Check out 7 printers on one construction site. Icon CEO Jason has brought 3D printed construction to scale. I am super grateful to have the opportunity to check out this project while it's underway with the CEO of Icon himself Jason Ballard. This is the biggest 3D printed construction site I have visited yet making it the best! It has been incredible watching Icon scale up from small homes to large homes to entire development projects, I have a feeling what comes next will be even more amazing.

"Oh the possibilities!" Thanks Jarett for sharing this vision. We really do have the tools to create a day when a child asks the question: 'Why would anybody not have a place to live? Why didn't they just get a printed house on government land? How long was the government so stupid that they let people sleep on the streets, hungry or worse?' 100 structures at a time, yes, we will be able to print living space one Manhattan at a time soon. JOY!

How is this a gigantic leap. They have compromised their mission of bringing affordable homes to low income folks. Not many people can afford a $450,000 home. And, style is so uncreative. That’s the one thing 3D printing should do is create new exciting modern design not just slap a tradition stick roof on top. Congratulations you made an overpriced boring looking home.

Amazing that the quality of this product matches or exceeds the rest of the building envelope. Stick built construction has been innovating for a lot longer than 3d printed buildings. I'm already imagining these printing out giant dome buildings on Mars lol

This is awesome. Love the round corners. I did prefer the windows they did previously that went right to the floor, I believe they even said it was less expensive. Overall it’s the nicest and cleanest quality I’ve seen. Delicious!!

I think it was less expensive for the quality they were going for with that building. I am guessing they are using more cost effective windows in the new buildings.

@@Kyoril you have no clue. Both hot and cold travel right through concrete, as it’s a terrible insulator. Why respond when you have no idea about the subject.

1 of the 1st ones of these 3D printers that I viewed it actually can taper it can like 50% taper the extrusion of the cement to create a solid cement roof

Pine door jams covered in painted architraves ruin the entire house. Also the classic roof is a detractor. Next phase build with needing painted pine covering gaps and door jams and a more modern roof line.

What happens when years later you as the owner wanna do renovations will you need the printer or can you simply break down a wall to end the kitchen per se and create a more open place for example

Watching this vid for a second time! Is there a limitation on height with the material? It would make sense for them to partner with patient money to build rental properties - since the envelope is so durable they could probably generate cashflow for far longer than typical residential rental construction with less maintenance?

I think I saw they talked briefly somewhere about worked on level 2 buildings. There are both load constraints and also their printers need a bit to extend their high which probably lowers the head accuracy. Other 3d printing companies see doing it although icons newest buildings have the most accurate prints in the industry at the monent it appears so it might sacrifice quality in the short term.

And how exactly would this change today’s real estate agent model, especially when an owner decides to sell and, like the vast majority of homeowners today, has no time, interest or expertise in the complex process of buying and selling real property? Do you think the dude with the plastic cowboy hat wants to become immersed in marketing these things instead of building them? Construction is difficult enough as it is; this project is several months behind schedule.

@@thardyryll This technology has made the home building process more efficient, thereby lowering the actual cost to build a home anyway, and it lowers the cost of a house according to the current capitalist economic model of society. This means that people who own houses for sale can no longer charge as much of a scarcity rent for access to the property they monopolize. That elimination of scarcity means that they will literally have to lower the price for their house to compete with the new abundance.

@@thardyryll Some companies are selling/mortgaging their homes for around 30,000, that's a fairer price for a decent sized home.

@@bxhrbr4940 Incase you haven’t heard, there’s a housing shortage in the U.S. ICON builds the home, but Lennar sets the price and they’re not discounting. Add on top of that higher interest and affordability will continue to be an ongoing issue, especially in Texas where everyone is trying to get to.

Neat, but the 3-D thing still has a long way to go, imo. They only seem interested in big Govt.-funded projects, or High-End Hipster show pieces. Nothing for regular people wanting to build a single, simple house for themself, it seems. I hope I'm wrong.

Apparently, some houses are being mortgaged for about $30,000. That's not a bad price compared to other housing costs, I think it will eventually serve the purpose of just someone wanting to have a single home.

The sameness of the interiors of these homes, with their concrete-meets-toothpaste construction, is stultifying. For all its drawbacks, a conventional house is in fact that: a house, not the equivalent of living under a freeway overpass with amenities, with walls of a texture reminiscent of sisal-wrapped cat scratching posts. And imagine trying to remodel one of these squirted-wall dwellings, jackhammer in hand. In the end there might be acceptance, if only because there is no other choice.

All houses look similar before they are done, wait for the finishes, I bet individuality and character will show. Also remember the printers can make any design, icon and Lennar choose to go with a cohesive design that is similar throughout the neighborhood as with most 100+ home developments.

This is a noble project, certainly better than the government's typical latest tax scheme. However, it's hilarious to me how financiers, investors, and the ruling class would have people living in 100 brand-new homes rather than homes that already existed under their ownership. Is it really sensible to have people choosing between these options, rather than being determined to change the system itself, a change that would facilitate people living in homes that are ALREADY BUILT rather than living in homes that are being built IN UNNECCESSARY ADDITION to (hilariously) the already-built homes? The whole thing just seems like a huge scam if you look at the big picture, although it's nice this is being offered at all.
