This video aims to clarify some things about what is happening in the body when you do the Wim Hof breathing technique. It is a very valuable technique and I'm quite certain it has improved my health personally, and has improved my meditation focus. However, the explanation I often see given for what is happening when you practice the breathing technique is incomplete and can be misleading. For example, the tingling you feel is due to a lack of oxygen availability, NOT because you have more oxygen. If someone wanted to push harder thinking they're getting super charged with Oxygen this could be detrimental. I have a lot of respect for Wim Hof and don't intend to criticize him at all. I simply want to clarify some points about certain physiological processes so it can help more people get the most out of this very interesting and useful technique.
★3:20 - My breathing is a bit too fast here. See Wim's demonstration at 1:28 for the proper pace. Just to be clear: when I do the breathing at the proper pace the Pulse Oximeter shows the same results, the same tingling patterns arise and the same phenomenon I describe will occur (increased breathing volume leading to hypocapnia and decreased oxygen availability as per the bohr effect.)
The Bohr effect is the key physiological phenomenon behind what is explained here. You can find more information on that at www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NB...

What makes u think we breath out co2? What tests are u relying upon? I think we breathe in air and breathe out air. I’m interested in the pH change Wim mentions he’s had measured in his blood.

You are hyperventilating. There is a difference between the way you are breathing and the way Wim Breaths. You inhale strongly and the exhale is a release. You are inhaling and exhaling inhaling and exhaling.... instead you should inhale, release, inhale, release, inhale, release, retain...

This is what I’ve learned with the WHM for the past year. My background is a combat vet that suffered from Traumatic Brain injury, anxiety, major depressive disorder which is all part of the PTSD. I would get headaches, with some painful enough to cause blurred vision, just the breathing alone for 30 days relieved the blurred vision. Cold therapy, cold showers/ cryotherapy has completely rectified my headaches very little if any swelling in the brain, along as very little anxiety and depression. I’m a stronger happier person since I’ve discovered the WMH. People are quick to question the validity in things, even though the science has already been done and there’s a difference between a scientist and a KZfaqr. Take it from someone that lives the WHM daily, it will change you life.

I have practiced Alternate Nostril Breathing in my Yoga practice for nearly 50 years, and have been trained in the Army for specialist jobs through breathing techniques, to swim underwater without mask or snorkel for up to 8 minutes. When I recently discovered the Wim Hof Method, after 10 years of no practice in breathing techniques, I was regularly doing rounds of 4 to 5 minutes of breath holding without stress. I am now coming up to my 74th birthday and have only one medical condition, damage Oesophagus from ‘heart burn’. I am following Wim’s method in all aspects and am completely invigorated by it. By the way, I do NOT force the out-breath, but let it out gently and not completely.

And it is less shocking and has become pleasurable .Just simply, take short 10 baby breathes quickly panting like a dog and then hold in the oxygen in the lungs )you will feel the expansion of inner muscle gently and count tens seconds and the do this 3 to 4 times in a day .You will begin to stretch the muscle easily and slowly over time. Before I watched this video, I did notice that doing the Wim Hof method without fully utilizing the breath hold on the exhale, seemed to make me feel worse through the day. I also noticed there were times when I couldn't get enough oxygen throughout the day. This made me wonder what was happening, so I started fully implementing the breath hold. This fixed the issues. I later learned about how important the breath hold was for causing the kidneys to produce erythroprotein, which enhances red blood cell production in the body. Because you don't feel the need to breath from lack of oxygen, the oxygen falls very low in the body as the cells start to use it up (once the CO2 triggers them to do so), and this is what signals the kidneys to produce the erythroprotein. Also, I have a suspicion that the squeezing of the body during at least part of the breath hold is important for the process as well. One thing to keep in mind is that this video is point out what happens with people, in general, when doing this breath work. It will take more scientific study to determine if the body adapts in new ways based on doing this breath work regularly, that actually improves the ability for the body to utilize the oxygen in low CO2 conditions. The body is amazingly adaptable and we are still barely scratching the surface on what is possible.

Guys and gals, KEEP IT SIMPLE, just watch the 10 min video that Wim Hof has on the Wim Hof breathing technique and do exactly as Wim Hof says to do. The guy has been doing this for 30+ years and has broken numerous world records and is training countless olympic athletes and other peeps that are all accomplishing amazing feats because of it. Just KEEP IT SIMPLE, listen and feel your body (get out of your mind), and do what Wim Hof says to do🤙

And I didn't die, however it felt like I was. Hyperventelation I can assure you, even when the entire body is numb with the pins and needles sensation, you will not die. Try hyperventilating. Using my BreatheEasy Lung Exerciser I’ve made tremendous improvements in my breathing capacity and endurance. Additionally, I now always breath through my nose and hold my breath with empty lungs for as long as I can to trigger an increase in red blood cells. I’ve seen my energy/libido increase, my outlook on life be bright and my sleep is deeper. My sinuses also stay clear due to the nose breathing. At night I tape my mouth gently shut to prevent mouth breathing. I’m truly grateful I got my breathing fixed!

At the moment this is completely unproven to have any benefits whatsoever..believ me, i hope this works as i have a serious health condition but its just , as far as i can see a way to get unfit but basically well people back to being fit. I know there are testimonials on his website and i know about the endotoxin tests but really thy add up to the sweet sum total of f.a. I like wim and i believe he is genuine..why not do some sort of high end tv show on the bbc..take 12 patients with various autoimmune diseases and follow them through a years worth of scientific scrutiny as they go through the Wim Hof method. no doubt there is power in the mind but i'm not sure how far this method can take someone with a serious disease. obviously , i'd love to be proved wrong..and thats what we need proper proof...it's been a long time since that endotoxin study..and nothings happened.

