Col. Henry S. McComb founded the Illinois Central Railroad Car Repair Shops a hundred miles north of New Orleans in 1872, and in the process, the city of McComb City, Mississippi was born. These historic images were taken throughout the Shops' existence, and illustrate the size and scope of this industrial complex, which was comprised of 64 acres. The Shops were officially closed in 1987. Today, the cherished memories of the Railroad Shops live on in the award winning McComb City Railroad Depot Museum, located inside the Depot in downtown McComb, as well as in the form of an outdoor display of a steam locomotive and antique rail cars adjacent to the Depot.

Thank you! That had to be one of the coolest videos I have ever seen. I live only a couple miles from where the pictures were taken and I spent many many hours in the area exploring when I was a kid. I remember some of the places that I saw in the video but it was nothing like this. I didn’t know just how big it was until now. I knew that it was a railroad town and how the railroad was the reason for my hometown but I didn’t know the scale of the operation until now

Thank you for this. I grew up playing on the tracks near downtown McComb. I recently found out my great grandfather worked as a locomotive fireman in the 20's - sometime pass the 1940's. I remember playing on the train at Edgewood park. I was a little big by the time they moved it to downtown. Can't wait to bring my boy down there for Train Day.

Just ran across this video. My grandfather worked in that ICRR yard, pretty sure he worked in one of the shops. His name was Jefferson Leon Jacobs, was known as Leon or "Lon". The family lived at 525 21st St., pretty big family. I was also born in McComb, but, my parents moved to Summit briefly and then to Wesson when I was little. Pretty much know that downtown area like the back of my hand and it makes me sick to see the whole town deteriorating. Before they built that barrier around the old engine, my Dad and I were able to get up inside the cab of that monster! Took a real man to drive that thing! Thanks for posting!

The movie footage at 4:28 to 5:11 and from 6:00 to 6:44 are from a DVD we produced titled "Mid-American Glory ICRR". The original 16mm film was shot by C. W. Witbeck . There is much more of this footage in the DVD which is available from Herron Rail Video. It is item no. 018 in our catalog.
