This video gives a detailed overview of the various components of service chambers and spring brakes. We identify long stroke, standard stoke, and different chamber types. We also talk about how they work as well as how to replace piggyback assemblies.

It's nice that air brake chambers are universal and follow a standard size and type. Wish there was a standard such as this (and on U-joints) in the auto industry.

I just started heavy diesel a little over 3 months ago. Its a dead beat shop with even more lethargic management 😤 I've learned more in this 5 min video than I did within weeks of working there! Needless to say I'm gonna quit and find a better place to learn/work @

Thank you for your information. Let me know how much air pressure required to release the parking brake. how much air pressure it maintains in chamber.

At least 60 psi is required to release the parking brake in a 30/30 type spring brake. The brake chamber will see full supply air pressure when the truck is running and the brakes are released so it could maintain up to 120psi against the parking spring.

Great video ! Thanks ! But i want ti know what happens if you put a 30/30 long stroke chambers in place of short Ones ? The brake service is stronger? You wil get a better capability of brake ?

It doesn’t have a difference in strength. The short and long stroke both have different travel distances. So if you try a different chamber you will have very bad issues with your brakes.

My service breaks work but parking breaks don't hold in the truck but in the trailer it does but the yellow know comes out but the truck can still move but I had some oil leak from the differential and I changed the differential but the parking breaks on the truck doesn't seem to work properly

How did you determine that the short stroke was a 3030? You showed the marking on the long stroke spring brake chamber but you didn't show a 3030 marking on the short stroke. I'm trying to identify one on my motor home but I cannot see any markings except on the end and it has style 30.

Since 30/30 short stroke chambers are so common they typically lack markings. The best way to identify is by measuring the diameter. Both sections should be the same diameter at around 8" and round air port bosses. If it is a spring break and says "Style 30" it will most likely be a 30/30. However, It is always best to measure and confirm.

When air leaks out of the tiny hole on the side of the chambers rear portion does that indicate the brake can is no good? Because their are tiny holes in the front where it mounts to the truck and also the back portion on its sides

Air leakage from a brake chamber is usually due to a bad rubber diaphragm. The spring brake section would need to be changed as an assembly to replace its diaphragm and the service brake diaphragm can be changed when the chamber is apart. Alternatively you could change the entire chamber if it is older and could use a refresh.

What is the possible cause why airbrakes failed?..if the brakes has emergency brakes or service brakes that automatically lock up the wheels? I know that almost airbrake the trucks use is maxi brakes,which have service brake and spring brakes.

I change brake Chambers constantly mad slacks and a bunch of crap. I want to know because I work for a bunch of different opinions if you know what I mean. Big question does my yoke arm length have to be the same on both sides of a single axle...... example I release my brakes and I measure from chamber to center of clevis pin.....left side 2 and quarter. Right side 3. Both Chambers are good. Now I know this is a way to identify mismatched chambers but this is the main question does it always mean that one of them is the wrong chamber. I changed one this morning I put 3431954 on axle 3 on a Mack rolloff truck. That's what they are for and the other chamber is the original factory chamber......they are different lengths. Wtf.

Make sure you cut the push rod properly. When brakes are adjusted, push rod and center line of slack adjuster (from the clevis pin to the center of Scam shaft) need to form 90 degree.

I replace 2 spring brake chambers every month on my side tipper trailer. Does anyone else experience this problem or can it be resolved.

Depending on how the chambers are failing will determine the actions taken to try to extend their life. It is not common to replace brake chambers that often.

I just bought my first truck. So now I am learning how to service / repair my baby. So how to tell if o ring is leaking between chamber's?? If air is leaking out caging bolt hole, I need a piggy back fix. If leaking out push rod hole, maybe a diagram replacement is fix? So why a long stroke model necessary? Why not all chambers a double parking & service for increased safety on tractor??? Mine is notI will keep this in mind when parking on grades! Thank for video. If the o-ring at the center of the chamber has failed air would be shared between the chambers. This may result in the brake applying when the parking brake is released as the air leaks from the parking side to the service side, it may also result in a dragging brake as air slowly leaks into the service chamber side. Long stoke chambers allow for additional travel that can help ensure that brakes are fully released after application or they add an extra safety margin for brakes that are getting hot and may fade due to an expanding drum.The extra travel capability of a long stroke can help compensate for changes in the braking system that happen naturally while in use. Typically all non-steering axles on modern trucks and trailers will now have spring brake chambers. On older models this was not the case and some old trailers may not even have a single spring brake chamber. You will never want a spring brake on a steer axle because in a situation where supply air pressure is lost it would have side effect of locking the brakes on the steer axle as well as the drives causing you to loose control.

Why would an engineer use a 24/30 chamber and not a 30/30 or a 24/24. Would there be a mechanical advantage to this setup?

Using a 24/30 instead of a 30/30 or 24/24 could be due to brake balancing issues. If a lighter service brake application is desired to prevent lockup but the engineers still want the maximum spring pressure for emergency and parking applications a 24/30 will be used.

@@SBalaSBala-gy1tb 24/30 is referring to the size of the diaphragms. 24 Square inches on the service side and 30 square inches on the emergency/parking side. This allows for the correct brake balance during normal application and the larger parking brake spring for holding the vehicle in place.

When I started we changed the spring brake diaphragm and didn't think anything about it. 😲🤣 Now they put warning labels on it. You'd have a lot fewer stupid people if you took the labels off.
