Gentleman Quiz: gentl.mn/3min-gentsgazette-qu...
00:00 Ideal Watches Introduction
It should come as no surprise that wristwatches come in all shapes, sizes, and prices! There’s no denying that it can be difficult to navigate the watch world, especially in the 21st Century, when there’s a greater focus on a timepiece having a particular gimmick just for the sake of being different.
As a Gentleman’s Gazette viewer, chances are you agree that a wristwatch should be functional and look good, but so many watches are sold like cars: by which I mean there’s a focus on the intricate specs and details.
01:25 Our 5 "Gentleman" Archetypes
If you’re an avid follower of the Gentleman’s Gazette, chances are you’ve already seen our specially devised Gentleman’s Quiz. Taking part in the quiz is a really fun way to get a better understanding of where you are in your journey on the gentleman’s path. And will result in a tailor-made list of suggested articles and videos we’ve produced just for you.
02:43 1a. Dandy Gent: Monsieur BOVET
03:28 1b. Dandy Gent: Seiko Presage Cocktail

→ Size matters!
→ Straps are invaluable
→ You don’t have to spend a lot to look good
Let us know in the comments what you think of our suggestions. Did we pick the right watch for you? And what would you suggest for each of the categories?

One thing I really enjoy is matching my watch to my shoes. However since I don’t have a large watch collection, what I do is instead I have different bands for my appall watch. They are easy to change out and come in a large variety of colors, styles, and materials. And since it’s only the bands, they are much more affordable then multiple watches

I am glad that GG is giving food for thought on this subject. I find that far too many gentlemen are going immediately to a dive watch to pair with their suit simply because a popular literary/film British spy does so. Maybe a follow up video on how to avoid pitfalls when purchasing vintage watches would be great.

I own a single watch that I use everyday. It is a Omega Seamaster 600 from 1964. I take care of it (replace the crystal and crown when needed and get it serviced every 5-7 years) and wear it with almost everything. By todays standart it is a small watch (32,5 mm) but is suits my slender wrist. It is also a manual wind so every morning it needs a wind up, but I love that part and I feel more connected with my watch because of it.

I'm polish, I couldn't figure out what You're saying at the and, I had to check subtitles for "Poszetka" (which means pocket square btw) - but don't sweat it, our pronunciation is one of the hardest in the world, so getting it right in a video, a stream or a speech is really for those who like to flex their polyglocy skills.

Casio, Casio, Casio. Whether it's €30 or €150, Casio has an option from digital to analog and everything in-between. The one they show in the video is the A168; I have a more modern (but still retro) A700. Both can be had for less than €50, and with the heritage Casio has in digital watches, no true watch enthusiast can deny that these are real watches worth owning. As for quartz analog watches, any Casio I've handled the seconds hand hit all the markers better than any Swiss quartz watch I've seen that didn't cost thousands.

I'm what you call a "mix and match" type, I'm mostly classic but I like to deliberately break the archetype with a couple things in my day to day outfits (like wearing colorful shirts, or even occasionally mix a bit of tactical gear in ) my go to watch is a Seiko Prospex on a NATO strap (I have a presage as well but I don't like wearing them unless it's formal, still trying to figure out which one to get for the "expensive watch", H Moser Pioneer is probably my dream watch)

Some ambitious choices mixed in with the practical (PRX, Orient, Nomos). That VC Historiques 1921 needs to be seen in person - I wanted one until I tried it on - way too big I felt. you will save up to 10,000 by buying pre-owned it should be mentioned. The Bovet is simply gorgeous so kudos for featuring it. refreshing to see a dress watch video that didn't go on about Cartier also! As an eastern european for a daily driver I either run a soviet hand wound Победа from 1980s, or a yugo Raketa from the 1970s... they were worker's watches with leather straps and generaly easy to read and indestructible. As for fancy ocasions it's either a silver pocketwatch or a seiko 5 from the 1990s for more buisness formal events.

I find it very difficult to get hold of a classic looking dress watch (gold color, simple dial etc) in a classic size (~36mm) for below $1000. Only option for a new one seems to be the Orient Bambino 36mm. But it seems almost impossible to get hold of, haven't really found any dealer that has it in stock worldwide. Thinking of getting the 38mm variant of it, even though it is a bit large. At least smaller than all the oversized 40mm+ watches that are the norm nowadays.

Only very few of us do dive but dive watches aren't just for divers. Keep in mind that almost noone who wears the moon watch actually went to the moon. And not everyone who wears gentleman style things like cufflinks or dress watches is in fact a gentleman. The times when watches were actual tools are over. During my first dives I had my Omega SMP Bond on my wrist and I quickly felt like a dinosaur since almost every other fella had a diver computer in use. Nevertheless dive watches have a lot of things going for them. First and foremost they are built to last. They can withstand harsher conditions easier than dress watches. You do not have to be concerned about it when it's rainy or when you wash your hands. In fact my morning shower is my dive watches morning shower so I do not have to put more effort into cleaning it. Dive watches, at least some of them, look great and can easily combined with a suit but of course go extremely well with casual attire. Just last week I received my fathers Planet Ocean (1st gen., 42mm in black) back from service and it felt like a new watch. You can wear this watch with everything and the same is valid for the Submariner of course. This versatiliy combined with practicality makes dive watches so popular. It does not have to be such an expensive watch but if you want to spend some money on one really good watch these timepieces fit the bill.

Maybe someone can help me with this. I have an 1860’s Elgin pocket watch that’s a family heirloom, which I would never wear because 1) pocket watches aren’t my thing, and 2) I don’t want to risk damaging it. I also wear an Apple Watch on days where I’m not dressed up. Whenever I put on a suit or something more formal, I simply don’t wear a watch. I’m not a “watch guy,” but people keep indicating that my lack of a watch is some kind of missing essential. I’d like to get a simple Tank or JLC-type watch, but I honestly can’t afford either of them. Is there an entry-level dress watch that connotes that I know what I’m doing, but isn’t such a crazy investment from someone who honestly doesn’t care at all about watches?
@gentlemansgazette

@@gentlemansgazette thanks, but is that going to read as “cheap” to people who care about watches? Is there such a thing as “tasteful entry-level” in watches, or is it that you need to spend 4-digits before you aren’t eye-rolled at?
@osochara
@osochara Жыл бұрын
You’re getting it wrong. People who really care about watches know there’s more to them than price. If people roll their eyes at you for what you can or can’t afford, they might not be the type of people you want to associate with anyway. Anyways, in terms of options, some Seiko tanks might work for you, although you may find more options looking for vintage tank-style watches from legacy brands for less than 1k, possibly less than $500 in some cases.

So, by definition, I admit that my everyday watch is not correct......except.....it is. What?!? Let me explain. Following the GG style assessment, I am very much a vintage gentleman. My daily dress is suit or sport coat, necktie, hat and gloves. Clearly 1920s to 1950s business and social attire. So, my wristwatch.....a brass-cased Vario 1918 Medic. This is a tribute WW1 trench watch, not a dress watch. Nonetheless, it "works", and I am constantly complimented on my "restored antique wristwatch", which is likely how I get away with it.
