It's to guide the donkey where to go while giving the human the ability to say well back from any possible kicks. Donkeys, like small children, are liable to lash out when scared, stressed, or in pain, all of which apply to a restorative hoof trimming. The difference is that a donkey lashing out can land you in the hospital or worse. So using a whip is safer for all involved.

Yes, the limb pruner seems to be out of place for most all of this work. A battery or a.c. powered oscillating tool would be kinder to worker and animal. The donkeys are so humble, what gentle souls they are. I've not heard much comfort in tone with the language to calm and give the donkeys some reassurance - they scold instead, at least to my ears.

It will hurt from the infection that was in it. The red you see on the hoof is not bleeding. It’s part of the infection. The donkey’s foot will be tender for a while, but given time, will get better. I watch the American farriers and he explained the red on the hoof and that the horse wasn’t bleeding, but to get the hoof straight it would be a little sore for a while.
