This is the second video dedicated to musical culture in Japan in the ancient and medieval centuries (the first is here: • Gagaku 雅楽 - Medieval J... ).
In this - unfortunately - brief selection by the musicologist Akira Tamba, we will be able to listen to a chronological musical selection that goes from the 6th century to the 16th century.
The first two chants are called "Shômyô": a style of Japanese Buddhist chant used especially in the Tendai and Shingon sects; then it is the turn of the wonderful "Gagaku" music, 雅楽, lit.: "elegant music", played in the courts of Japan in the Heian period (794-1185); finally the most recent musical selections dating back to the 15th and 16th centuries.
Concerning the video: I've use a part of the wonderful "Ippen Shōnin Eden" (一遍上人絵伝,) an illustrated biography of the itinerant monk Ippen. This is a group of "emakimono" or "emaki", painted narrative handscrolls, from the Kamakura period of Japanese history (1185-1333) that describe the life of Ippen (1234-1289), a Buddhist monk who founded the Ji-shū (時宗, "Time sect") branch of Pure Land Buddhism.

Thank you for uploading this album. Once I relaxed and let the sound flow over me, it carried me along. Parts of it reminded me of the sound tracks of Kurosawa's films that were set in historical times. And I loved the video artwork.

I have recently read the book by Akira Tamba this album came with : "Musiques traditionnelles du Japon : des origines au XVIe siècle". It was an extremely interesting reading. I strongly recommand it for anyone who is interested by this subject and can understand French. It is the most complete thing I have read on this subject. There is also a second book by the same author that deals with Japanese music from the 15th century until nowadays : "La musique classique du Japon : du XVe siècle à nos jours", which is equally interesting.

う〜ん、大体格好から見るに、恐らく室町時代あたり（1400年代程）だと思います。私も歴史の専門家ではないので、詳しいことはわかりませんが、確実に江戸ではありません。これは確実に、鎌倉以降の戦国時代のものです！参考になれば幸いです。

I prefer European mediæval music🎧🎶, composed and created by Catholics, but Japanese traditional music is interesting🤝🤝🤝🤝🫶🏻

I prefer Eastern medieval music, composed and played by non-Christian People. And I received an education very much more catholic than yours. But sometimes western music is interesting, too.

I went to schools that claimed to be Catholic schools, though they were allied & aligned with the Vatican II Counterchurch, not the Catholic Church ⛪. I highly doubt you've ever been a Catholic. I am a Catholic and I almost certainly know much more about Catholicism and Christianity than you. Why don't you consider debating my friends and I on the true faith?
