A simple no math method to determine whether a beam / member within a truss is under tension or compression.
I showed the forces BY the members ON the joints. I know this is not the convention many people follow, but I find it more natural when apply Newton's Second Law to joints when working the Method of Joints to analyze a truss.

I like this intuitive approach much better than the "assume all members are under compression/tension and let the math update your assumptions" approach. Using intuition to establish the state of each member beforehand, just makes the math that slightly bit more obvious IMO. (Although, I do prefer doing this one joint at a time, rather than all members in advance.) And sure, if somehow your intuition was wrong - the math is still there to correct you.

I never liked the 'guess and check through math' method either. It's too easy for one mistake to snowball through an entire truss solution.

This is a much better method than I learnt. What I was taught was to just imagine the single segment of the truss and then find out all the forces on either end of it. Next, I had to calculate the sum force on either end and see if the 2 forces were going in the same direction or opposite direction. Using that, we could determine if the segment was under tension or compression.

Much more tedious, especially in a time crunch scenario like a test

@@lifequotient Surprisingly, it actually worked well during the test. Of course the method in the video is less time consuming .

Hands down the best explanation I've seen so far I was really wondering how a member can be under tension, and i couldn't understand it until i watched your video, thx

Could you do a video on concrete piles, specifically in the marine industry. Not only do you have forces working on the pile "downward" depending on what is built on top of the pile, say bridge, bulkhead, or breakwater. But what about the water forces (ocean, bay, river or lake) these forces are both pulling and pushing on the pile. Love the video just want to see it in a different way than your standard "truss". Thanks!

Isnt a tension pushing

tension occurs when a member pulls. ie a rope can act in tension but not compression.
