You notice he was only filmed from the waist up. The network thought his movements were obscene and not appropriate for tv. In fact, Ed Sullivan stated he would never have Elvis on his show as he hosted a family show. After Elvis appeared on another show and the rating soared, Ed Sullivan changed his mind and signed him for a 3 show deal.

Did you see where Elvis himself noticed he was only being shown from waist up? It’s about 15-20 seconds before the end of the clip. You can see Elvis look up to the overhead monitor … and he kept his eyes there for 2-3 seconds. Then an expression just fleets across his face as though he’s thinking “oh, that’s how you want to play this game? Let me show you what I think of that!” Moments later he just lets rip with his signature dance moves, which he had been polite enough not to display at the show’s producers’ request. Elvis assumed they would therefore show him full length but all bets were off when he realised he was only being filmed above the waist .. as though they didn’t trust him to keep his word.

Rainey, the quartet in the background is the famed Jordanaires. They formed as a Southern 'gospel group in 1948 and have recorded sacred and secular music for Capital Records, RCA Victor, Columbia Records, Decca Records and many smaller independent labels.' They have 'provided background vocals for Elvis in live appearances, recordings and feature films from 1956 to 1972.'

That song was written by a black songwriter named Otis Blackwell. I was pretty young when it came out in the 1950s. Mr. Blackwell also wrote other songs for Elvis, like "Return to Sender" and "All Shook Up".......Keep up the good work.

Giant Elvis fan here. I think you keyed in on something really interesting when you said that Elvis showed his personality while performing. I do think that's a big part of his appeal, but I never heard anyone really articulate it like that before. Kudos!

Saw you were doing Elvis and had to subscribe. You could do an Elvis recording everyday for a year and still not go through half of his recordings. This man has sold more music than anyone recording artist on record. Over one billion and still counting. There are so many of his recordings that are great. Keep doing Elvis. You can't go wrong this him.

They didn't show him from the waist down in those days because he was considered obscene. :D That's why he was laughing- because he had to do something. He was great.

I love watching this because I love watching The Jordanaires and Elvis is always charismatic as can be but what's such a shame about this is this is later in 1956 when they decided they wouldn't come him from the waist up so any does that bit at the end? Yeah man it's intense what he does with his face in his arms but we don't even get to see anything below that because that's how ridiculous it was. But however there is footage on KZfaq in black and white another television appearance earlier that year on another variety show, the Milton Berle Variety Show And don't fall for the really short version out there that's like 2 minutes long, because that was the whole point, back then including even on that at Sullivan Show if you noticed, they typically have the into abbreviated versions of their songs just cuz it has to be really quick put the songs weren't really even all that long to start with but anyway back on that June appearance on Milton Burle, that's where he set the fire storm off. He was doing hound dog and the band had never practiced it this way before but then even right up until the day he died he was always known as being extremely unpredictable, so we always had the best musicians around him. Butter any rate in that June television appearance, they hit the end of the song really quick and it was supposed to be over because I had dropped like a verse in a chorus or whatever to make it be short, but the audience was just going nuts in Elvis instinctively just kept it going right when they hit the final note and it was supposed to be the conclusion. And his band immediately adjusted but what he did was he started doing it in half Tempo. So it is much slower. And that gives a chance for him to show off a lot more of the actually legit athletic shit he was doing, a lot of course drink if you know what I mean. Doing all these weird moonwalk oriented kinds of things and holding himself on his tiptoes with his abdomen but, it suddenly started to almost come off more like a burlesque, like a couple decades before, and also just like a striptease I guess you would say except it what he was doing is nothing compared to shit you even saw in the half time of the Super Bowl the other day. But it set off a firestorm. The next few weeks and the next several months which led to this whole thing you just watched where they wouldn't show him from the waist down, you had the more racist elements of white culture just going nuts, they were in a fever and frothing at the mouth. They were throwing the n-word at him and getting his records removed from to Fox's and radio stations which was the main way to communicate your music back then. I mean they really did not like him. I truly cannot repeat the language that was used about that back then. But anyway I was just hoping you would understand that and if you get a chance, go back and look at that June I think it is June television appearance of the Milton Berle variety show. Hound dog. Don't fall for the short one that's like 2 minutes because then the part that I'm talking about got censured from it, look for something slightly longer than that.

I think he and his wife probably had an understanding about the women he was with, because the women don't seem to have anything to do with why she divorced him. He was a workaholic who was always recording, touring, filming movies, and he had a very long Vegas residency. So he didn't have much time for family vacations and things like that. So he'd get lonely and hook up sometimes, and his wife did a bit of extramarital activities too. That's just what it's like to be with a celebrity.