Great video!... however, let me point out something; I suggest you to breathe slower. I got the 10 week course a long time ago, and it has come to my attention that every youtuber trying to explain the method breathes WAY too fast... just look at the part of the vice documentary you pointed out, they are breathing maybe 0.5 at the speed you are doing it in your example. In my own experience, changing the pace to a more relaxed and almost effortless breathing cycle (still breathing really deeply) made me improve my own ressults a lot... and actually Wim does point that out many times during the course, its all about effortless deep breathing, don't force anything. Hope it helps, thanks for the video!

I just made a suggestion that would give his work more credibility, the way scientific papers get theirs. I don't ask or demand anything, just sharing a suggestion in an attempt to give something back to someone that seems to like improvements. @POTUS has lots of followers and seems to be doing well for himself, doing quite the opposite. I have a lot of respect for Wim Hof and I have practiced this guided breathing for more than 6 months. But some 4, 5 days ago a buzz on my ears started to appear that literally drives me crazy. It's tinittus and I'm going to the doctor in a few days to try to find a solution. I've googled and finded that more people have developed the same condition after doing this guided breathing. It's seems it has to do with the pressure developed inside the ear for the hold of the breath. Maybe it's not directly connected but until we all are certain it's better to analize deeper this method. Again, I have a deep respect for Wim Hof but please someone take this to his attention. Thank you for your content. I don't know why, but I killed my depression after watching your channel and following some of the tips. I feel better overall and even if times are bad and i'm bored I still never get depressed, maybe it's due to my better sleeping schedules so I never get bad hormone balance ( i'm not sure exactly). When you talked about willpower in a recent video, I found out how am I strong at pushing myself when I want to prove something worng. Topic was about prefrontal cortex and how somebody have disadvantages with it not talking control over things we have to do in long run (lets say grind drawing), I felt upset about it and didn't want to be like that, so I turned myself into productivity maniac and did so much, that I won't do even in a month. Just shared my expirience. I love your content with all my heart, it is what I need for my dreams to succeed. Like and Shared. And for till my last day subscribed.

hey mate... I've started the Wim Hof method few weeks ago ...with the breathing ,push ups ,stretching and ice bath almost every day... but I feel like it doesn't work or it's getting worse than better...I feel the benefits of the push up and ice bath and stretching...but the breathing makes me some trouble... In the beginning I could hold my breath after exhaling up to almost 3min...now it's getting down mostly even after the 3rd set I only reach up to 1,5min ...I clearly do something wrong or might overdone it or so... It's actually quite confusing , as I thought it's getting better and better but the opposite happen... You might have some advise ..Cheers mate

Do you breath throu nose? Do you do it before training? Do you get more relaxed by the method? How about your diet? Do you have proper deep sleep? I wouldn't put there a strict mile stones to accomplish. You do push ups so you know it already - there will be a wall on the road - and then you needs to change something a bit, push yourself a bit different way and without strict expectations. You need to keep fun and passion in that - otherwise your body will put imaginary limit that will be hard to overcome without enough inside resolve. First accept what big improvemnt you did already in comparison to where you started - then intuition will bring you ways to beat it itself.

when followed correctly this method increases circulation especially to areas of tension where maybe vessels have tightened and don't get the needed oxygen. I'm really glad you made this video. I have been interested in Wim Hof for a while but wasn't sure and thought it might just be some kind of large scale placebo. I was also confused when you made the video about mouth breathing about what was really going to be helpful since the two methods seem to oppose each other.

@hermanhelmich 5 жыл бұрын
Joshua Anderson He says you can, not you should get light headed. I do the Wim Hof breathing technique for 3 months now and only get light headed when i breathe as fast as this dude round the 3.20 mark, which is far too fast You should do it much slower. Fully in (from the belly) and just letting go (without force) Than again fully in and so on That’s the proper way And when you keep your breath push your energy to your skull You’ll get a natural high after a while Enjoy the ride bro

Serious question: it looks like you're hyperventilating, and it certainly doesn't match how Wim demonstrated earlier in the video. Something I'm missing?
@Hypnopotimus27
@Hypnopotimus27 4 жыл бұрын
The rate of breathing isn't too important as long as you have the effect of the tingling low oxygen sensation. The idea is to cause the body to reduce oxygen and carbon dioxide to confuse the body on the appropriate breathing pattern. Holding the breath then causes the blood oxygen levels to drop. This then leads to a release of cortisol,adrenaline and other stress hormones as the body enters the fight or flight mode due to interpreting the low oxygen as a life threatening situation. For added benefit go for a run or lift weights after this practice to reduce the elevated stress hormones. For the rest of the day yu should feel a high of relaxed nature as cortisol has spiked early in the day and reduces to an all time low after you "survived" the low oxygen levels.

Wim Hof is hyperventilating. "Fully in, let it go" - that's hyperventilation. And hyperventilation followed by hypoventilation is the entire point.

Just make sure you’re taking full deep breaths... your chest should puff out at first and then your stomach. A lot of people stop inhaling when their chest fills. You should definitively feel a tingling in about 20-30 breaths...

YES, I've been waiting for you to cover this. I've altered the breathing method a bit by substituting long, rhythmic nasal breathing in place of hyperventilation. The hallucinations are practically non-existent, but the "peace of being", or zen state, which accompanies the hallucinations are much more powerful. Perhaps because there isn't any hallucination to distract one from the zen state?

Slower breaths, please make an update video. This method shouldn't be forced but felt very natural. After long periods of doing this method i guess you can inhale and exhale faster but wim hof almost explained it as a state of meditation. Being one with self. Slow, conscious, controlled breaths.
