I've had one these since '07, and I've really been impressed w/ the quality. I read a lot of stuff by guys swapping the pickups for Gibsons or SDs, but to my ear the stock ones are fine. I did your linseed oil treatment of fretboard, and polished frets with that same stuff you use, in the metal can, and its a really great guitar. I went up in strings to 11's, and not the intonation is a little off, but I'll fix it. Nice video.. these Ibanez AS 73's are highly under rated, but for sure better than most low cost 335 copies.

I found I had to install a metal plate around the input jack on all my semihollows. just one mistep onto your cable on stage or at the house and thats that. I prefer the input on the top like Gibson but the plates seem to do the trick. great video

Ibanez Artcore set up manual says string action at 14th fret 2.3mm bass side and 1.7mm at treble side. Mine is set neck relief of 0.30mm and the action 2.5mm bass and 2.0 treble but I still getting some fret buzz. :/

You can always buy another one! There is a slightly smaller bodied version, the AM73 (as opposed to the larger AS series, like the AS73 in this version). From what I have heard, the sound is SLIGHTLY different, but not enough to fret over... er... I mean worry about.

Completely random question... but Idecided to get a Boss AC3 pedal since it has a buffer but decided hey, why not go for an acoustic one and kill two birds with one stone since I'll use it a lot anyway? See it has your guitar line in of course, but then on the other side it has for when the effect is switched on, it goes to a PA system or recorder or whatever, and when the effect is off it goes to your processor then your amp, so it's basically acoustic, straight to your own favorite distortion in the push of a button. The thing is though, I was thinking of maybe having the processor and the Acoustic pedal on the same chain so I wouldn't have to switch the pedal off then go to switch the processor on to go to distortion. How do I solve this dellima? I do have a CD line in for the amp, so maybe have the line from my processor going to the input to the amp then the Acoustic pedal going to the CD input? Or do you recommend just getting a cord splitter so they are both going to the amp input? I'm terribly sorry for rambling, but I do hope to hear from you :) Show less

I was hoping you would show the straight on view of the strings. I bought one of these a while back and finally started playing again after tennis elbow/playing other guitars. I now notice that the strings, as they go over the bridge are not straight. From the tailpiece to the bridge, there is a very slight bend (looking straight at the face of the body). Is this normal?

Just as for the sake of discussion... concerning useing linseed oil (aka flaxseed oil) on a fret board...Although I've seen KZfaq vids that almost violently discourage using it...I believe it would do no harm, possibly some good, and certainly make the fretboard look shiny and beautiful. Linseed oil is an antioxidant and drying oil...the same thing used in oil paints as a binder, also used for rubbed on finishes and is the same thing used in the flaxseed oil pills from the health store ... because it is a drying oil, when you put it on a fret board, a thin coat will dry in a few hours,... it's like adding a finish...which could actually protect it from the elements, make it feel a little slicker and certainly easier to clean later. I'm not a guitar tech at all..but I do know a little about oil paints, linseed oil and finishes. I would guess lindseed oil is at least 100 percent better than lemon oil, a non drying oil, that contains Limonene a aggressive solvent which might dissolve glues and make the fretboard swell, pushing the frets out or even, in excessive amounts, might lead to delamination of the fretboard itself.... Hehe..sorry for the long post, ..I should lighten up on the beer...

I bet that the butcher block oil I use to seal and protect my good cutting board would work. It's a mix of BLO and waxes. It seals and protects cutting boards well so it just might do the trick. I'll try it next time.

Hey Dave, I imagine your pretty tired of doing setup movies by now... Just wondered if your using your Stew-Sack under string thingies to check the bridge radius on each one now? And the nut and/or action on the 1st? After the first couple hundred I could 'see' the relief pretty well, but I almost always check the bridge and nut. A lot of the cheaper MIC and MIK units I have to run a file through some of the nut slots, or pop it off and take a little off the bottom. BTW, I told the wife I had to buy another tool box to stick your sticker on. Of course she didn't go for that, but I've got lots more room now! Thanks man!

Winner Winner she's got a lot of sustain, I have an AF75 and it has sustain for days, I have 2 minor problems with mine, the jack will not stay tight, and the bridge tends to slide up towards the pickup, I had my tech mark it's location for me after I had the setup redone the 3rd time
@PeterDad60
@PeterDad60 8 жыл бұрын
+william “flying2bill” russell In the future, take the jack out and then securely tighten the nut and lock nut, then reinstall the jack. Avoid twisting the internal wiring at all costs so do it as I said and take it out. Never tighten the jack while it's installed because you run the risk of twisting the wiring! For a moving bridge Apply violin bow rosin on the underside of the bridge, you can even apply some on the top plate where the bridge sits. The bridge needs to be set so that the intonation is correct. I hope you can do that much yourself. A rough placement is between the notches cut into the F holes. That's what the notches are there for. Not for beauty. Moving the bridge so as to make the strings longer lowers the intonation. Moving the bridge closer to the nut raises the intonation or pitch. Think- Violin has short strings and is high pitched. Bass has long strings and is lower in pitch. Easy Peasey as Dave would chuckle to himself. Ooops, he needs to make some money off of all you people who never gave all this stuff much thought. Sorry Dave, you can delete my post no problemo. I will not get into setting up your neck, not that it's hard but how about if you and others learn this stuff all on your own?

might want to look into one of those jack tightener tools that allow you to tighten the jack without having to hold the back of it or opening up the guitar. i know Screw-Mac has one, and Allparts does as well (i think AP's is called "Jack The Gripper" or something similarly stupid and pun-y. dumb name but clever product.) they're pretty awesome though and not terribly expensive.

