The reason Brodeur was an excellent puck handler is because he played goalie and forward when he was young. He chose to be a goalie, and became one of the NHL's greatest players.

The trapezoid was always a bad idea. It actively punishes players for being good at the game. It also cuts down on poor goalies making bone headed passes and actually cuts scoring down. 🤔
@insertjokehere1485
@insertjokehere1485 Жыл бұрын
The reason for it is it’s hard to generate offence off a dumping in a puck with no trapzoid. You dump in for one of two reasons you are changing lines or you are trying to get past defenders at the blue line and set up in the offensive zone. It would definitely cut down scoring not being able to set up in the other teams end cause a goalie was able to pass to a forward after you dumped it. Much easier to hold a lead
@D-Fens_1632
@D-Fens_1632 7 ай бұрын
I'll listen to and consider pretty much any argument in favor of the trapezoid but I refuse to entertain the idea that everyone from that point forward should have to change because one guy was "too good" at handling the puck. My answer to that one is "then get better." If you put that aside I wouldn't care either way if it's there or not.

Brodeur was so good/goalies had an unfair advantage stick handling and puck carrying because they were exempt from physical contact. God's honest truth in a heartbeat I'd rescind all restrictions on where goalies can play the puck in exchange for letting players contact them when they're outside the crease.
@rinzzler366
@rinzzler366 Жыл бұрын
meet you half way, only if they're above the goal line outside the crease, behind the net should be free for them. And its dangerous to contact them behind the net regardless. Cuz boards and they're somewhat easy to knock over.
@LordBitememan
@LordBitememan Жыл бұрын
@@rinzzler366 that's fair enough and I think that was basically the mindset the league was in when they introduced the trapezoid. I also don't think this was all 100% about Brodeur and that other incidents had occurred within semi-recent memory for the league that caused them to really rethink the issue of just how badly a goalie could abuse their no-touch status on the ice. Patrick Roy skating the puck to center ice stands out here. Around the net, yeah, you're a goalie. Out past a certain point, though, you're not being a goalie anymore you're being a skater and you're abusing rules that were designed to protect you around the net.

another classic story about a player/team forcing a rule change was how the Canadiens in the 50's were so dominant in power plays that the NHL brought in the rule that said that if a player scores during a power play, the penalty ends the singular moment that apparently triggered the rule change was Jean Béliveau scoring a hat trick in 44 seconds during a power play

Thanks for the video. You forgot the 1956 rule change of the minor penalty ending when the opposing team scores. That was changed by the Montreal Canadiens ability to rout a team that got a penalty, and boy did they ever. "Montreal Canadiens general manager Frank Selke insisted the NHL rule change adopted on June 6, 1956 was to punish his team, whose only crime, he said, was having too much firepower for its opponents."

Also the Edmonton oilers rule: immediate substitutions on coincidental penalties. When Edmonton was 4 on 4 against ANY team it was an advantage for Edmonton. With their fast skating and constant passing, they outmaneuvered their opponents. Having Gretzky probably helped, too…lol.

The Brodeur rule should be stricken from the NHL rulebooks. Its a rule implemented literally to limit the talent of a player. Its not easy to play the puck as a goaltender. You are far more likely to fuck it up and cause a goal against your team than you are to make a great defensive play. Marty had an individual talent that was taken away by a rule change. Professional sports should not be in the business of limiting a players individual skill unless that skill would make play unsafe for other players.

there are plenty of those. you can even say carrying the puck in hand wouldnt be unsafe to anyone yet its not allowed. half of the rules are to just keep the game traditions and soul. thankfully it seems that dribbling with the puck is really hard so probably there wont be similar problems as with floorball where people just flail the stick all over. zegras could perhaps be another player that warrants new limits to prevent others from getting bright ideas

I'm definitely glad they got rid of touch-icing. I got knocked out as a kid playing hockey due to touch-icing. I was racing for the puck and just before getting to the boards, my opponent side-steps and stuck out their stick tripping me. I went full force, face first into the boards. Thankfully I had a cage on and didn't suffer any facial injuries. I was knocked out though. I hit the boards so hard that when I bounced off, my head was the furthest part from the boards. Needless to say, neither of us finished the game. No-touch icing is way safer and I'm glad it is now used.

