He says he's not up on his jazz players but he made an impressive guess that the Nat Adderley'album was done by his brother Cannonball, seeing that Nat played on a lot of Cannonball's albums. Also impressive that he guessed Joe Zawinul on piano. Paice was more up on his jazz than he let on.

In a lifetime of loving a wide variety of music, Mountain’s “Nantucket Sleighride” remains a standout track for me. A beautiful composition that sometimes belies the heartbreaking truth of the whaling boat Essex’ crew’s terrible fate.

Ian Paice somehow always reminds me of the wild and frenzied drummer Animal from the Muppet Show! (Although some say it was Keith Moon! Ha ha 😂!) Ian clearly likes the heavier stuff as you may expect from Deep Purple's drummer. In my teens I really loved Deep Purple! Great video and your "Black Night" outro is very good! Cheers YP! Edwin 🚢🌇

That's a great review ! I owned a 68 pressing Book of Taliesyn in great condition and I should say I love D. P. MK1 more than Vanilla Fudge, which was in USA the equivalent of D. P. in "pre-prog baroque hard rock soul etc." but they were too much stucked in slow rythm patterns. Ian Paice really made the difference when he took his band in highs, recycling and extending the style of Mitch Ryder and the Detroit Wheels like in "Kentucky Woman" or "River Deep Mountain High". Just love it. Anyway Ian Paice is a little bit rough with Atomic Rooster because... Because I like them too ! 😁 Bonne continuation les amis ! 👍❤️

Ian is one of the all time great rock drumers and pushed the big machine of deep purple ! I saw them ten times here in LA years ago 'never missed a show it was like standing behind a 747 at takeoff verry powerfully ha ha thanks YP and you slipped in a little Atomic Rooster as well Cheers !

Saw and heard Mr Paice at my first-ever rock concert in ''68 (along with the rest of the Purps, of course). He pulled out an impressive solo, even doing some fancy stuff on the cymbal-stands at one point. (BTW, the other act playing that night was The Nice. Two keyboards legends on the same bill! Though tbh I began to find the volume levels a bit excessive.)

My favorite drummer, it figures he'd like the jazz, I always thought he had a better feel for that kind of drumming than the other big rock drummers. You can tell the Beatles broke up by how the British and American singles charts diverge here. America was about to go into AM radio one-hit-wonder pop land, that type of music getting started by Three Dog Night and CCR pretty much. You had to buy albums in order to hear any decent music, part of the reason LZ, DP, BS, Pink Floyd, and the others sold so many of them in the 70s.

Yeah, you're right! John Du Cann played guitar in Atomic Rooster and The Attack. Someone called him the father of Hardrock/Metal. You'd think that Paice must love that?

1970 is the last year in the UK where the 1960s guard were able to all score huge on the singles chart. Because in '71, T. Rex and the resulting glam rock phenomenon would pretty much shake pop music all across Europe and Oceania, though not in the US. But '70 is a great year for music, both albums and singles.

Except that Ritchie Blackmore had 3 or 4 top ten singles in the 80’s with Rainbow 🌈 So did Ian Gillan. Ditto David Coverdale with Whitesnake and Glen Hughes with the KLF .. No1. Roger Glover was No 1 in several countries in Europe with love is All in the late 70’s.

I thought Ian was a bit tough on The Band but maybe I’m biased? It’s always a treat to see the supremely talented Felix Pappalardi as well, he was gone far too soon. The Album Charts sum it up perfectly, 1970 was a very good year! Thanks again Yesterday’s Papers for another fascinating flashback to the music I grew up loving. Your outro is as always, cool and very well done.

my big takeaway was the liverpool scene. i had never heard of them but i like how raw and alive and totally silly they were. as much as i like deep purple...their live performances were 60% improvisational "jamming" (boring filler).

Also I’m noticing a pattern, most of these musicians are pointing out how Motown had basically sold out and instead of focusing on the art they are focusing on the money. If that is so, that breaks my heart. I was taught Motown was unique for us because it was basically one of the early black recording studios, but I guess after awhile all good studios must sell out to remain relevant. Sad really.

Great video. I’ve always admired Ian. Nice to hear the Liverpool Scene (Adrian Henri on vocals?). Imagine hearing Tomorrow Night for the first time. White Plains were a good pop act. The chart from that month sticks in the mind!

Paice is a genius drummer of course, but these are mostly long-forgotten bands (except the very first one which he doesn't like..). :) I notice that Sabbath's "Paranoid" was high on the singles chart - would have loved to hear him commenting on that one, or about Zep's third album which came around the same time too.

He did comment on both those bands recently. He likes Zeppelin, seeing them primarily as a blues band, but he finds The Sabs "too brutal", though he says that's not a criticism - his taste isn't aggressive enough to enjoy that.

I loved the early DP ("One More Rainy Day," "Hush," "Kentucky Woman," etc.), but I can see why they switched out their original vocalist and bassist for Ian "Jesus Christ" Gillan and Roger Glover respectively; they really took off after that. Paice definitely is a superb and somewhat underrated drummer.

