Elvis was must-see TV and the older elites hated that. Ed Sullivan deserves respect on a grand scale. He gave Elvis and the business the wheels to break everything open. He had 50% to 80% of every TV in the nation on. Think of that math. Elvis was a youth generation revolution icon.

The Jordanaires, the bakground singers, were dressed in what was generally considered 'flashy' for the times. Elvis' attire was far beyond that. He wore what he wanted to. Can you imagine being 21 years of age, and, as an entertainer, in uncharted territory? No male artist before him had generated the kind of hysteria Elvis did in his female fans. To be able to just hold your arm in the air for a moment, knowing the audience is on the edge of theirs seats watching and waiting for any gestures of spontaneous energy must have been a powerful feeling. Those were very sedate times. Elvis changed all of that.

This was the third of 3 appearances on the Ed Sullivan show. After the controversy of the Milton Berle appearance the conservative Sullivan swore he would never have Elvis on his program. But after Elvis's infamous appearance on the Steve Allen Show (where Elvis sang to a dog) beat Ed in the TV ratings, Sullivan had to acquiesce. Elvis's first two times on Sullivan weren't censored but after receiving complaints they shot him from the waist up for his 3rd appearance. Your statements about the Ed Sullivan Show's cultural importance are on target. The guest shots of Elvis and the Beatles on his show arguably changed history as we know it. Acts like the Rolling Stones, the Doors, Diana Ross and the Supremes, the Jackson Five, etc, followed. TV was brand new in the 50s-60s just like Rock music. There was only 3 networks and the Sullivan show was the most popular. So every member of a family would be exposed to what was playing on a given night. Even people who hated Elvis knew who he was. That's different from today's diffuse choices and sources where even the most popular artists may be watched by their fans but remain unknown to others who can go to their own avenues of entertainment. After this last appearance on Sullivan, Elvis became too big and expensive and would appear on TV only 3 more times in his lifetime. I'm a fan of all Elvis's eras. The 50s was where he established rock n roll as the most dominant form of pop but the music and style he established for himself in the 70s was both creative and original; allowing for the rich powerful vocals of Bridge Over Troubled Waters and the Rock n Roll of Burning Love. I'd like you to react to the 3 song stand-up medley that includes Heartbreak Hotel, Hound Dog, and All Shook Up, from the 68 Special. If you haven't watched it already I think you'll be impressed.

Once Elvis returned to live performances in 1969, he surround himself with the best accompaniment including backup singers. The Sweet Inspirations were with him to the end and the male backups included the Imperials and JD Sumner and the Stamps. There are so many 1970 songs from live performances worth checking out. He's very youthful there. He really doesn't really start declining until sometime late 1973.

Yeah that's so frustrating about not being able to see the moves. And I guess at some shows too they would actually put up these panels at the front of the stage to where you could only see him from the waist up, laugh. When I was much younger I was totally into his rockabilly stuff and was covering some of that early stuff in a band I was in, and I had a double CD of Elvis's greatest hits and the only ones I liked at the time were on the first CD. Now I like all of them of course. But at the time I remember being convinced that his best stuff by far was from 1955 through 1958 before he went into the Army. But then again, some of those early movies after the Army had some terrific songs on them. And of course at the time I didn't have videos to any of this stuff, it was just the audio only and I loved those so much. You can tell a lot by the dates of these performances too, if you keep in mind that really the one that changed everything was the Milton Berle Show performance in June of 1956, when he did Hound Dog and then slowed it down at the end and just almost turned it into a burlesque, laugh. That set off a firestorm and so by the time he was ever on The Ed Sullivan Show for the first time much later that year, it was already pulled back some and Don't Be Cruel was from January or whenever it was in the next year. There's just a little bit of footage here and there from even before the Milton Berle show. One is a stage concert of some sort and I can't remember what the song was but it's got Incredible video quality. And then there's some pretty poor quality from the Louisiana Hayride, both from 1955 and from 1956. That stuff is fascinating. And then beyond that, the best way to get an idea of it, is that there are a whole bunch of still photographs out there catching him in the middle of his spontaneous crazy moves really early on, and that stuff to me is more amazing than anything we ever saw on television. Some of it was just so incredibly athletic.

