Sorry of you already mentioned this somewhere in the 10 or so hours of analysis but: If you think of it; before Ai's death, Aqua interacted with Ruby more as an equal with the only real control being preventing her from doing something stupid. After Ai's death, he took on the role as older brother a lot more, which is a position of power.

( Again great video 😀 as a Manga reader I wanted to add some of my observation to yours, about Aqua's goals in general ( No spoilers I promise!) The author is always giving us two possible interpretations of Aqua's character : the genuine side of him and the manipulative side. For the idol group : It is possible that Aqua had planned this all along... He had accepted Kana's invitation to go to the Karaoke to see with his own eyes if she can sing. You'd previously mentioned how amazingly he led Kana into confiding in him, and part of me believes he already knew all the answers she gave him, simply by watching the show, and his memories of her. I believe Aqua remembers Kana but didn't mention it, he knows she's a perfectionist (her crying when they were young) and that she's definetely not satisfied with the way things are going. Instead of telling her, "let me help you", he led her to ASK HIM for help. Later on, the way he introduced himself to Frill Siranui is very "Unjapanese" like. He didn't even mention his name, going on the assumption she would know him, AND knowing fully she did not know about Ruby, so that she would talk to her mom about idols auditions, and then him bringing the subject smoothly without making it obvious he had planned it all along. Now weather Aqua is helping Ruby, it could be that he really wants her to succeed, or he's using her as a part of his scheme and trying to raise her "value" as a pawn. For his actor career/revenge: The whole "I'll go with Sweet today" was both him attempting the second and shortest path that could lead him to Ai's killer (the other would be becoming a director but it would take a longer time) AND him genuinely enjoying acting and wanting to help Kana into making a great show.

About the thing you said about how Aqua's therapist must have sucked or the sessions were cut short. That's ont thing that pisses me off to no end, that SO MANY THERAPISTS SUCK, it's a travesty! At least in Poland, I can't even recommend people to go to therapy, because there are so few good therapists here! It's so sad to see a society that needs therapy so much that even the ones who should be giving it aren't ready to emphasize and listen to other people

A bit about bringing up Ai, there's a part that is linguistic and doesn't translate well, the word Ruby used as favorite was "oshi" meaning "push" and used for the context of someone you're a fan of, that's where the title of the story comes from, as they're the children (ko) of the oshi that Ai was, if there was a simple word in English for "person you admire the most" it wouldn't be surprising for Aqua to bring her up, not healthy but not surprising. Also I don't thing you can call it mommy kink when you loved them before they were your mom, there's a line where the fantastical can't be described with normal psychology.

I've started reading the manga recently and it's been really fun trying to do what you do for the later introduced characters, just overall paying attention to who they are and what might have made them this way

i genuinely hope that this does not come across as weird, but i am genuinely grateful i came across your videos. The psychological insight and value you provide as you analyze these wonderful stories is amazing. These videos are great in terms of personal growth because of the value they provide. For me personally, it also helped me in terms of my mental clarity because of how i struggle with a lack of focus and dissociation. Oh man, i love Kana as a character so much, i personally believe that her dynamic with Aqua is incredibly healthy and can be a great way for Aqua to learn how to deal with his problems and become a better individual. Kanas approach to acting also creates a fascinating contrast to the way the industry is portrayed here, i think with the experience she had with Aqua made her grew so much to the point of becoming qutie empathethic,which is very impressive.

When you think ED is predicting this show, in reality it's this show that predicts ED. (Just like the hour prediction in episode 1 and the spinning pen).

"The face of the maiden, who has fallen in love with the protagonist" I watched someone else's response and she blasted the production for the double-shadow Kana is casting in this shot. The anime is using that double-shadow to orient us. Kana is facing the two light sources. She's looking between the two light sources. Who is that between the two light sources? Aqua. Just as Aqua evoked real emotions in Melt, Kana is leaning into her fresh, real emotions for Aqua to portray "the face of the maiden, who has fallen in love with the protagonist".

I don't think Aqua has a mommy kink. Remember, Aqua/Garou never really gave a crap about idols. For him, Ai was a superimposition of Sarina. For him, he loved and admired Ai because she represented the hopes and dreams of Sarina. But he couldn't save Sarina. Later, he couldn't be there to deliver Ai's children. Finally, he couldn't protect/save Ai. For him, Ai is a failure spanning decades. Ai is Sarina and Sarina is Ai in his eyes. I wouldn't call that a mommy kink. But rather, he cared about Ai not because she was an idol but because she was what Sarina admired. So it makes sense that others don't interest them. They don't have that connection.

I wanted to say thank you for all your great content! Learning about all these aspects of psychology and characterisation more in depth has been extremely helpful (game writing and acting background myself, so this show is definitely a ride), and I've had a lot of fun applying the concepts in practice. I still remember seeing the thumbnail of that 5 hour first episode breakdown and penciling in time to sit down and watch. Every video has me tuned in start to finish!

No spoilers; clearing up misunderstandings: Kana’s love journey essentially started off as an obsession, to admiration, to now an infatuation with Aqua. Ion think theres anything inherently wrong with falling for someone you admire tho; and their dynamic ends up being something im really biting my nails and jumping in my seat for. Second, your “scratch my back, ill scratch yours” wizard moment isnt really a wizard moment, as they essentially said the same thing in Episode 1 by Director about how (at least Japan’s) the entertainment industry is about ‘Exchanging favors’. Aqua wanted Ai to get more jobs, so Aqua had to co star in the movie too, etc etc. This concept is a fundamental driving point in understanding Oshi no Ko’s story. Minami’s a pin up model, which just means shes a model for posters and magazines and whatnot; aka things that can get “pinned up” to walls. They do things like swimwear and attractive “girl” clothes for photoshoots; but no lingerie(at least, they shouldnt even in Japan) Shiranui Frill didnt say it to gloat; she just had to state her reason for being late because in Japan its rude to just say “whoops, sorry bout that” and just walk into the meeting/appointment/class without saying anything and 2, also because shes super famous, she has to let the teacher on the first day know that her being late was out of her control. Aqua isnt sexually attracted to Ai, but he does Stan her. Its like a little princess-loving girl meeting Cinderella for the first time type of love; except that little girl never grows up/never gets used to being in Cinderella’s presence. And no spoilers, but Aqua isnt looking for anyone specific to scout in the idol group. Just someone who looks like idol material and is willing to take the job(not to mention 12 is the legal working age in Japan).

Spoiler comment: Actually, Ruby "lives in the past" even more than Aqua. She acts as if she's forward looking simply b/c she doesn't know what Aqua knows. Aqua had more than a decade to process it in some way (definitely w/o a therapist or psychiatrist), but Ruby never has the chance to even think about it. In Ruby's previous life, she had a cancer at 4, stayed at the hospital w/o much socialization and died at 12. Aqua has been socialized and has empathy (my own bias - med students have too much empathy to begin with), but Ruby is a real child who doesn't know boundaries. When she possesses the star power, it scares the hell out of me. Aqua might have already suspected that Ruby is his patient back when they were babies, that's why he takes on such a caretaker role and being overly protective. Otherwise, it's too much PTSD for me to imagine :'( (In the manga, it's confirmed that Aqua has severe PTSD and unmanaged Panic Attacks. Poor boy. I hope he finds some peace and hope in the end.)
