In this week's episode, we're sharing a conversation from a podcast we did with Perry Silvio Russo where we discussed how he kills so many big bucks with an east wind. Perry is a former QDMA regional director and lifetime MI, native. Perry has tagged some incredible Michigan bucks over the years.
This is one you won't want to miss!

Shot my last 2 buck over the last 2 years on east winds...in the evenings and they both came in directly down wind as my set up was for a west wind but I hunted anyway - actually hoping to wind bump them down to my wife at her stand; when all the doe came feeding through me from down wind and did not detect me, it hit me that my scent was never getting to the ground with the steady wind...and typically east winds are more steady and stronger where it keeps your scent higher above the deer and eliminates a lot of that thermal push down of your scent...

Glad this works for him where he’s hunting. I’ve killed mature bucks in Illinois on different wind directions, but some properties can’t be hunted on an east wind, or a north wind. Every property is different.

🦌Every property is vulnerable to be hunted on a east wind...every property is different but most hunters even big name hunters don't understand the east wind set up...Don Higgins (episode #83) on KZfaq with guest agreed east winds shouldn't be hunted....its a big mistake to think you will ruin an area or you don't or can't set up for a east wind set up...ive harvested many bucks on east wind set-ups...look at your property on a map and determine a eastwind opportunity....you have nothing to loose May the Magic of the Whitetail Forever Enrich Your Life

I'd say it's more 33%, 33%, 33% Yes right place right time, and a little luck...but you can increase your overall opportunities by scouting, scouting and scouting some more. When you see mature deer consistently on public land, and other guys are barely seeing g a doe....it means you are doing something right. Versus the guys who sit in a tree and hope something comes by, and hope you get an oppurtunity

To me the east wind thing is pretty simple. Generally an east wind is indicative that a front is going to be moving through. So personally I think that's the reason for successful hunts on an east wind, you'd be hunting some of the best weather days of the season.

I think it kind of goes back to Mark Drury on a wired to hunt podcast. Anytime you can get a series of winds then get a change. The change is best day whether its NSE or W. so get a a week of SW winds and changes to Any other direction equals good day to hunt. I think the East is such a complete change between normal winds its more pronounced to produce for ya.

OK. This is interesting to me from this perspective: I am in northeast Texas and the typical cold front produces a N-NE wind. So....I would think the atypical cold front wind FOR ME would be W-NNW-NW winds.... What do you guys think? Also, if that is the case, at least two of the locations I expect to ambush (from the E-NE edge of where I expect movement) mature bucks on public spots are best with W-NNW-NW winds. I hope that's the case. Duuuuuude...the 'inside corner' Russo is describing is exactly like one of the spots - just reverse on stand location and best wind direction. I like this guy and am making a note to listen to/watch the podcast featuring him. Good stuff as usual guys.

I have noticed over the years of bird-hunting and also coyote-hunting with hounds that an east wind is not worth hunting, for some reason a dogs sense-of-smell is greatly diminished during an east wind, i think it has to do with air pressure, fishing also is slow during an east wind, so it would be highly likely that a buck would have problems smelling also, . I remember getting onto my bird dog for flushing 3 coveys of quail in one afternoon, a veteran bird-hunter told me later it was because of the east wind, could this be a way to tip the odds on a mature whitetail buck ?????

Anyway what I do Is I kind of rate places I hunt ... I hunt a lit of spots and only 1 I'd call a 10 it's a rut spot and phenomenal but my other spots I rate based on various things but what I'll do is I'll go hunt my spots that I think I'm less likely to encounter a big buck but still have a chance... in other words idc if I mess the spot up . Then I'll save my good spots for evenings. It's definitely the way to go . Well worth the wait but sometimes hard to do

I'm sorry guys. As much as I respect y'all, what y'all do, and certainly the knowledge of this excellent hunter, I just can't find the logic in his argument. A deer in a "southwest corner" has no idea he's in a southwest corner. His location relative to N-S-E-W is immaterial and not a factor in his movement. In my preferred spots the worst possible wind is an East wind. Why? Because my only access is from the E-SE, and the bucks bed W-NW of me. The work days I skip are NW winds, preferably almost unbearably cold and windy. Those days the bucks tend to rise a little earlier in the afternoon to start foraging south through the thick stuff to the cut beans fields a mile away, which they seem to prefer to access just after dark. These strategies have to be very location specific. Thanks for the compelling video!

He’s not really elaborating well. I think what he’s trying to verbalize is that because mature bucks spend a larger percentage of their lives on a dominant W-NW wind, their bedding areas for those winds are well sniffed out and damn near bulletproof. They’ve mastered them so to speak. Now throw in an East (off) wind to a buck who’s trying to chase tail and feed, that’s a much more vulnerable animal. All being said, every bedding area has a weak spot. That’s up to the hunter to figure out. I don’t subscribe to this belief that you should only hunt, or wait for, an East wind. Cyber scout and put boots on your parcel or land you intend to hunt and identify the weak spot of that area. Some you may need an East wind, but most you will still be able to get it done on a predominant wind. Perfecting your access, thermal prediction, and tree location will put you on a nice buck on a less than perfect wind direction.
@chadbrantley839
@chadbrantley839 2 жыл бұрын
Absolutely. 100% agree. I believe there can be great advantages to what he is saying, but he isn't explaining himself well, and the point most people take away from watching this is going to be "I have to be in the woods on an east wind" when in reality, you stand location in relevance to that east wind, or any wind in general, is going to make all of the difference. Not to mention thermals of your specific area.

Waiting for that 10-15 degree temperature drop and not over pressuring before it happens is anyone's best bet. After a long rain or many day's of rain when the rain stops you better already be in the stand waiting as well. East winds are rare and can change a buck's direction and bedding pattern which can provide an opportunity as well. Idk what the ferk this guy is trying to say though. Word vomit. 🤮

So this guy's trophy closet has only three deer that are over 3 1/2 years old, several 2 1/2 year old deer. I'm not saying not to hunt an east wind I'm just saying I'm not going to buy what he is selling. I'm pretty sure I could kill a future 120 class on any wind direction. "East wind honey, gone to kill a 110 inch 2 1/2 8 point." What a joke.

You’re absolutely out of your mind.. where perry is hunting (right by me) every buck on his wall is a special animal, deer like that aren’t common at all over here, I’d be tickled to death to even see one like that regularly, in my whole neighborhood and surrounding state ground, maybe one a year that big, MAYBE.. and he kills two a year consistently, he’s doing something right..
