In this video, Chad is out doing some post season scouting on a private piece of ground in North East Ohio. The goal is to hopefully identify some bedding areas to get a bigger picture of how the deer are using this area.
Our bedding beliefs go along with those of Jeff Sturgis, where the first bedding area nearest the primary food will be the dominant doe family group, as you work further back you will find other doe family groups, and the furthest bedding opportunities will be buck bedding. However, that bedding structure changes throughout the season.
When we go into a bedding area we are treating it like a crime scene. We are looking for ever possible clue we can find. Hair, scat, tracks, and rubs, In the few examples here we identified some smaller rubs close to the bigger beds. We believe these to be yearling or two year old bucks.
Some basic ways to identify doe bedding vs buck bedding are one, size. Buck beds are typically larger than doe beds. This may seem obvious, but some times it can be tricky if you're looking at.a young buck and a mature doe. The next identifier could be beds close in proximity. Typically does will bed in groups, and bucks will bed away from other deer. Especially mature bucks.
If at all possible, we suggest doing your post season scouting in the snow. Because of the snow we are able to start at the primary food and work our way backwards, tracking them back to their beds. The snow will also give you an idea of how new or old a bed is. If there is ice built up around the beds, it's likely they are older beds.

@@chadsyl23 I'm into Big Woods Public Land hunting here in PA. So anything in that realm works for me. But I'll watch it all. I have a Trek and a Lift 2 that I use year round. Love them.

The best tip I feel for others came at the end when you talked about how it shifts throughout the season , great point and needs to be pointed out as well that not all farms have buck bedding at all and some will have preferred early season bedding areas and others will have “rut beds” or late season preferred bedding areas , I hunt a lot of small farms in SE Ohio(door knocking machine) and I have farms I’ll specifically hunt during different times of year just solely based on buck beds and when there using them , so many variables go into it (to much to type on here lol) , thanks for all you guys do and what you represent for the industry !

Remember, in many cases bedding can constantly be changing. We eluded to that in the video but never actually said it.
