This has potential..
Today we are taking our first dive into Aussie Rules Football. I had heard of the sport over the years but have had basically no knowledge of the rules, nor have I ever seen it played. Lots of questions after watching this video but overall am very excited to continue learning about the sport. Let me know which direction I should be heading in next in our journey into the world of aussie rules.

Buzkashi began among the nomadic Asian tribes who came from farther north and east spreading westward from China and Mongolia between the 10th and 15th centuries in a centuries-long series of migrations. Buzkashi, translated as “goat pulling”, is a traditional Central Asian game that is played on horseback or yak back. In this game, players vie for control of a headless goat carcass, which acts as the “ball”, in an effort to score points for themselves or their team.

Aussie Tom Wills and others invented the game in the 1800s. His family owned a farm/station in western Victoria and his ancestor watched the local aboriginal/indigenous people play a game with a stuffed animal skin which may have given him the idea for the game. Two other videos are less confusing than this one. They are, 'What Is AFL?' ( the official video) and 'A Beginners Guide to AFL'. Both have the audio of the game which adds to the excitement of it, that this one does not.

@@petermcculloch4933 That doesn't mean the purpose of football is to keep cricketers fit. After the first game the Melbourne Cricket Club banned football being played there for 3 years. Even though 3 of the 4 who wrote up the first rules were cricketers, those first rules stipulated a rectangular pitch. Football was invented in order to play football.

@@dianeoriander8276 Perhaps take your own advice. Read Wills' letter to Bell's Life and you'll see how the oft-repeated myth doesn't match what he actually wrote. Welcome to the best game you've never heard of, mate. 👍You should check out the official explanation vids on the AFL's channel. They are much more pithy and carry some of the energy of the game, and perhaps explain the rules a tad better. There's an older one for an American audience and a newer updated one. The game is much more popular than Rugby. The national league (AFL) has the fourth highest average attendance of any domestic sports league in the world, as noted in the vid (and first highest per capita). Pretty impressive considering that it's only beaten by the Americans' NFL (USA population 330m), the Bundesliga (German population 84m) and the English Premier League (British population 67 million). Australia's population is only 26m, and the code is predominantly followed in Victoria, South Australia, Tasmania and Western Australia. Rugby is the main code in Queensland and New South Wales. The average rugby crowd is about half that of AFL crowds. You'll get suggestions about big hits and spectacular marks (catches) videos, which are awesome, but the AFL puts out short highlight summary videos of every single game. These would give you an idea of the connected game play without watching out of context player highlights etc. I would recommend the Richmond v Adelaide 2017 grand final vid, which really captures the big game atmosphere (the game was eventually a blowout, but the vibe from the crowd and the game jumps out of the screen) and the Collingwood v West Coast 2018 grand final vid, which was also a big game but ended up being a very close contest. Cheers!

When AFL started out there was no finals series, and no behind points. But it got to a stage where there were draws that nobody could choose between such as the 1896 that my ancestor played in, as the two top teams at the end of the season were equal in every respect. They brought in the behind points to also prevent draws as prevalent as in soccer. The indigenous game was called Margarook but there are different theories as to how much of the indigenous elements came into the game that was codified in 1858. AFL games are broadcast on the Fox network we are currently in week 6 of the current season.

Glad you enjoyed your first taste of Aussie rules football. The game is commonly called AFL but that is like calling hockey NHL. The minor premiership means nothing. The Grand Final is the prize. The game was not invented by the Aboriginal people but it is possible that they influenced it. The game was invented in 1858 (so long before many other codes) as a way of keeping cricketers fit in the summer (that is why it is played on cricket grounds). One of the founders of the game was Tom Wills, who was exposed to early forms of rugby, since he went to Rugby School. He also lived in rural Victoria and played with Aboriginal kids. It is possible (though this is disputed) that he witnessed an Aboriginal ball game called marn grook, which does have some features common with Aussie rules football. No, rugby, rugby league and soccer are not played on the ground where Aussie rules and football are played, except for special events, like rugby tests and international soccer games (and rarely then). Those sports have their own rectangular pitches at other stadiums. Here are the highlights of the 2023 Grand Final between Collingwood (a suburb of Melbourne) and Brisbane: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/jtqIp5qTttqYe6s.html

