Identifying and changing your Xbox One Series X/S controllers front shell

Yes I know there are also the 2 elite controllers, but you should know if you have those. The other 4 look very similar.
All Xbox controllers front shell are changed the same way. Just not every front shell is the same.

They're decently cheap, even better to buy a multi set. Annoying it's necessary, should all be Phillips if you ask me. LoL

@TSC Pysoツ I mean, sure... But you run a high probability of ruining your controller. It's better to get the tool for a few dollars than to ruin an $80 controller... I purchased a shell replacement that came with a driver, so there's also that.

If you are looking for a screwdriver, walmart sells it, just grabbed a "smartphone repair kit" and it comes with the T8 bit

CR-V T8 screw is what I used and it worked perfect from Walmart

You can use a flat screwdriver but I've always used a plastic pry tool.

The seam between my controller seems a lot tighter than yours. You effortlessly popped it off whereas I'm worried I'm going to apply too much force

I need an extra tutorial on exactly how to change all of the buttons (arrows, A,B,X,Y, RT, RB, LT, LB, home, BT pairing button, etc.) I did the same for my old xbox one controller but the X/S controller seems slightly different.

I'm assuming you mean the Series controller, there is no such thing as an X/S controller. ("X/S" is in the title because people don't know what to search for, it helps it pop up in search results) It's is slightly different but it's actually easier, a few less screws. The 2 things that changed, one less screw on each trigger and how the sync button stays in place, other than that it's the same.

Removed the back sides you know behind the triggers on Xbox controller Can't be done on the series s White pad . Been trying ages.

I've done it several times on the white controllers, but the color doesn't matter, they all come apart the same. However the Elite controllers are different.

I don't know what type of screw it is, but just search eBay and you'll find lots of listings for the screws.

You can, as long as you're good with cutters or a dremel and probably a drill. The differences are very easy to spot.

That does happen, I break them every so often, they only last so long. That's why it's best know what controller you have and order the correct shell. This is what happens when Microsoft makes 6 different controllers, 4 regular and 2 elite, with 5 different front shells.

You're going to need a lot more than a screwdriver to fix a drifting joystick. You'll need: solder, soldering iron, a way to desolder it and a new module. Along with 1, maybe 2 different screwdrivers.

@@mikeeyram hey man, thanks a lot for your extremely helpful comment. the thing is it’s a new controller and a new console that I got for Christmas and the thing is it only started acting up when I cleaned a little bit of the grime out of the wedges in my controller and a piece of that slipped into the joystick, and then it started messing up

That means it's already been taken apart and that screw was never put back in.

if it is a brand new controller, make sure the back is not a sticker I thought the exact same thing until I just looked at mine really closely and realize there is a fifth screw hole. The sticker was just in the way.

Any controller will have a sticker, unless the shell has already been changed. Microsoft has been putting a screw under a sticker since 2005, when the 360 released. So it's nothing new.

If anyone in the comments is as slow (idiotic) as me, the back-center screw is hidden where the battery compartment is. You need to press into that area (where the center screw is) with the screwdriver and the sticker will tear slightly, which will let you access that screw! Don't be scared to do it, it's easy and necessary to get that screw out, or else you can't install the faceplate. It took me over an hour to gain the courage, my first time doing it.

I mean what I said. If the top of the module broke, you'd need to replace the module so you can put the top of the joystick on.

By changing a plastic shell you made your controller not turn on, interesting. I'd check to make sure the batteries are the correct orientation.
