Col. Henry S. McComb founded the Illinois Central Railroad Car Repair Shops a hundred miles north of New Orleans in 1872, and in the process, the city of McComb City, Mississippi was born. These historic images were taken throughout the Shops' existence, and illustrate the size and scope of this industrial complex, which was comprised of 64 acres. The Shops were officially closed in 1987. Today, the cherished memories of the Railroad Shops live on in the award winning McComb City Railroad Depot Museum, located inside the Depot in downtown McComb, as well as in the form of an outdoor display of a steam locomotive and antique rail cars adjacent to the Depot.