Depends on where you live in Australia if you watch or play AFL as each state is different. NRL is on the rise in terms of tv viewership, but AFL has so many live viewers. It is especially popular in Victoria, South Australia & Western Australia. NRL is more popular in NSW & QLD, hence state of origin. I live in NSW, and you can still play Rugby Union & AFL, but you have to travel more. Whereas NRL has multiple teams in our area, which my son plays. Soccer is also pretty accessible for kids as well in metropolitan areas. Sorry for the essay, but it's hard to understand without being a part of it & what kids can play growing up tends to determine what you watch/love. We live in the Hunter Valley NSW, very entrenched in NRL.

As has been pointed out, Australia has a football divide. Those that follow footy are just as likely to support an NRL team. Rugby supporters, in my opinion, are far more antagonistic towards footy and are more likely to pick fault with the game. I get the feeling those who grew up with soccer as their primary game simply don't get it, assuming because it's a world game soccer is naturally superior. Footy is a wonderful game and worthy of your attention.

Welcome to our GREAT game of AFL...It is very fast paced throughout the whole game, the players have to be athletic as well as tough and as you have seen they don't wear any pads as this would slow down the play...Even when players get injured 9 times out of 10 they get up and continue playing the only time they don't is when they can't, there is a blood rule if a player is bleeding he must go off for treatment but goes back on when the bleeding has been stopped, It has been known for a player to continue playing with a broken jaw or nose or fingers...The game is the oldest football code in the world it was started in the late 1850s for cricket players to keep fit during the off season, cricket is a summer sport and AFL (Footy) is a Winter sport...The Aboriginals did have a game they played with a stuffed Wombat bladder used as a ball but we don't know for sure whether or not this was an influence for the start of AFL...Keep checking it out as many people from all over the world are discovering the game and many become true fans and get to know all the teams and pick one to follow.

A minor correction, it isn't a national holiday at the Grand Final, just a holiday in the state of Victoria, where the game is held. (Like the Rose Bowl, the Grand Final is held at the same venue each year, at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. The Melbourne Cricket Ground is one of the most well known stadiums in the world, particularly for its role in cricket, but also as an Olympic stadium (1956) and in footy.)

People will mislead you about AFL. People will tell you to watch the AFL fights/hard hit videos etc. This is the past and no longer part of our game due to concussion litigation. What you need to know is that is it's a game of fast paced skill, played by players who demonstrate enormous athletic abilities, it's a that the game is 360 degree, rather than opponent facing off against each other and it's generally high scoring and exciting. The ground is oval shaped and approximately 180m long. To best understand the game I'd recommend watching a full game. As far as players go there are both men's and women's professional competitions and player height is not a factor. I'm a Port Adelaide supporter and I hate any other team that we are playing. Unlike soccer fans around the world, fans are not segregated and fan violence is non-existent. Crowd numbers average around 35,000 spectators, with bigger games commanding up to 90,000. Round one of this season, which had nine games had approximately 450,000 seated spectators. Just a note on Port Adelaide (The Power) Although we are not the oldest football club in Australia, we were founded in 1870. We have a great deal of history...

The game was not originated by or from any Aboriginal game, but was created from scratch to help cricket players keep fit in the winter off season. Some Aboriginal tribes did have a game called Marn Brook in at least one dialect that is or was similar to Aussie Rules in a few ways, but the creators looked at and studied many existing games , sports and athletic training systems etc before writing the original rules to a game that proved impossible to score in. Many rule changes were made until the game was considered fair and entertaining. Australian Rules Football rules were codified in 1958 or before, and the first serious competition with a set fixture started in either 1958 or 1959......BEFORE any Soccer or Rugby competition had been instigated or had any rules codified. In short, the Australian Rules competition played in Melbourne in 1958 was the worlds first ever organised football competition and league or association.

Here's an idea of how popular AFL is Eamonn... The total number of club memberships in 2023 was 1,264,952. So one in every 21 Aussies holds an AFL club membership. Whereas in NRL, there were 303,878 memberships in 2023.

