This is the story of Ibrahim Babangida, the Nigerian Military ruler who came to power in 1985 after deposing the regime of General Muhammed Buhari in a coup d'etat. When he assumed office, Babangida outlined a number of actions and policies to eliminate corruption, solve Nigeria’s serious economic problems, and hand over power to a democratically elected government by the end of 1992.
Yet as part of his legacy, some people think of him as a deceitful politician who did not meet the standards he set for himself, in the time he was in power, between 1985 and 1993. During this period, human rights abuses, including ethnically based attacks, corruption became widespread and at one point the economy was in the doldrums. The press was also silenced just like during the Buhari regime.
Babangida’s style of leadership earned him nicknames like ‘Maradona’, ‘Machiavelli’, ‘Master of the Game’, and ‘Evil Genius. In this episode of African Biographics, we cover the rise to power, and legacy of General Ibrahim Babangida, Nigeria’s former Military Ruler.

It's too simplistic to blame the problem of Nigeria on only on corruption. As a friend do say, corruption is not the route cost of any problem but a reaction to the problem. When you look too deep to see that the following; 1) population explosion 2)a lack of productivity amongst the general populace 3) religious extremism 4) deep rooted cultural problems Are bigger problem than corruptions than most of you cry about.

Clumsy Africans fighting over religions that are foreign to them. How refreshing. Also, I think Babangida wanted to clinged on to power because liked the way princes Diana gazed at him when they met. It was an hypnotic experience for him to have a white lady with such status stare at him in such a flattering way. Most Africans petite bourgeoisie on the continent live to share similar experience.

In terms of Prudent use of resources and following due process I believe the short time Yar Adua spent as president should have been the best. Unfortunately, in addition to not staying long in office due to ill health leading to his death, his regime had the misfortune of being badly affected by the world financial meltdown of 2008. But Obasanjo who stayed 8 years cleared the debts, increased foreign investments, reduced unemployment and opened up the economy more innovately than his predecessors. Obasanjo bringing out Yar Adua was the best thing he did for Nigeria. Yar Adua continued the good economic policies of Obasanjo while in office. I therefore adjudge him as the best given the facts.

He was not the most brutal or evil man to rule Nigeria, but he was a snake who bit you and wanted to be loved at the same time.
