Cantrell’s career outside of Alice in Chains has consisted of two solo albums and contributions to major film soundtracks. Jerry’s first solo album, Boggy Depot, was released in 1998, followed by his second album Degradation Trip (2002). In addition to his solo artist work, Jerry Cantrell has released music on soundtracks for several films including Spider-Man, The Cable Guy, John Wick 2, Last Action Hero, and The Punisher.
Learn about his growing up around music, his love for Willie Nelson, Elton John and Ace Frehley's Gibson Les Paula and how these artists were influential in his own songwriting for Alice in Chains and his solo projects. @@auntjenifer7774 No, if you listened at the end Jerry says they've been together for 33 years became a band in 1987 also he was getting ready to turn 54 and he was born in 1966. So it was early this yr before all of the mask wearing and Jerry's birthday is in March. So to answer your statement, NO, it was filmed in 2020. Have a great Day!

He's still got a lot of years ahead of him and will continue to make great music. His career is still active and although he is HOF- qualified, there's no need because he's still active and relevant. He's an automatic shoe-in, but not retired yet. HOF in 10 or 15 years, and we're all looking forward to the music he will make in the meantime.

I think that when you have a best friend, when there were times of great challenge and frustration, even anger, a suddenly that friend is gone all the frustration is gone too. You'd give anything to have them back, but you can't and the things that you remember (unless you're jaded and can't forgive) are the good. That's what remains. You remember their smile, voice, the good times, the love. You bury everything else with them. That said, I watched a lot of these interviews, and this one is definitely one of the best.

Long ago, I read Jerry saying he has an unremarkable voice. It's true that his voice is not one-of-a-kind, not nearly as unique as Layne's. But he has a nice, warm, soft voice, and he sings in a truthful way, sort of the way he plays guitar. It might have something to do with his country roots. So it totally made sense that he sing, and there was a really nice contrast between their respective voices and singing that made them sound better together. The sound of them is like drinking chili pepper laced hot chocolate. Jerry was the chocolate. 😂

@@murk4552 Jerry grew up listening to country thanks to his parents. He has talked about how he enjoys that style of music and how there is truth in their lyrics and how he enjoys their storytelling songs. Country music is in his roots, he grew up with it, and it's noticeable in some of his guitar work and it's also inspired his songwriting style. Maybe read slower next time. Nowhere does Gomba13 say Jerry has that country style of singing, nor do they say AIC or Cantrell's work is made for conservatives.

Ain't that the truth. I haven't followed in years, but I have listened to some of their new stuff, but, honestly, to me, that's the definitive sound of Alice in Chains. Even off one of their more recent songs there's a point where the dual vocal harmony was so eerily close (more than normal) to Layne and Jerry that it gave me goosebumps.

Personally, I wish people would let us celebrate Jerry without having to bring up the tragedy of Layne. He is an important part of Jerry's story, but not one that needs to be dragged up on every freaking occasion. Let the man live.

@@quadbox You assumed that I only talked about Layne after watching the whole interview, which is not true. You only found another comment of mine that had some likes and because of that it was easier to find, but I also left comments talking exclusively about Jerry solo career and how I was happy with the new record. Now, I don't see the problem to also comment about Layne in a interview that Jerry himself talked several times about him and Alice in Chains early years. I'm a huge fan of Jerry, his solo work and the new lineup of AIC and the last 3 records. Saw them live twice. I don't go talking about Layne in everything they do or post. But Layne was a fundamental part of Alice in Chains and there's nothing wrong to talk about him and remember him even after all those years. Also, lots of bands end up after the singer dies, so that's why I talked about in the other comment that I was glad they didn’t. Now I know that there are people who only talk about Layne and don't show interest for AIC and Jerry new stuff, but I'm not one of them.

I admire professional musicians but I also admire media people whose job it is to interview them. The true professionals among them are those who know how to make them talk all while making the conversation about the musician and taking up as little room in it themselves as possible. It's fine to see and hear the interviewer, as long as they are professionals. I do have a few favourite interviewers, you see and hear them but all they really do is highlight the interviewee. Not all interviewers are annoying as you say.

The MTV unplugged set is why I'm watching this video. I recently discovered it and it's sent me down this Alice in chains rabbit hole. It's one of the best live performances in music history along with queen live aid. Seeing Layne sing with that type of emotion and soul was just incredible.

I've always said that Jerry Cantrell is the secret weapon that all other grunge bands lacked, and I still stand by that. Not that I don't love the other grunge bands, but what Jerry brings to the table is so unique and special.

Despite the era, I never really felt like Alice and Garden were grunge... Something about them eclipsed that genre. Too heavy (Alice)... Too complex/proggy (Garden)...

This is the best interview ever. I was so heartbroken & teary towards the end when Nutshell started playing. Jerry Cantrell & his music has inspired me in ways I can't even begin to describe. AIC has helped me get out of my bed & live. My heart heals and breaks every time I listen to AIC because I know how special they really are. RIP Layne & Star. Jerry Cantrell is really the backbone of the band and his contribution is worth all the gold in this world. Thank you for this interview.

Most GOOD musicians don’t hold their self in high esteem. If you watch interviews of Chris Adler, Scott Weiland, Layne Staley, Chris Cornell, etc., they’re normally fairly humble and just want to talk about their love for music and their lives around it.

@@ascension6699 I've seen them live 3 or 4 times years ago at concerts where they were openers. They sucked at every show. If they were comparable to Alice in Chains, they would be compared to Alice in Chains. It has never been said or written, and never will be, that Queensryche is one of the top rock bands of all time. One in a hundred people couldn't even tell you the name of a single song of theirs. Of course they have fans, but comparing them or trying to put them in the same category as AIC is like comparing Bob Dylan as a vocalist to Robert Plant.