That's wild. I love the club membership idea as well. Someone mentioned it in the NRL and it's such a cool concept. Wish we had something similar in the NHL.

Probably the closest football to Australian football is Gaelic football, played in Ireland. Not sure why as each was developed on the other side of the world from each other about the same time in the 1860s. There have been international games between Australia and Ireland using hybrid rules developed from each game. Problem is AFL is a professional sport and I'm not sure that Gaelic football is yet.

It was not invented by Aborigines the origin of the game comes from keeping the Cricketers fit in the off season a man called Tom Wills devised the game and rules and it was originally known as Melbourne Rules

You unwittingly chose a very convoluted and confusing explanation video. The official AFL channel has a more succinct explanation video called “A Beginner’s Guide to Australian Football”. This British guy is really trying hard to explain a lot of detail about the game with a target audience being European (I assume, given all the soccer references). Good on him for trying, but I think it’s quite messy and difficult to understand.

Australian Football, or Aussie Rules if you prefer, is the oldest codified game of 'Football' in the world. I don't know how long soccer or gaelic football, or even gridiron, have been played for, but ours is the first game of football to be registered as 'football'. Just for the record, the first international game of Aussie Rules was played between the USA and Canada (Women's League). Enjoy!

There's now female league as well Same for rugby female league They don't play like princess's either Girl's play hard but due to their biology not the strenght or speed of guys They're willing players and hit each other just like the males For obvious reasons can't play against the guys Kids here stay playing as soon as can hold the ball Boys and Girls do play in same matches when very young still They used to play until purity but wasn't any league for them after that So why we now have female league's so,the girls can continue to play either sport Neither game has padding but you can have a soft head wear if you want to Normally the players wearing them have suffered concussion several times Reason head gear are soft to protect other players if head clashes that don't use protection Cheers mate 🦘🇦🇺👍

@EamonReacts about the Football (Footy) Codes all of Australian Rules Football, Rugby League Football, Rugby Union Football & finally Soccer (Football), which are, For those who DISLIKE &/or HATE any Football (Footy) Code/s with a real passion would &/or will say these, (1 One) Australian Rules Football, is referred as Aerial Ping Pong Football, (2 Two) Rugby League Football, is referred as Thugby League Football, (3 Three) Rugby Union Football, is referred as Thugby Union, &/or Rugby Yawnnion, (4 Four) Football (Soccer), is referred as Wog Ball and also both Fairies &/or Queenies Game. (NOTE) Aerial Ping-Pong A jocular (and frequently derisive) name for Australian Rules Football (or Aussie Rules as it is popularly called). The term derives from the fact that the play in this game is characterised by frequent exchanges of long and high kicks. The term is used largely by people from States both of Queensland & New South Wales in which Rugby League Football and NOT Aussie Rules (Footy) Football as &/or is the major football code. This interstate and code rivalry is often found in evidence for the term, including the early evidence from the 1940s. 1947 West Australian (Perth) 22 April: In 1941 he enlisted in the A.I.F. and joined a unit which fostered rugby football. Renfrey did not join in the &oq;mud bath&cq; and did not play 'aerial ping-pong', as the rugby exponents in the army termed the Australian game, until 1946. 1973 J. Dunn, How to Play Football: Sydneysiders like to call Australian Rules 'Aerial Ping-Pong'. But on the other hand, for those and including myself who actually do LIKE &/or LOVE any Football (Footy) Code/s with a real passion would &/or will say these, which are, (1 One) Australian Rules Football, is referred as the real Australian Football (Footy) Code of Australia, (2 Two) Rugby League Football, is referred as the Greatest Game of All, (3 Three0 Rugby Union Football, is referred the Game that they do Play in Heaven, (4 Four) Football (Soccer), is referred as the Beautiful Game & the World Game & also the Real Football Code of course.

No the game started in Melbourne in 1898 not indigenous (aboriginal) all the teams That play today weren’t in until after the turn of the year century but the war years Took a toll on players so some teams couldn’t field the amount needed but after the Second World War the different states had their own local league of 12 teams Before it became a national competition in the late 70s early eighties with Sydney Becoming the first interstate team 🤷
