Watching this, you can see why, historically, smiths were revered as magicians. The shoe itself is a work of art and the process of making it is mesmerising. I really am in awe of the knowledge and skills of the farrier. I know next to nothing about horses . . . but I'm learning fast! Incredible work.

@@neeadevil4840 In Nigeria, home to some of the earliest iron working cultures on the planet, blacksmiths assumed a great deal of spiritual and political importance that continues into the modern era. Working with iron in particular is very difficult, and a population was quite dependent on a small population of smiths to make tools and weapons alike.

@@narellemacpherson9759 No better comment. Add to that these facts: 1)Hearing protection is cheaper than hearing aids. 2) Better hearing will result in fewer falls as you age. Thanks for the heads up. Best to you and yours.

With regards protecting hearing, that’s a good idea but I suspect the smiths at least use the sound from the ‘banging’ as feedback when creating items.

I don't think most people have a clue how much skill and craftsmanship is needed to make specialized horseshoes from scratch. Add in the fact that the draft horse, who was easily over 1000 pounds, was constantly pulling his hoof away- mad respect.

That was the most amazing piece of craftsmanship I've ever witnessed. What a Masterpiece! I've watched so many different videos of ppl shoeing horses, but this just made me truly appreciate the quality of someone who knows exactly what they are doing. My grandfather was a blacksmith but he died when I was only 7 and I only got to witness his work first hand once. So appreciate all the care these ppl take in doing their trade. Kudos to all of you!!

One my other favorite farrier channels talked about why he hand makes shoes a lot, too. He said that it gives him the ability to support the horses in ways that premade shoes sometimes can’t. He also said that he prefers to stock the unmolded bars rather than lug around all of the specialty premade shoes in any size that he might need. That made a lot of sense to me and I think it’s great that you encourage your students to learn it, even if they choose mostly premade shoes in their careers.

not all of them. I have a Jazz horse who's impossible to shoe. Thankfully he doesn't need it, he has very good hooves naturally. But when I decided to take the shoes off, we had to sedate him as he was willing to fight us over it. It was because his feet hurt badly, he'd been shod wrong. Now he knows that trimming doesn't hurt and it helps him so he's a very good boy now. Well aside from throwing everything he can find, that is.

I loved the way the horse stood with his foot on the foot rest - so dainty for a gentle giant. The black smith's skills is mesmorizing and amazing. The owner of the horse does not deserve such a beautiful animal to be so neglected.
