Idaho's Historic Earthquakes- The Borah Peak Quake The Borah Peak earthquake is the largest ever recorded in Idaho - both in terms of magnitude and in the amount of property damage. It caused two deaths in Challis, about 200 km northeast of Boise, and an estimated $12.5 million in damage in the Challis-Mackay area

A) It's "Mt. Borah", B) those picnic tables were not there at the time of the quake, that site has been improved and developed over the years into a tourist spot C) two children were killed by the quake while walking to school when bricks from a building fell on them. Great drone footage! Thank you for adding some Idaho flavor to your adventures.

I had just got to a construction site 60 miles from the epicenter, in the morning when that earthquake hit. It sloshed water out of a creek there, and it took almost an hour for the water to run again. Almost knocked me off my feet.

The water associated with the fault act as a tectonic lubricant. Less water in more tectonically stressed regions makes more violent quakes. A well watered fault means more quakes, but lower level quakes.

I actually experienced the earthquake. I was 11 years old. My siblings and I were waiting for the school bus around 7:30 am in Salmon Idaho. The trees started shaking and then I saw a wave rolling up the road toward us and then past us. It was crazy!

This shook us up pretty good in Missoula. I came down a few months later and all they had was the road rebuilt across the fault line. In Challis itself a storefront facade fell on two little girls fleeing from inside the store. Only fatalities related to the quake.

A few miles west of this location, northwest of Stanley, ID, a 6.5 magnitude quake shook up the region in April of 2020. The Borah Peak quake killed 2 young schoolgirls when a brick wall fell on them as they were on their way to school.

Great video. Just a few minutes prior to writing this Idaho experienced a 6.2 magnitude earthquake with the epicenter some where near this region, maybe closer to Stanley. Interestingly enough, I was up in the Salmon/Challis/Mackay area this same week, and did some water sampling down at the campground you were at. I was always amazed with the geography, weather, and history of this forgotten area and I’m glad it interests you as well.

Wow! I loved this video! The fault line was amazing!! Isn’t it true that when the techtonic plates slide under each other, it causes the quake? So interesting!! Scenery great, especially the highway through those beautiful rocks!! And, you KNOW we love the drone footage! I’ve put the campsite on my list of stops!! 🐾❤️🐾

I was in Wisdom, MT when that quake occurred. You could see the ground undulating like ocean swells as the shock waves traveled out from the epicenter and into the big hole valley. It was a trip because I saw it coming 3 to 4 seconds before I felt it...not enough time for my brain to process what I was seeing. The two deaths in Challis were two little kids walking to school when a building facade fell on them.

I'll have to go look at this fault scarp; it compares with the scarp left by the Lone Pine earthquake in 1872. The Owens Valley is so dry there's been almost no appreciable erosion of the escarpment, which runs for about 50 miles up the valley. At places the combined drop-rise of the Sierra Block and Owens Valley block measures 20 ft, with a lateral displacement of up to _40 ft!_ The magnitude of that quake is estimated to be around 8.0. The Borah Peak escarpment is so new that it's very well-preserved and so I'd like to see it up close.

Thank you for sharing! That was an awesome video. Made me think about the Lost Dutchman mine. Have you ever filmed a sequence on it? I don't think it is anywhere near Idaho, but that would make a wonderful conclusion on returning to your home base. There are 3 stories, Two are centered in Arizona. If you decide to do one... take your pick. There are other variants that could keep you busy videoing for years. Love this road trip. ❤👌👍😊..