@mackb909…..I liked the early Deep Purple songs (albeit, mostly covers) too. You’ll probably know that vocalist Rod Evans went on to front the incredible but virtually unknown group Captain Beyond? The things you learn watching this channel. I had no idea that the group White Plains recorded a version of Julie Do You Love Me? I guess Julie went from My Baby Loves Lovin’, to now the singer asking if Julie still loves him? Unstable girl, if I ever saw one! Anyway, that version by White Plains is no better than the Bobby Sherman one that we were stuck with here in the states.

white plains was a studio band at different times during the 70s, they had multiple charting songs at the same time under different monikers sherman became a cop and during interrogations would sing the song forcing perps to confess just to have him stop

@@thewkovacs316The singer for White Plains during that time period was Anthony Burrows. Within less than a year’s time he would be lending his voice to other bands which had major hits. Edison Lighthouse's "Love Grows (Where My Rosemary Goes)" White Plains' "My Baby Loves Lovin'” United We Stand by the Brotherhood of Man, he also singing lead a bit late for The Pipkins' “Gimme Dat Ding" and First Class' "Beach Baby". He was the British version of Ron Dante here in the United States who lent his voice to the Archies, and to the Cufflinks.

reading people blaming Paice because he don't recognaise or apreciate some songs...well , maybe they should remember that has been in the same time its released... pretty different from now , when we knows most of those musician and their works... simple , was other time , trust me what a 30's ranking !! moody blues , caravan , stones , purple , doors , free , sabbath , zeppelin , creedence , wow... a big trouble to decide who was the better from another , those days

6:30 Tamla Motown Chartbusters Vol. 3, or more correctly titled as Motown Chartbusters Vol. 3 was issued around late 1968 or early 1969 as the newest tracks on that compilation are from 1968. I have the album, and to my recollection, the EMI(Australia) issue had a silver border around the rear sleeve(I saw it somewhere) which is *not* on the rear sleeve of the British import issue which I have.

6:49 In America, Tamla and Motown are two separate labels. Tamla being yellow with a brown top where the Tamla brand sits, Motown is deep blue with a portion of the map of Michigan with Detroit marked with a star, and the Motown name in balloon-like lettering with rainbow colouring.

I've been listening to The Liverpool Scene a lot recently and have Adrian Henri's Collected Poems and have explored guitarist Andy Roberts Rock Family Tree. Liverpool Scene are in no way a singles band. You cannot begin to understand the magnitude of the experience from 3 minutes of an Adrian Henri poem set to music which is supposed to be experienced live at an art school 'Happening'. As for Andy Roberts guitaring, he was hot property on the folk rock scene in the early 70s. Check out Shelagh McDonald's first album.

He's keeping it real: The percussion breakdown in "Funk #49" is does not help the song and brings progress to a halt. Fortunately, the weird Joe Walsh lick pulls it back together. Still lame though. Tony Burrows deserves his own show. That dude was EVERYWHERE. Real musicians of his era knew about the Bacharach/Warwick deal. Quite a deal at that. Dude! That's fantastic old footage of Joe Zawinul.

@@YesterdaysPapers Two of the members , Adrian Henri and Mike Hart , were from The Wirral. John Peel was from the same neck of the woods. Adrian was a renowned poet and painter. Mike Hart is a fascinating character and l think John Peel tried to help him achieve greater commercial success. I’ve talked to people who said he was a real talent( some of his solo tracks are on KZfaq) , but a big breakthrough for him never happened. . In the early 1960s he was the leader of Wirral R and B band The Roadrunners, who even The Beatles were quite taken by. In some ways Mike Hart was a Lennonesque type character.. They were often on the same bill as The Beatles at The Cavern and other Merseyside venues. There are also some clips of them on KZfaq, they were good! I saw them play on the same bill as the great Little Richard in a Birkenhead cinema. If you get a chance check out Mike Hart on KZfaq. Saying all this, that Liverpool Scene single does sound dreadful, but they probably released it for a laugh! They were a bit like The Bonzos and were on The lsle Of Wight 1969 festival when Dylan was on.

Interesting that he remarked on the Motown 'production line' getting samey - two Motown tracks in the charts were re-releases from the mid 60s, they flogged those songs to death - but at the same time notice a third Tamla release 'Ball of Confusion' showed a change in direction. Norman Whitfield and Frank Wilson had more control in production, and the new post-Ross Supremes were about to release 'Nathan Jones' as well.. Ian should have waited a month or two! Also in the album chart, Deep Purple, Zepellin and Sabbath in the top 5 while Let It Be creeping out of the top 10.. a new era had arrived.

darganx great points about 1970 Tamla Motown which was predictable and boring but with Whitfield and Wilson and great artists like Marvin Gaye and Stevie Wonder the bland corporate sound would change with innovative sounds and more songs that addressed the issues of the day so Paice is spot on about the pre Kent State-Jackson State Motown which was dull non controversial and looked to sale the most records.

Carl Palmer had already left Atomic Rooster at that point. He only played on their first album and then was replaced by Rick Parnell.

Shame to hear him consider The Liverpool Scene track as ‘dummy music’, since it clearly stands out (along with Nat Adderley) amongst the pack of trite sludgy rock that was evidently in vogue at the time.

I’ve noticed that the reviewer tends to be more opinionated and arrogant depending on where they are in their careers at that particular moment. Not always, but sometimes.

time to kill was the a side and not the shape im in?????? a little bit rough on a classic from the james gang he clearly didnt get what the liverpool scene was doing...that's funny and can someone please explain why the uk charts is a wonderful mix of great tunes and the american chart is mostly crap that i listened to? i was 9...a 9 year old's taste should not be reflected in the charts

I thought that was strange about the Band single too, but it seems that "Time to Kill" was indeed the A-side. "The Shape I'm In" was the song I used to hear on (FM) radio, though.

FM and AM have diverged. AM has too much housewife music at this point. Have to push another button every other song while listening in your car.

I can agree with him on reagge, something doesn't sit to well with me either.I like som reggea, not love . Love some Motown though, Supremes, Marvin Gaye etc! Marvin Gaye Whats goin on is magic.The song flows and blend with each other fantasticaly! Don't know if its considered motown though

@@Psychedlia98 You, really need to do that! Judging by your name you like psychadelic music and I think that album has a psychadelic quality to it, mixed with soul. Very progressive soul music :)
