Order “Hit Me! The Best Of” by Ian Dury here: iandury.lnk.to...
Official animated lyrics video for “Reasons To be Cheerful, Pt. 3” by Ian Dury & The Blockheads
Originally released as a single in July 1979 following the release of Ian Dury & The Blockheads first album Do It Yourself. The track reached number 3 in the UK chart and would go on to become one of Ian Dury & The Blockheads best known and loved recordings.
This video, created and directed by Zeroh Studio in collaboration with the Ian Dury Estate, is a celebration of the hit song and the spirit of the lyrics - an anthemic ode to joy!
The characters, shapes, textures and patterns you see in this video are all sourced from original drawings, illustrations and paintings, created by Ian between 1963 and 1970 during and after his time at the Royal College of Art and before he formed his first band, Kilburn and the High Roads in 1971.
The typeface used in the video to illustrate the words of the lyric was created by Zeroh by reworking lettering from one of Ian’s coloured pencil drawings. Other lettering is sourced from the Letraset sheets and stencil sets that Ian used in his illustrations.
The portrait photos of Ian were taken by Ian’s friend and rock photographer, Chris Gabrin who photographed Ian and his son Baxter for the iconic front cover of New Boots and Panties!! in 1977.

LYRICS:
(Why don’t you get back into bed, why don’t you get back into bed
Why don’t you get back into bed, why don’t you get back into bed ...)
Reasons to be cheerful, part three
Some of Buddy Holly, the working folly, good golly Miss Molly and boats Hammersmith Palais, the Bolshoi Ballet, jump back in the alley, add nanny goats Eighteen- wheeler Scammels, Dominecker Camels, all other mammals plus equal votes
Seeing Piccadilly, Fanny Smith and Willy, being rather silly and porridge oats
A bit of grin and bear it, a bit of come and share it, you're welcome we can spare it, yellow socks
Too short to be haughty, too nutty to be naughty, going on forty, no electric shocks
The juice of the carrot, the smile of a parrot, a little drop of claret, anything that rocks
Elvis and Scotty, the days when I ain't spotty, sitting on the potty, curing smallpox
Reasons to be cheerful, part three
Reasons to be cheerful, part three
Reasons to be cheerful, part three
Reasons to be cheerful, one, two, three
Reasons to be cheerful, part three, verse two
Health service glasses, gigolos and brasses, round or skinny bottoms
Taking Mum to Paris, lighting up the chalice, Wee Willy Harris Bantu
Stephen Biko, listening to Rico; Harpo, Groucho, Chico Cheddar cheese and pickle, the Vincent motorsickle, slap and tickle Woody Allen, Dali, Dmitri and Pasquale, Balabalabala and Volare
Something nice to study, phoning up a buddy, being in my nuddy
Saying okey dokey, sing-a-long-a Smokey, coming out of chokey
John Coltrane's soprano, Adi Celentano, Bonar Colleano
Reasons to be cheerful, part three
Reasons to be cheerful, part three
Reasons to be cheerful, part three
Reasons to be cheerful, one, two, three
(But what about, but what about, but what about, but what about ... ?)
Yes, yes, dear, dear, perhaps next year or maybe even never in which case
Reasons to be cheerful, part three
Reasons to be cheerful, part three
Reasons to be cheerful, part three
Reasons to be cheerful, one, two, three
Reasons to be cheerful, part three
Reasons to be cheerful, part three
Reasons to be cheerful, part three
Reasons to be cheerful, one, two, three

If I could go back in time to have a night out with one British musician/all-round legend, it'd be Ian Dury. What a blast! An underrated talent and we have a duty to keep his legacy alive.

From Wikipedia - Saxophonist Davey Payne was upset about the financial disparities within Dury's band, so in order to placate him, Dury told co-writer Chaz Jankel to incorporate a sax solo part in the middle, which Payne could improvise and thus earn a share in the song Unreal

What a fantastic video! It has the feel of the 70s but the quality of today's graphics. And the song. It has to be one of the finest pop songs ever. Great lyrics to sing along to - at least if you get them right. I always heard that as 'peeing in my nuddy', which I think it the more amusing line. Great counterpoint singing between Ian and the band. And brilliant musicianship. We truly were spoilt growing up in the late 70s. At least for music, everything about Britain was falling apart! And I see the ever reliable KZfaq algorithm is recommending Squeeze Cool for Cats so I'm off there now :)
