Main feature of icedrive is that files stored on the cloud are not downloaded on your computer when you access them. It just uses your internet connection to bring up the file. This way files on your icedrive don’t take up any space on your computer. You can even store terabytes of files on your 120 gig SSD. Crazy.
But icedrive is kinda sneaky about this. It actually caches or downloads the files without informing you. This results in faster file loading and overall better experience. But you can just turn this feature off in the app settings if you don’t want it to do that.
Icedrive doesn’t offer more advanced features. This is definitely a downside when it comes to sharing files. There is no drag and drop functionality in the web app and the app sometimes freezes and doesn’t update the storage amount left.
Transfer speeds are very fast, it used all of my 400mbps when uploading and downloading files. This is a huge advantage - other cloud storage services cannot offer such a thing. It’s also way better and faster at downloading multiple files than google drive. It doesn’t zip them and tries to download a couple zip files. It just works normally.
Encryption is solid. It seems to use a different flavor of AES-256 bit encryption. It seems secure and reliable and icedrive engineers seem to know what they're doing by actually finding the best encryption algorithm to use for their service.
All in all I would choose icedrive if I needed a more affordable cloud storage solution than google drive. It offers some features that google drive lacks and is way better for storing large files. I had a great experience using it and I think others would too.
