story Jon Lord told about how he got to jam with Hendrix. Great night except that Carmine would not get off the kit and so Paicey didn't get the chance to play with Jimi. Real shame for Ian and Jimi.

I was lucky enough to see /hear Buddy R live in the early 80s. I've seen no one better. And I've seen my share, Mr Paice was one, the Professor , C Palmer, B Ward, B Bruford, T Aldridge, A White, J Dolmayan to name off the top of my head. Sorry for rambling Thanks for posting Mr. Paice

Ian would definitely be on my list. So would Joe Morello. One of the things that separate Deep Purple from their imitators is the jazziness.

Your drumming on everything, but especially the Burn album left a HUGE impression on me and it might be the album that I've listened to more than any other. The trinity of iconic rock drummers for me has always been Paice, Mitchell and Bonham. If there’s a tier two of rock drummers who inspired me it would be Appice, Baker Barrymore Barlow and Moon the loon. Paice combined power and groove with precision in a way that I’d never heard before. It is still a great thrill each time I here those timeless signature licks. To have his level of power and that touch is such a special gift. Hearing from the source which players helped him hone his craft is beyond inspiring

This is a really great video. I am going to watch Part II but I already can say: "I expected these choices and these comments". I expected that because from the 70s, when I started playing the Deep Purple LPs, I obviously felt how much Ian Paice was swinging and rocking at the same time, giving the music power and precision, but with also a beautiful swinging flow, sometimes evident, sometimes subtle (and it's not only a matter of subdivisions). So finding Earl Palmer and Joe Morello there confirmed my sensations and that's been like a present. Thank you, Sir. But one must say that also finding Ringo is not a surprise, because while rocking and swinging, Ian Paice knows how to serve the song, the music, knows what to do and especially what not to do, when to do it and especially when not to do it. And when you have great hands and feet, the responsibility has to be even higher.

Drummers who affected me - No 1. Ian Paice. He may not be greatest (nobody is) - but for me, my first influence. Just so smooth.

Ahh...the intro to Space Truckin' ....the Carmine Appice inspired technique of hitting the splash cymbal and grabbing it is very effective. Everything comes from somewhere and I am sure lots of people have been inspired by some of the things you have done. I for one!!!!!!! It's gotta swing!!!! I wore glasses too and bought the one's that change color in the sunlight because you had them I believe. Gotta look good too. By the way ...the outdoor concert you did with Paul McCartney and David Gilmour was very enjoyable. What a band!!!

This was fantastic hearing of my fav drummer, Mr. Ian Paice giving his Drummers of Note. I always wondered what he thought of others. Like him I have my favs and I see mine are almost the same as his. This is great! I also found Krupa before Buddy and to this day Gene is still my favorite when it comes to his playing. It is really an honor for Ian Paice to have this channel so we can learn and grow! How many times through the years have I heard that Ringo is not that good and hearing this from musicians! Appeal to Authority is a fallacy but not in this case because Ian knows what he is talking about so I will tell these Ringo bashers that Ian says he is top-notch, so case closed! haha

Fantastic that Ian rates Ringo so highly. I always felt Ringo has been hammered mercilessly - but he's flawless.

With this said Ian Paice of Carmine Appice will inflate his ego even more, he is very conceited. Carmine once said that John Bonham learned things from him, and now hearing Ian I believe Carmine. wow. For me Ian will always be my hero drummer, the best.

Joe Morello's solo on Take Five is the type of drum solo where the vamp/comp keeps going, the rest of the band drops out and the drummer embellishes the vamp/comp. Morello's solo is very musical and expressive - He was truly melodic drummer...

Excellent reasoning behind the choices, thank you for that. On a musicians' forum it's astonishing how many drummers said they were inspired to start playing by Ringo (includes me!) - and of course, by the time In Rock came out drummers my age were in a position to truly appreciate a great rhythm section and then move on to 'discover' good / great drummers in other genres. I feel so lucky to have been able to really appreciate what was going on in the powerhouse of the bands I listened to and, naturally, Ian was a major influence...

Yep even though you come from an earlier era than me, I have to agree with that list. I always thought Morello was every bit as good as Buddy , he just didn't have the ego. Buddy was definitely a Juggernaut , Love the alien comment (too funny) . Ringo kinda stands by himself . Great list Ian and thanks for all your great drumming, and real inspiration we all got from you !!

Your not the first drummer who has had those choice words for Ringo. As far as ive heard Ringo has come out with something new and word is its brilliant

Now Ian Paice will be able to tell us who his most advanced students were, or who he thinks he influenced among the best known drummers, perhaps he is not aware of their influence. or any specialist on the subject to tell us.

Oh man, yeah Earl Palmer is amazing, Greg Errico, what he laid down made that band, to this day I use "I wanna take you higher" to practice double bass, you can play with it and try different patterns, and then Ringo, Ian I want to ask you and anyone else what you think of this, I believe some of what Ringo created was not done before and then copied so often, for example Hard Day's Night, that open hihat crashing beat I've never found anything like it before he recorded it and its like the basis for rock drumming, you've used it, Maggie May is it, and then She Loves You, basis of punk drumming and also copied a lot.

When I think of Sly I think of Andy Newmark on Fresh. Errico doesn't touch him. Just my opinion.
