This was an remarkable victory for International Human Rights Law and the Convention Against Genocide. I watched the entire South African and Israeli presentations before the ICJ earlier this month and listened to the entire ruling read from the bench this morning. The 15-2 rulings on almost all counts (16-1 in a few cases) were a DE FCATO call for an immediate ceasefire. In order to comply with the court's rulings there must be an end to the violence, immediate return of humanitarian aid, the release of captives, and basic preservation of life and wellbeing in Gaza. This was an intelligent, just and moral ruling based on the preliminary facts from the Israeli government officials and military leaders own words and actions. Ironically, they continually make the case of genocidal intent easy to prove as they believe they can flaunt international law and public opinion with impunity and have near unconditional support from powerful (veto wielding) allies. It is now up to the International Community to enforce the rule of law and hold Benjamin Netanyahu's government and its allies, all persons committing probable genocidal acts, accountable. The first report to the court of exactly how Israel is complying with the court's order is due one month from today - 26 February 2024 - and all evidence must be preserved. I suspect countries and corporations and many other organizations and individuals will think more deeply about whether there should be any continued support for Israeli's War in Gaza. Continued support via military, intelligence and financial aid to Israel now must come with the full knowledge that the UN's high court has made this preliminary ruling and will over the coming years make a final determination if Israel is committing the war crime of genocide. In the interim, this is a victory for life, love and light. As a Jewish American, I am profoundly grateful for this decision by the ICJ and for South African for having the courage and compassion to bring the case. Shalom.

Now is the time for the UN General Assembly to pass a law that can implement, with force if need be, the rulings of the ICJ. Or is the General Assembly just a useless entity ? Then it should have at least the power to oblige the Security Council to implement certain rulings from the General Assembly, without possibility of veto on issues of serious human rights infractions. Or at least give the right to a country or group of counties to implement that ruling. And issue economic sanctions to the party that is in default / commiting the atrocities / disobeying the ICJ ruling. Lawlessness, preferential treatment, large scale deception, injustice of being untouchable ect aren't acceptable. If this is how things stand then let's dismantle the UN and IMF which have allowed unfair enrichment of some and impoverishment of others cos the way things have been set up are to bring this horrible outcome.
