The pulleys roll along with the diamond bead impregnated wire. They roll at the same speed as the wire, so there is very little friction between them. Some designs also have rubber strips that line the pulleys to act as a buffer between the diamond wire and the pulleys themselves. The reason it cuts the rocks is because the rock is stationary. If the rock were spinning in the same direction at the same speed of the diamond wire, it wouldn't make a cut. It's all about the friction.

Most other diamond wire saws are stationary. The bigger the idler pulleys, the less stress there is on the bearings. Smaller pulleys just means more stress on the bearings, and you will have to replace them a little more often.

This was one of the first machines cost around $30k they are now $50k and way improved from this example

An assload, be prepared to pull your shorts down, bend over and take it dry.
