Just bought the "CondorUTILITY Leg RIG" from your website. It's literally WEIRD how perfectly the 705 fits in that bag. If they had set out to make a bag to perfectly fit the 705 it couldn't have been better. And since it's only slightly larger THAN the 705, extremely light and extremely well made it kinda takes the 705 to a whole new level of portableness somehow. Awesome catch Josh, thanks !

I just love the 705. I've had many radios since 1996 when i got my license, and the 705 is the most complete shack-in-a-box i have ever had. A portable does-it-all radio.

just bought one at a shop called Rocket in akihabara japan. Got it new for just under $700. Exchange rate has never been so good for Americans. It makes it worth it to fly to Japan just for DX equipment. Comes with Japanese manual but that's ok by me! Super happy with it so far. Thanks for this video!!

For digital, like VARA for example, I turn AGC off. You get 3 preset levels default is Slow, Med, Fast. You can swap one for off. Works the same on 7300 and 7100. Alternatively you can set up a preset with it off for digital, I believe. I have a habit of forgetting to switch presets.

Great crash course on the 705 Josh. What USB cable are you using? I have run into the common issue of locking up the radio when transmitting digital over USB. Curious if you had a magic cable, or if there is a string of ferrite cores out of camera view. Thanks for all you do for the hobby, your videos have taught me nearly everything I know about HAM radio!!
@HamRadioCrashCourse
@HamRadioCrashCourse Жыл бұрын
This is a two-part answer. USB micro cables vary wildly in quality. I have tested probably a dozen or more cables and found two I really liked. One was that yellow cable seen on the stream (reused from a Snapchat Spectacles box). The second answer, if you're getting RF back into the radio, it's a best practice to put the ferrite on the coax right before it connects to the radio. That will often alleviate the issue of USB dropping.
@smo921
@smo921 Жыл бұрын
@@HamRadioCrashCourse thanks, I'll add ferrite cores to the feed line. My experience with USB cables is similar. Keep trying until you find one that works for that application.

I do a lot of winlink while maritime mobile, I use a 40m efhw and I’ll sometimes have to stray off onto the WARC bands to get a reliable shore station. I have found if my tuning isn’t spot on, the common mode stuff would come back on the coax and do crazy things to the tablet and radio. Using a tx500 and digirig.

I’m hoping someone with more experience with the 705 radio can answer this question on made for Japan domestic market radio compatibility here in USA…. I’m considering purchasing a brand new IC-705 from Japan to save the money (about 40% savings). ICOM corporate states that their mfg warranty will not work here in US for Japan domestic manufactured radios. I’m not super concerned about the warranty. I’ve never had an issue with any high quality electronics brand I’ve purchased in past, but know there’s always a risk. Such is life. However, do you think that there will really be issues with band modes and other usability aspects as they suggest, or could it just be “spin” to keep business for local equipment dealers. What are your thoughts?

Japan has some different band allocations that we don’t and vice versa. I would NOT do this.

@@HamRadioCrashCourse Thanks Josh! You were the first Ham to get back to me and I appreciate that a lot given what I know to be your workload. you missed the basic easy stuff ... how are you connecting the antenna? You're on a desktop, so what are you doing for ground and counterpoise?? I'm bewildered. I stick an antenna out the window, can barely receive and TX never gets any reply.

I like the Icom 705 but it is very expensive for what it is. They should make it a least 50 watt. They should make it modular. Make it where you can add in a auto tuner, or a least add a amp. When your modular it would be a solid unit and still keep it one unit even with all the add ons. I think a field radio should be as simple as possible when your in a emergency situation. Maybe ad on AI for more automatic operations. ( I`m just brain storming) its one of the radios I really like. I`m waiting for when the unit go down in price.
@HamRadioCrashCourse

50 watts would double the size if not more. If you want simple, the 705 might be too much radio.

What I can't understand is why the 705 can't pull the repeater information down from the internet ? or firmware, seems like a logical feature to have, loading stuff from a PC is really old skool and shouldn't have to be done on a radio this advanced.
@HamRadioCrashCourse
@HamRadioCrashCourse Жыл бұрын
Pull it from where? There isn’t some kind of standardized repeater directory and many charge for the service. The easiest to use for ICOM is to use D-Star Info (Google that)

@HamRadioCrashCourse
@HamRadioCrashCourse Жыл бұрын
To repeat. There isn’t a centralized “internet” repository of repeaters. The ones that exist charge for access as a service. Further to access them via an application you have to build API hooks to query it. There is t a good business model for ICOM trying to do this then staff the people needed to make fixes when “the internet” changes formats or the current en vogue website changes. Ham radio is a technical hobby. Get on board with that.
