Dr. Peyton, a former atheist, neurologist and hospice physician, shares her NDE and Dr. Marjorie Woollacott, a neuroscience professor, discusses the transformations caused by near-death experiences and mystical experiences, along with their relationship to consciousness, love, and joy.
Studies show that 1) meditation training significantly enhances compassionate responses to persons in pain by more than five times compared to nonmeditators; this alters the activation of the neural circuitry of emotion; 2) NDE experiences result in transformations bringing about significant increases in kindness to others and spiritual well-being, suggesting they are also a vehicle for spiritual awakening; 3) psilocybin experiences also produce increased love as well as self-compassion. One person said at the follow-up, “There is more empathy - a greater understanding of people…” Another said, ‘There is “more desire to connect with loving energy and have loving energy flow through me to others. About Marjorie Woollacott
Marjorie Woollacott, Ph.D., is an Emeritus Professor of Human Physiology, and a member of the Institute of Neuroscience, at the University of Oregon. She was chair of the Human Physiology Department for seven years. In addition to teaching courses on neuroscience and rehabilitation, she taught courses on complementary and alternative medicine and meditation. She is the President and co-founder of the Academy for the Advancement of Postmaterialist Sciences and she is also Research Director for the International Association of Near Death Studies (IANDS). Marjorie has published more than 200 scientific articles and written or co-edited eight books. Her book, Infinite Awareness pairs Woollacott’s research as a neuroscientist with her self-revelations about the mind’s spiritual power. Between the scientific and spiritual worlds, she breaks open the definition of human consciousness to investigate the existence of a non-physical and infinitely powerful mind.

That did it for me. "Fighting it, won't work, it would be painful." I came to this deduction a while ago. If someone comes across me in a medical situation where as death may occur. I'M NOT FIGHTING IT! So, if you should fret over not being able to save me, No worries, I'm ok, I really am, I'M OK...!

Beyond the scientific exclamations and data...these surreal and indescribable experiences tied to timeless joy and heigthened awareness describes a transition that has also taken place in my life through years spent kayaking along with wild dolphin. Joy is is constant . The "here and now"...is now and then ..and "nevermore" is Evermore! My life has been touched profoundly through the spirit of these animals. Not an NDE...but certainly a "force to be reckoned with" and that I could relate to after listening to the presenters beautiful account of her transformational experience!

Thank you so much for the hope of the psilocybin. I'm forever telling people who've had NDEs that I want one, or at least, a STE (spiritually transformative experience) due to the depression and anxiety I've had most of my life. When I found out about Ayahuasca, I wished I'd had access to this. I did find a psilocybin retreat I'm saving up to attend, but in the meantime doing a lot of self-love talk to get me through. Meditation has been very difficult for me to do since I became a mother in 1995, and I've not been able to find a way to meditate that feels like I'm benefiting at all. It doesn't mean I've given up on it; I just can't find the right mantra that speaks to me. My mind wanders too much, if I just try to walk or listen to Ohm or other beautiful music. If any of you are reading this, I could use your prayers that this helps me significantly to enjoy my life here and feel actually needed to be here and that my presence here is important. I need to KNOW this. Thank you for listening. I do not need a response. 💜

I loved both accounts. I began to freeze when it changed to mentation concerning physiological concomitants. The experience is living and primary. It has clearly been shown not to depend on the brain. The tellers of the experience are the primary source. There is no mental box that the experience has to be fitted into, saying "that is this."

I guess the first lady explained it later. she is a believer by nature. First she was a believer and a materialist narrative and now she's been a converted believer in the non-material narrative. She's not condescending to her audience she's condescending to her own ego. The second lady will make mention of our filters, and what she does not mention about our filters is how they not only keep us from original experiences but after experience they create a tendency to color things in with condescending whispering voices that fit the new expanded perspective of the egos belief system. In short they are not skeptical by nature but believers by nature. It is like a yin yang symbol there is skepticism within belief just as there is belief within skepticism. An open-minded skeptic is like the aiming eye of an Archer. Belief is like the strong back that can draw the bow. The releasing of the arrow is like the experience itself. The whispery talk is manipulative they're not trusting you with the information. They are not letting go of their own truth to expose the experience for itself. They want you to believe as they do.

I've seen/heard a few negative experiences by people. They apparently do happen but there's much fewer public accounts. I can understand why someone wouldn't want to share them. It could be , I really don't know, there actually are fewer of them. Or people don't want to admit it. It would make sense that they would seek help from therapy or clergy. I sure would. Relating to the study of cardiac arrest survivors, of the small percentage that survive (variable between 10-20%) only about ten to 20 % of those actually report an NDE. According to the experts, cardiac arrest causes major trauma to the brain such as swelling, which occurs after blood flow is restarted. Also these patients are given lots of drugs which cause amnesia apparently (memory loss). The fact that patients report anything at all from this period is remarkable but it's likely that a higher percentage also have the experience (NDE) but simply can't remember it.

Because a hallucinogenic drug produces similar effects as those in a NDE should not be surprising. The question is the extent of the experience. This is not to deride the important impact of the drug for those that need it. It seems by your presentation you get about half way there to the real spiritual experience NDEers express. That to me is the real value of the natural NDE experience, even as traumatic as they can be, verses the hallucinations produced by a drug!!

Hi Syko Path, I'm not sure how you define new age. However, near-death experiences have occurred throughout history and cross-cultures. Here are just a couple of examples. 1) In Plato's book "Republic" the last chapter is the Myth of Er, which is the retelling of a near-death experience. 2) In the 16th century, Emanuel Swedenborg (a Swedish pluralistic-Christian theologian, scientist, philosopher, and mystic) had profound experiences that confirm what near-death experiencers are reporting.
