Coming up, a song that has received a lot of hate… Many don’t want to admit that they know every lyric… In fact, I would say if you’re a Gen-Xer and you claim not to know every word to this massive #1 hit you’re a big fat liar… I'm talking about Ice Ice Baby by Vanilla Ice. I present to you an exclusive interview, with maybe the greatest Bottled Lightning story of them all. For about a year Robert Van Winkle, AKA Vanilla Ice was the biggest star on the planet. He was at #1 for 15 weeks, Madonna wanted to date him, he had the first rap #1, and then overnight he was cast off. He ripped off Queen and David Bowie’s Under Pressure- the beat and bass line. Then he got caught in some tales from his past and he was done. Many were livid that he ripped off the song and didn’t pay out royalties at first, but he actually introduced the song to many all over the world…as it wasn’t a hit in America. So, so, so many twists and turns to this story. It's the breakdown of a song that still moves the needle, in an exclusive Professor of Rock interview.

Hey music junkies, Professor of Rock, always here to celebrate the greatest artists and the greatest songs of all time. if you can still quote the best lines from Back to the Future, Top Gun, and Ferris Bueller’s Day off all these years later. you’re gonna dig this channel. Nostalgia central. Make sure to subscribe below right now and click that bell do you always get notified when the new ones drop… We also have a Patreon you'll want to check out. It’s time for another edition of our series Bottled Lightning where we celebrate a song or album that was king for a day. Here we honor artists and bands and that rocketed up the charts… but for reasons unknown weren’t able to sustain that success. Called by some ‘one-hit wonders’, we celebrate them instead as lightning in a bottle. Today we are we have an interview with the artist behind one of the preeminent bottled lightning songs ever…. And trust me, even if you’re not a fan of the song, you’ll want to stick around for this story and interview because it will surprise you. It’s the story of a song that any Gen-Xer knows the lyrics by heart even if you won’t admit to it. It’s from an artist who got chewed up by the corrupt music industry and was spit out and actually made it through He sampled the bassline from Queen and David Bowies’ phenomenal single Under Pressure. I’m talking about Ice Ice Baby.
Vanilla Ice was born and a song that was the B side to his remake single Play that Funky Music became a #1 smash in 1990 and helped his album "To the Extreme" sell over 8 million copies and spend 15 weeks at #1, and according to some sources including Robert Van Winkle himself, AKA Vanilla Ice, all in all, it was the impetus of selling over 40 million singles and record worldwide and a song that has garnered 1 billion streams.
I caught up with Vanilla Ice and got the whole history behind this lightning-in-a-bottle pop smash. Now before we go into this interview I want to say that Vanilla Ice is one of the nicest guys I’ve ever met. In my time around him, I witnessed some things that really impressed me.

I think that Ice Ice Baby and Under Pressure both have their place. It seems to me that most people think the problem was that he used a sample but it wasn’t. Every time I see you do a new interview, it's like you out-do yourself just by being yourself. And the variety of artists that you get to meet from all walks of life, young and old, famous or infamous makes every interview unique. You make it look too easy, but in reality you are documenting music history itself. The best part of your show is how much you know about tons of every artist's music and how relaxed they are telling their stories like never before. You, my friend, are one of the best interviewers out there... and seriously talented. Thanks for your excellent work and have a great New Year 2023! Cheers!

It's a good deal for everyone involved. Queen & David Bowie owe Ice a considerable debt of gratitude for raising the profile of Under Pressure. I was around back then and remember it all well. Under Pressure was "MTV legendary" because of its cool video, but -- and people aren't really aware of this -- IT WAS NOT A BIG HIT. Actually, Under Pressure is a glorified demo recording that did well. 50 percent of its "legend" today comes from its association with Ice Ice Baby.

I remember when this song came out. Me and my best friend were from a strict christian upbringing where rap was seen as ungodly. Yet, when we were alone, we felt free to listen to whatever music moved us, despite our parents. I remember that we would record ourselves on tape rapping along with the single, as there were no home karaoke systems back then. I still know the lyrics to this day because good music is devine, it is never ungodly.