I love this interview. It's all about music, friendship and bonds it creates, and these are the values that last longer than one's life. Jerry knows it best. Luckily nobody asked him questions about addictions and cancelled gigs. In the end it's the music that matters the most. Riff Lord, Sir Jerry Cantrell, can play any riff from an Alice record and time travel back to that time of creation. I have the utmost respect for Jerry. So level headed and went through such an amazing journey putting out this beautiful music, and he's so humble about the creation process and wanting everyone who was involved to get their dues. I can see why he loved Layne so much, Layne having been there for Jerry at such a crucial point. What they created together was fookin magic, and Starr, and Kinney, and Inez... We got from Alice what we got because they poured every ounce of their soul and energy into it... As a fan I couldnt be more grateful for all these guys.

My band had the privilege of touring with Jerry for a couple months during the Degradation Trip era. The dude overflows with the most down-to-earth kindness you'll ever encounter. Such a generous and gracious host. Icon is an understatement!

Thats amazing. Really, as a guitar player I am continuously listening and learning from jerrys work. I'm glad he is finally getting his recognition. Many of us in his alice days did not realize he actually sings in most of their catalog. And jar was mostly his work in terms of arranging composing, it was his baby. But so many of us singled out layne because he was the face of this band. I guess thats like the Beatles having the face of Lennon. So most of jerrys recognizable success came after aic disbanded and he finally stepped out of the shadows and produced boggy and his solo masterpiece d trip. As jerry now has toured and played with all his lengdary guitar 🎸 heros, he earned the right to be seen as an icon. But through all that he is so grounded, humble, and continues to thank those who put him there. That you got that chance to tour with him, thats incredible. An experience you'll always be grateful for and can relive in your mind as you grow older. As a musician thats priceless. I hope you still perform yourself as being a musician is an phenomenal 🎁 one must share with the 🌎. Good luck to you, keep rockin😎

And this is why we shouldn't cut music programs from public schools. We should actually make them mandatory. In the interview, Jerry said rocking out in music class was a huge joy and shaped the direction he went in.

So underrated. This guy is a living legend. Can't even imagine how his life was tough and he still managed to get where he is today. Time passes and Jerry is becoming classy, but his tone still remain powerful and kickin. Thank you, Gibson!

Arthur i agree with you. He is so underrated. I remember in my teen years when i first heard AIC it didnt get me at the time. Now many years later i think this guy is one of the best guitarrists ever. He plays with feeling, his guitar tone is amazing, heavy, huge. One of my heroes.

Gibson TV feature him in his own episode, along side Bob Rock and Tony Iommi… let alone the fact he is widely celebrated and respected, especially amazing for a musician who plays such dark and non-mainstream music. So no, not underrated, but legend, yes.

Just look at Nirvana and how they made success, Alice In Chains deserves the same recognition, and don't forget about how much shit they went on Clash of Titans tour, no band in the planet were so persistent to make a full tour with everyone throwing shit at them. Also, I say underrated because the newest albuns are criticized by a lot of people that say "no Layne no Chains". This is so disrespectful for his work and they can't accept the fact Cantrell is the soul of the band. Not to mention his solo stuff, which speaks a lot and not everyone knows. So for me yes, underrated.

@Arthur True. They’re new stuff is actually good but when you’ve had THE Layne as your lead singer in the band nothing can come close. But I think if Duval had always been the lead singer then people would love their new stuff.

Probably one of my favorite interviews. I have a newfound love and admiration for aic and Jerry Cantrell ❤. The story of his life is amazing and his resilience , calm, and optimism when faced with all these obstacles is remarkable. I so wish I would have paid more attention to this band in my early teens, when the original members were all intact. Happy Jerry, Sean, and Mike I still write and tour.

Cantrell is the David Gilmore of the grunge era. His ability to get the most out of each note..to make you feel each note, to not burden the ear with superfluous filler.... Gilmore and Cantrell are very similar in this regard... maybe that's why they are 2 of my top 5 favorite guitar players.

Definitely agree. I’ve teared up on three guitar notes or riffs/solos that I can recall in my life. Jerry’s solo on whale and wasps, Gilmores on mother and pages riff on ten years gone.

Jerry is a quintessential renaissance man. He said the music he’s makes in Alice belongs to anyone who listens to it, too. In all my life there are no other songs I have so deeply felt, lived and carry on with more than from Alice In Chains - thier music/videos take me back, move me forward and rock it back again. I’m with you guys til the end.

Shawn Patricio We’ve were young during a time music was changing. The emotion. I’ve never read words like that before. Lyrics that hit that hard. Backed by riffs made my hair stand and my skin crawl. I was young at the right time. The time when Alice In Chains and Soundgarden change music forever. I rock them when need to connect with those time. To remember when I was so young and free. Cursed and broken. Today, I am because I never gave up on that lifestyle: Love Hate Love, Brother! Thanks for writing, Shawn!

@ 10:45 mark -- I really hope Jerry knows that this is how WE feel about his music. It goes far beyond our regular abilities to express, and can hit a person extremely hard, in good ways and bad. AIC is very important to me.

Props to this documentary. It told Jerry's compelling story for anyone who really loves this band. It doesn't ignore the very often (sometimes unfairly) overshadowing that is Layne, it gives a fresh look into the other member(s) of Alice In Chains. Take a moment to think about this. If it was Cantrell that had died, how much of an impact would that have made to the soul of the band as well?
