The complete no.9, was world class in more areas of being a centre forward than I can say of anyone else- and because he had so many tools in his toolbox and could decide what to do so quickly, it had an exponential effect of making him completely unplayable, because in any given situation when the ball gets played in he had 3-4 ways he could finish. He could spin, drop a shoulder for a yard, head, far corner, near corner, with power, with finesse.. In terms of a pure finisher there has arguably been noone better ever. Usually with players (some of them better overall players than Rushie) they have their signature finishes- Messi has them, Fowler had them, Shearer, Ronaldo... Rushie could do it all.

Look at the amount of goals he scored in finals, semi finals & crunch games that could have decided the league. Ian Rush was an absolute NIGHTMARE.

His runs were predictable, hence a Beardsley, Hughes, Barnes or Dalglish could always find him, its his timing that wasn't predictable, which is why defenders lost him. ⚽

I'd argue Ian Rush had the greatest on pitch impact of any LFC legend of all time. Kenny is recognised as the greatest, but in all fairness he didn't come in as a youngster like Rush did and half of Kenny's legacy is due to what he did off the pitch. Rush was the best finisher in Europe for a decade, and if it wasn't for the Heysel disaster and the European ban his legend would be even greater I'm sure. AC Milan had it easy with their legendary side at that time because they didn't have to face the great LFC late 80s team.

Great as Van Basten was, Rush was quite a considerably better as a marksman. He scored 346 goals at Liverpool alone, (not counting goals for other teams he played for), reaching almost 400 career goals. Van Basten reached something like 300, which was a superb achievement in itself. Hats off to both men! Few strikers anywhere or in any era can compete with Rush's goal tally, he was that good.

You were offside if you were level in Rush's era, Today you can even be off side so long as you arent directly interfering with play, that alone doubles Rush's Goals per game ratio. You could tackle from behind n basically butcher a player in Rush's era, today you can't even tackle head on any more, that alone doubles Rush's goals per game ratio. You could back pass to the keeper in Rush's era n the keeper could pick it up, they can't do that today, that alone adds 20% to rushes goals per game ratio. Rush's era favoured defensive football & defenders, that all changed in the 90s & Rush bridged those two eras n proved he woulda been a scoring machine in this era too. Haaland is a big soft pampered kitten compared to the razor sharp, streetwise Rush.

I kind of wonder how great these strikers would be today. Feel like England didn't really have good defenders or goalkeepers until the 00's. I'd include my own Shearer in that. I mean thugs like Vinnie Jones were playing in the top flight. I think there's exceptions more in older playmakers. Maradona, Gascogine, who I think could maybe be successful in the modern game. I just wonder how many goals someone like Kane would have scored if he played in the 80s. I think Shearer and Rush's goal tallys would be significantly less, if they were playing against competent defenders like in Italy
