Think Slow, Act Fast by Michael Nyman, with a revised ending by John Godfrey, from a concert at SBC's Purcell Room in 1991. Finally available to hear complete for the first time - the version on a cassette-only release from 1991 had the ending faded out - this is how Icebreaker performed the piece in the 1990's.
Recorded: 4th May 2019, Purcell Room, South Bank Centre

James Poke, Katherine Pendry pan-pipes, piccolos
Rick Longden, Richard Garbett alto sax
John Godfrey,, Tom Armstrong keyboards
Damian leGassick vibes, congas
Teena Lyle congas
Steph Power bass guitar, guitar
Pete Wilson bass guitar
Ian Mellish sound & recording
Official Bootleg artwork design Tony Pritchard

Additional information about this performance: This performance includes John Godfrey's revised ending, the way Icebreaker always played it, which was faded out on the Official Bootleg cassette. Godfrey used some material the group found amongst the score material, which had been written for the piece but then left out by Nyman, to create a new ending (from 15:35), then from about 17:18 it is rearranged quite freely (during which the panpipes switch to piccolos).

Absolutely smashing piece (and performance thereof)! It's so great to hear this again after seeing Icebreaker play this piece live at the Bang on a Can Marathon in New York City in May 1991 (one of the best two or three concerts I've seen in my life). Three questions: 1) Who is the alto saxophone player who comes in with the David Sanborn-style high-octave solo starting at 13:57? I thought there was a different (star) sax player in Icebreaker in its early years, who left the group soon thereafter. 2) Weren't there actually 2 pianos and 2 (Fender Rhodes) electric pianos in this performance? 3) Didn't both the panpipe players pick up piccolos in the final bars?

Hi - glad you like it! So you were one of the people at that Marathon gig? Lots of people have talked about that performance of this piece, it's a shame we don't have a recording - but it was a really memorable experience. To answer your questions 1) Yes, our original lead sax player was Rick Longden, who came from a non-classical background and was a key part of the sound early on, but he left in 1993. 2) Well I had to rack my brains about who was playing in this performance, but I think the piece only ever featured two pianos. Hoketus of course had two Fender Rhodes (or other pianos) in most of their pieces, but there are only the two piano parts in this one. 3) Yes, thanks for pointing out that there are piccolos at the end, I'd forgotten about that - I'll change the line-up details.

@@Icebreaker_Official All good to know. If I recall correctly, there were 4 pianos in use in this piece in your Bang on a Can performance (though I think all 4 were Clavinova-type electric pianos).

@@dbadagna Well you could be right, tho I'm not sure how they would have been used. Trouble is it's such a long time ago I can't remember for certain. We also played Diderik Wagenaar's Tam Tam in the same Bang on a Can, tho not the same concert, so we had 4 keyboard players with us.

@@Icebreaker_Official I remember the Diderik Wagenaar piece (though I'd forgotten that his piece was played on a different concert), and also remember meeting him; he was nice enough to give me a sampler cassette containing several of his orchestral pieces. At 01:58 I can hear what sounds like multiple pianos entering successively, playing in different octaves. One of them sounds like a vibraphone and I don't hear any Fender Rhodes-type sounds.

@@dbadagna Fantastic composer Diderik Wagenaar, he should be better known. That point at 1:58 - yes that is two pianos gradually layering different octaves, plus the vibes, as you point out.
