I wish there were more radios like this one. I don't understand why more manufacturers don't design their base stations with more bands and modes in mind. It doesn't even bother me that this radio doesnt have a sleek looking waterfall on the front, the fact that this is so versatile is really what I'm looking for. The only thing I would change would be to increase transmit power to 200 watts.

Great review of the ic 9100

And now, 10 years later, it's almost impossible for us to find a rig like this anymore in Europe. We can only find it in Japan and God only knows if it can be delivered in good shape here. I wish I could find this rig used in good shape! 73 de SV1SLB Michael.

very good review of the 9100. i also noticed that the 7100 sounded better on DV then the 9100, but also taking into consideration that the 9100 may have a better speaker system being a base model.outside of that this is a great radio.. thanks for sharing George..my wish list for sure.. 73 AA1US..

Release an updated version of this 9100 based on the color touchscreen from the 7300 and you have a winner. Form factor, features and then ergonomics... that would be perfect, I guess!

There needs to be more of these. I own a 7300 but i prefer abase over these new 2 meter handhelds and mobiles. Id purchase a 9700 but theres none availible. The 9700 still is not as wide coverage as this 9100.

What about transverter mode? I want to add 222 Mhz!

Hi there George, Very interesting review thankyou. Ho boy I feel sorry for hams who are coulor blind. They must wander what's in this with Monochrome -v- Coulor screens. I never use to wonder what a coulor dial would have been like for the old FTDX 400. Would probably looked stupid!!!. Never mind hey. saying that we did have blue and red on some of the older military rigs??. I think I'm getting too old thinking back to the 60's Hi Hi. I do like the gold finish on that new Icom that you reveiwed earlier. Was it the IC 7850 ?. It would not look out of place in Buckingham palace sat on a highly polished table. What you don’t say ... Being a IC-7400 owner , this seemed like merely an advancement of that set .... Only this is 4 inches deeper behind the screen and feels like twice the weight . It’s a real log of a set , where as the IC-7400 was almost portable . This is far from portable so unless it’s on a ship or something, the GPS stuff is pointless . Who wants to tie up a £2500 rf dxing set doing DSTAR . A blue dongle on the PC is enough for that mode that has floundered and gone reflector mad from its gateway conceived beginnings. What we really need to know about this set is what is the IF frequency and can we tap that off easily and display that on a waterfall , to get a panoramic display for all the supported bands on the set ? It was a poor seller and discontinued with no successor. Great rig but was a dinosaur by design at birth ...