Butch the "catchiness" part was a RIP OFF of another Song that we Baby Boomers found "catchy" LONG before "Ice" came around. It was as if people were thinking that "catchiness" was NEW. This was only because they never had the pleasure of loving "Under Pressure" as we did for that EXACT SAME REASON. "it's catchiness" to much to resist. It was because "under PRessure" was a song with a VERY important message. Peolple are producing more and more "humanity" where all they care about is soft porn in their music, visuals, and can I leap and jump like a monkey to the redundancy of it all. I never understood how ANYONE could know every lyric to a song where "Ice Ice Baby" overshadows eerything else in that song.

This song came out at the perfect time for me. I was in my mid-20's, newly divorced, out clubbing again and rediscovering the joy of dancing again. ICE ICE BABY was my freedom anthem. Every time it came on the radio, I had to firewall the volume and blast it to the world. And everyone around joined in on the singing! It was unifying. When the music industry turned on him, I stubbornly defended him. When people asked why I still listened to his music I would respond "Don't pretend you were not a fan 3 months ago." If it was a great song then, it's still a great song now. I'm proud to be one of the few that let the bandwagon pass by. VIP is STILL my JAM and I still jump in the moment I hear that hook. Side note: This song also made me go back and appreciate the original UNDER PRESSURE. And HAPPY FEET introduced the very young to both versions in its time as well.

That's just it, it was it's redundant, repetitive "catchiness" of that ONE phrase "Ice Ice Baby" with the rip off of Queens "artistry" in th background. That was LAZINESS and it began a trend of "commercialism" that seeks to reward a "hook" or a redundant mindless ANYTHING to "Dance" and "Jump" to, and has effectively "murdered" "legacy craftsmanship". That "catchiness" in th background belongs ot "under Pressure" and the "deep" meaninigfulness to that song during the beiginning of Aids in 1981. But thanks to these types of "commercialism" that legacy is ERASED in the generations to follow. Whenever, people hear that "catch" they should think of "Under Pressure" Generation to Generation, Not "jumping and leaping to to mindless dance moves that are tied to a period that is transient. I did not appreiciate ANY of the Queen subsequent ripoffs. And Queen was not even one of my top groups. I just liked their artistry and chart-music. I DO recall, however, that when Queens "Crazy Little Thing Called Love" came out, that I thought it was ELVIS and I did not like Elvis to much. So, I did not want another Elvis song on the chart post his death. But, Once I found out it was "Queen", I saw the song in a new light and it grew on me, and now I find to be my Senior Year of High School a "classic". So, by the Time Under Pressure came out, I went out an immediately got it, because it had a very important message, I could relate to. Gnereations toi come should hear that "catchy" part and think "Under Pressure" and it's message...NOT a yet ANOTHER among millions of "move around and jump around" tunes. Waiting for the second go round of these commerical types to be the SAME as the first, and ALL the rest. It's BORING

I have to argue Ice made Under Pressure immortal.

@@xxlilly_playsxxkiz9980 Not if people do not even KNOW, it came forth from "Under Pressure" and it's catch when hear people think of ONLY "Ice" and Vanilla Ice and how great HIS music is. Queen's "Under Pressure" is ERASED. When people download a tune or otherwise obtain and instantly listen to a tune, they NEVER think of the "Writer" or "Artist" who created it, unless the Song is CHANGED to always read "Ice, Ice Baby" by Vanilla Ice: "featuring" Queen & David Bowie. Then Their Song is immortal. That should be "legally" Demanded by the Artist OR you do NOT use the tune AT ALL.

I'm smiling so much to see how at peace he is. I remember how bitterly embarrassed he was in the late 90s and early 00s. On some MTV show to retire music videos they thought sucked, he destroyed the "Ice Ice Baby" master tape by smashing it with a baseball bat. Then he trashed a good chunk of the studio set. He declared his hatred of the song when he was on VH1's Surreal Life. He even spray painted over his portrait. So, yeah. Super happy to see him embracing his history.

Chances are that "Surreal life" stuff was scripted by producers, most of the reality shows have a great deal of staging in them...

@@dianamgallagher I'd believe they staged things to set him off, but I'd be somewhat surprised to learn he was acting. He seemed legit in negative feels.

Great interview! My buddies not only knew the lyrics word for word, they could perform the dance too. Good times.
