Ice Holes (Part 1)

Winter swimming is one of my biggest passions and im lucky enough to have it as my business H2oTrails. This is where I coach a very particular
cold water immersion programme.
Our lake sits up 240m and is shallow which makes it a beast for them low temps.
We tend to get under 5*c before any other accessible lake in the UK and stays Icy for a long while.
So with this in mind we deliver a very different cold water course to help those that swim with us in this body of water

No one should be making Ice holes in moving water (rivers) or standing on Ice lakes without proper knowledge or gear.
Some of this advise is for people already experienced & have swam in the winter a good few seasons and are habituated/acclimatised + have the right gear with them.
Please note that for winter swimming in such low temps it isn't advised for anyone to just go jump into the water during winter as its incredibly dangerous and an even bigger note is please don't copy what I do and I wont be held responsible for anyone's actions.

A few swimming groups mentioning the noise impact breaking the ice with an axe has on fish/wildlife. Can you talk about that?

It's a good question, but when the ice is about there is always alot of noise for the little swimmers. But In the winter cold temps alot of fish dive deep anyway which reduces the effect from vibration and sound. The fish enter a type of homeostasis and slow down. I'm on a fishing lake and have not heard from ice fishers that it changes their normal behaviour. Also note that in time the fish can acclimatise to the movements and sounds just like a busy lake with power boats. Mind its Different if it was a small pond in your back garden full of big gold fish and you were cracking it few times a day or even daily as the little guys wouldn't be well. Also the ice holes I have been creating have been getting used by the otters to fish 🐟