If you like Elvis Presley’s early hit songs, listen to his first “greatest hits” album, “Elvis’ Golden Hits” (1958). Someone here on KZfaq posted a playing of a never-played copy of the album, that was released “In Living Stereo” that year. I highly recommend that you listen to that compilation album here on KZfaq (it is about 35 minutes of great Rock music by Elvis Presley).

I agree. The early Elvis, by far, is the best! And even though he never wrote any of his own songs, he was the whole package of looks, awesome voice, sound, performance, and picking the right material that would turn the whole world unto this new form of music called Rock N' Roll. At that stage of his career, the contributions he made put him up there in iconic status with Led Zeppelin, The Beatles, Hank Williams Sr., Ray Charles, and other musical geniuses. I never got into the overweight 1970's Elvis. At that point in his career, he was kissing the same butt that he used to kick. Peace

Early Elvis actually seemed "dangerous". His dark sullen eyes, sneering lip, greasy hair. He seemed like a 1950's juvinile delinquent that would steal your car, or your daughter. His moving hips were understood by millions of teenage girls, and their parents were terrified. Elvis could be charming and even shy, but his dark eyes could also suggest menace. Elvis expressed that dark side in the film "Jail House Rock", but his later films tried to clean up Elvis, and he never really got to make serious films again.

BRO, I love background singers/music too. When I attended University, I was able to take voice lessons. Usually, it's the student majoring in vocal or instrument, but I was lucky enough to have a good instructor to add me. Sullivan did show his whole body during his Sept and Oct. 1956 performances. However he warned Elvis to tame it. Sullivan then received negative reaction, so these Jan performance were waist up. I was 11 and 12 yrs old and tuned in. Have you ever watched the movie American Graffiti? The director George Lucas was born in 1944, just like me. The movie is set in 1962, and is about teens that just graduated high school, having a typical night on the town. It has all that early music playing during the entire movie. I think you would enjoy the movie, music and cars. BTW, it was nominated for several academy awards, including best picture. It portrays life as it was for teens back then and features several actors who later became big stars, including Harrison Ford.

I was never allowed to watch Elvis on the Ed Sullivan show, I had to stand in the kitchen to listen because of the danger of the gyrating hips 🤣. Remember, it was the '50s. Great review and insight. Keep in mind apart from his unique talent, charisma and looks, Elvis came on the scene at the perfect time. Any earlier TV wasn't in many homes and the public wasn't looking for societal change. Any later and he would be competing with the beatles, stones Tom Jones etc and he wouldn't have been considered revolutionary. Also remember how Elvis' name played such a huge roll in his world stardom. Would "Joe Presley" have been as famous? "Elvis" was easy to remember and totally unique. Say the name 45 years later and it still puts you in a a whole different frame of mind. Yeah, the Lord got it right when he created Elvis!

I'm pretty sure this was Elvis' first appearance on Ed Sullivan, and back then his was the show you wanted to be on if you wanted to make it big. He invited a lot of "taboo" (rock) artists on his show when nobody else would. He was also known for inviting black artists on as well. When Sullivan called Elvis a "decent, fine boy," he wasn't just being nice. To that point, rock was seen as black music, or "the devil's music," and by Ed saying that, he suddenly made it okay for people to listen to his and rock music in general, which opened doors for a lot of people. Ed Sullivan's endorsement was like gold. He pushed everyone from Chuck Berry to, later on, the Temptations. If you got on his show, you were basically a star at that point. And yes, it was the mid-50s, so they only showed him from the waist up because they thought his dancing was pornographic. A lot of the early rock songs were sanitized, and Elvis was no exception. Little Richard had Tutti Frutti, which was heavily sanitized because of his gay references, and Elvis' One Night of Sin became One Night With You. You should react to the original version, One Night of Sin, so you can hear what people in the 1950s thought was "unacceptable." I'm pretty sure it's about an orgy - or some sexual liaison gone wrong.

The thing is, that the camera only filmed Elvis from the waist up, because Elvis moved his legs and his hips too much in the live shows the year before in 1956. The police also filmed his live shows in the arenas on tour, with the order not to move like that in public. It's too much sexuality for the etablishment at that time. It was too dangerous.
