With all in the news about Idalia, what is the fate of seniors including us who rely on their home equity for financial stability and might have faced some challenges if their homes were affected. Ian was bad not to us, but we were impacted this time and to a large extent. Now we can relocate, lol.
@bukki07

My heart goes out to you. I can imagine the stress you might be under, Was you home damaged or did you have to evacuate? Financial situations could turn ugly and make seniors quite vulnerable.
@addisonwillow1055
@addisonwillow1055 10 ай бұрын
Absolutely, even if their homes weren't directly hit, the economic fallout from the hurricane could have ripple effects on property values, which could impact their home equity.

I also wonder if insurance coverage plays a role here. Seniors like you who were affected might rely on insurance to cover repairs, but the extent of coverage could vary and potentially impact their ability to tap into their home equity.

Also the emotional toll of dealing with a natural disaster like this could impact other seniors' decision-making. They might be hesitant to make major financial decisions, including leveraging their home equity.

It's a complex situation, and it really emphasizes the importance of disaster preparedness and having a comprehensive financial plan that takes potential natural disasters into account. and professional guidance could be enlisted.

The issue is one of complacency, misunderstanding, and well intentioned misinformation. Most graphics for hurricanes air on the side of caution, claiming the worst case scenario to be what will happen and not acknowledging that there will be variance on it. That feeds into the misunderstanding of the public, not understanding that it can vary wildly depending on where exactly you are when it hits. And that misunderstanding feeds into the complacency that causes issues like these people needing rescue and not leaving their homes. To their understanding, one cat 3 hurricane is the same as the next, but in reality it can be a whole different storm depending on your location the time it hits, etc.

Give me a break! I live in Colorado and I hear about the shelters located in Florida and the evacuation orders. And if you are that poor, what are looters going to loot, and in the middle of a hurricane, really? They just think if they pray hard enough, Jesus will save them or, more likely, the emergency responders paid by the government they disparage the rest of the year. My advice, get out of Florida.

Last week I hydroplaned about a mile from my house-it was one of the scariest experiences of my life and now I know to be extremely cautious of flooding and if there’s even a chance, I don’t go out. I guess my point is it’s not just deep waters you have to worry about during flooding, if your car is forced up off the ground it in the water you have zero control. It’s awful. And I used to live in Michigan. where black ice was a threat in winter. I thought nothing could be worse but now I know better.I’m a cautionary tale y’all 😳😳😬🙄😎

It isn't a matter if caring. It is a matter of the law. Insurance is heavily regulated. Insurance isn't a charity. Legitimate claims get paid. Insured people will get claims paid. People that cut corners on their insurance to save premiums, well they get what they pay for. Again, Insurance isn't a charity. Support a taxpayer program in at risk states if you don't want to pay a premium that covers the costs of claims.

This is why I select trees that grow lower to the ground and prune them to make sure they grow more horizontally than vertically. Most other people here have the trees all pruned to “raise the canopy” far above buildings which makes no sense because the trees are far more likely to fall completely on your house if they tower above it.

Can do better if didn't have to rescue people if they left in the first place. ALL hurricanes are dangerous. Comparing one to another never makes sense. Be safe all.

thats normal in the tropics. Hurricanes are strong natural monsters. Im a Miami resident since the date of my birth. I have witnessed and impacted by direct eye landfalls and brushes of various hurricanes or tropical storms like katrina, irma, wilma, nicole, and many others. florida in on average the most struck state of the country. even without global warming or climate change, tropical cyclones are indeed monstrous mother nature phenomenon. My prayers go to the victims family and friends in cedar key and elsewhere in idalia's path. hurricanes are no joke and it does not discriminate anyone of all sizes, ages, heights and backgrounds. I lost one of my 3rd cousins from irma. Please dont let your guard down.

To be honest, it’s really annoying that some of these people have to be rescued because they could have evacuated but they didn’t. No one should have stayed voluntarily, and if they did, the government should tell them, “you’re on your own.” And anyone who wanted to evacuate but could not by their own means, should have been safely rescued before the storm and brought with their pets to a safe shelter. Amazing how people think it’s only going to be some excess water, forgetting about wind, projectiles, fallen trees, fires, electrocutions, sink holes, and all kinds of unforeseeable outcomes.

These happen regularly. Don’t blame them for not taken them seriously, a hurricane in Florida is as common as a bad thunderstorm in other states. Besides the hurricane was predicted to go lower down to Orlando yesterday they probably weren’t ready