Great video. I've had one of these since 2007, and linseed oiled the fretboard, a technique I learned from your videos, btw. This is a well made guitar, and even though I've read a lot of blogs by guys that just have to change the pickups for fancier, more exotic brands, I find the standard stock ones to be just fine. It depends more on the amp you use and how you have it set. I wouldn't sell or trade mine at all since it was only $300 from MF, plus extra for an Ibanez case. Great guitar and interesting video.

+Jonathan Hands I think a lot of people buy Epiphones because they look close to the Gibson equivalents but for the same or just a little more money the Artcores just seem significantly more compelling in terms of neck, feel, quality of the standard pickups, etc.

+hammondsphoto Yeah I agree w/ you. I like the shape better too actually, than the Epis or Gibsons. I have a 1990 AM50 Ibanez, its got a smaller body, but it plays like a full size, great neck, pickups, etc. Its an Artstar, anyhow, I got sidetracked. I really like the Artcores, they are very well made, and nice to play. And I see Dave likes them too.

I got an AS 93 fm lefty recently. The bit about pickup height would have been interesting to me. From factory the bridge pickup is maybe 2mm from the string and the neck one double that gap. Is there a logic to the different heights?
@charlesbranch4120
@charlesbranch4120 3 жыл бұрын
Thinking about that, it's easier to push a lighter gauge string down to account for top to bottom action height, and there's a difference in pickup resistance between neck and bridge to balance.

@charlesbranch4120
@charlesbranch4120 3 жыл бұрын
No, the Ibanez manual (pdf) merely specifies .010-.046, 10 gauge strings. Try whatever brands are available at your location. Andy Powers, designer at Taylor Guitars, says that "guitar strings are like the tires on a car, it depends on what you want to use the car/instrument for." Are you playing in rock, smooth cruising, or something else? I use four-season tires for snow and ice, and when someone complains that their "all-season" tires don't work that well in snow and Ice, I say "Well, those are all-season tires for Florida or California, not for our northern latitudes." I'll probably go with Elixir strings, or Dunlop Reverend Willie's or flat-wounds, and in the stock dimensions after my Ibanez AS73FM-TAF arrives later this week, with the first string change. Experiment and have fun!

You should try a guitar before you buy it. Rather than just buy it without thinking and then complain you should really shop, pick the best you can find in your price range. If you can afford a great Gibson and you pick the best one you can find you will have a better guitar than most of those imports. I have an Artcore, it is comfortable and plays easily but it will not sound as good as a great Gibson but it will cost a lot less. After shopping Semihollow body guitars for quite a while, I have determined that if you are buying a guitar for under $600, choose an Artcore. If you have $1200- $3000 buy a well selected Gibson. If you are spending about a $1000 the Ibinez guitars are pretty good. You can find so many people talking about getting an Artcore and changing the pups but not a lot a people saying it worked well and offering the perfect set of pups and pots (should usually be changed as a set to make sure the work well together). By the time you buy the artcore, buy the pups and pots, do a difficult conversion, you will be spending a pretty penny and MAYBE it will work well for you, but you better be smart and careful if you want a decent chance of success. Money or great Guitar....Which do you what. There are no free lunches in guitarland.

The crowd of commenters who are over the top nuts about oil on fretboards must not be very familiar with woodworking. The notion that actual oils (linseed, mineral oil, etc) might crack fretboards is sheer stupidity. The idea that they're going to go somewhere deep and harmful in a short period of time - same. I have planed a lot of rosewood that's been sitting around with wax or oil, and some that was commercially "infused" with resin. It never goes very deep, even the vacuum infused wood. The only exception is some woods where you have access to the end grain, it can travel through end grain much better than side grain, but it would only be an improvement to wood stability. If someone leaves a guitar in an uncontrolled area (like a barn, attic or garage for years) and it goes through temp and humidity cycles unchecked, it's cracking no matter what. Aside from that, having a finished neck and an unfinished fretboard with no oil is sort of a dopey thing. It just guarantees that the fretboard breathes faster than the wood it's attached to.

This guitar is, like the most guitars, technically spoken low-tech and primitive. It has no "electronics", because it has no transistors or diodes. So it's only "electrics". And I want to tell everybody that a non-symmetrical working, humming guitar which tones changes with cable is crap because we have since decades the possibility to build really professional guitars. Oh I have such guitar, apart from the elctric-crap and the intonation in the first frets (I had to make a compensated saddle for the instrument becaus it was so bad), it is a good guitar.