That's brutal. And probably could have been a lot worse. That cage probably saved you a fortune in dental work, though if you played hockey you might have wound up spending a fortune anyway. At any rate, in retrospect it seems absurd that icing wasn't made safer decades earlier. It's probably a miracle people didn't die skating as hard as they could into a wall without a helmet for so many years.

The trapezoid was originally put in because of the goalies that couldn’t handle puck well as much as for brodeur. Goalies like Belfour used to go and eat puck on boards slowing game down because he knew no one could knock him off it.

so, i have a slight correction for the Paveslki sequence : he got crosschecked, not "clipped". a second player coming in incidentally basically slew footed him while he was falling, and that combined to the head first fall that caused the injury. since at the time, it wasn't reviewable, one of the refs had thought the cross check was to the head, leading to the 5 minute penalty. i probably would have made it 2 for cross checking and 2 on the second guy for tripping personally, but either way. Personally, i'm not entirely convinced that vegas would have held on regardless. I've been on teams where a teammate leaves the game with injury. You find strength you didn't know you have. And once one goal has been scored? open the floodgates. if the vegas coach had called a TO after the first goal, MAYBE that would have helped...? personally, my stance remains that vegas imploded and blamed it on the refs. not ENTIRELY without cause... but if you allow four goals in five minutes, even if it is on the penalty kill, there are other questions that need to be asked. like "when did our defense go on vacation" The Meyer one, there is an arguement that it was less a "i'm going to get the puck to my teammate" and more "ah, the puck's coming at my face, hit it!". having said that, the way the rules are phrased? i don't know that the potential lack of intent is relevant. sorta like a high stick. you may not have MEANT to hit the puck above the crossbar, but it still happened, and can stop play.

No touch icing was smart. Not only safer for players, but also speeds up the game, esp. limiting the delay of game aspect of icing abuse. Never knew pre-1930's hockey didn't allow forward passes!! Thanks for that info tidbit! Hand contact with the puck should be completely abolished. The latitude allowed has players obviously grabbing the puck with closed hands which is supposed to be illegal. Just abolish hand contact completely & no controversy or abuse would result.

Please do another craziest coincidence video. There was a crazy coincidence recently shared by the NHL and NBA. In this year's finals, the 2nd wild card seed Florida Panthers of the east lost to the 1st seed Vegas Golden Knights of the West in 5 games. Similarly, in the NBA the same year, the 8th seed (technically 2nd wild card) Miami Heat of the east, another south Florida sports team, made it to the NBA finals only to lose to the 1st seed Denver Nuggets of the west in 5 games. Not only that, but the Denver Nuggets went 16-4 in their run to the NBA championship, sharing the same record that last year's Colorado Avalanche, another Denver-based team who also happened to be the 1st seed in the west, had in their run to the Stanley Cup of 16-4. How crazy of a coincidence is this?

Wait, but didnt Eakins ^actually^ high-stick Jo-Pa? it just shouldnt have been a 5major... is that why the League apologised? The 'hand pass' now, looking back, makes it easy to call if, in open ice you _choose_ to favor your teammate over open ice, but when youre surrounded by opponents and you choose white ice instead of them, i dont think that's as bad as a "here ya go"-- you really dont want to allow any puck towards a defender, by hockey instinct.. they're conditioned to play keep-away.

i believe it was more in line with a crosscheck to the upper chest. the impact with the ice drew blood from the side/back of his head. the refs saw head bleeding, and one thought the stick had come up higher.

Eakins cross-checked Pavelski in the chest, which was a two-minute minor in most cases, and caused Joe to fall back off balance. And he would have probably re-gained his footing, but then clipped Paul Stastny and fell completely over on his head, with no chance to protect himself. And the refs decided to call a major based on the outcome of everything that happened instead of just for the infraction.

The rule changes that I want to see are: 1. Remove trapezoid 2. Icing negated when puck goes through the blue paint of the crease 3. Call a penalty on the "Michigan", for carrying the puck I would also like much stricter enforcement of the Instigator penalty.

@@idontgivetkachuk I'm sorry man, I'm not trying to knock you. You're one of the better creators here. Mostly I'm annoyed because there is an increase in "top 10 hockey" or "analysis" channels that are literally just attention farm scripts written by AI that get churned out to make money. Just feels like this topic in particular is really well covered and we all know what the rule changes are going to be. It's not just hockey youtube either. It's sitewide and I know the algorithm rewards content like this. It's just... Creatively destructive, if you know what mean. But I'm in no way trying to knock your hard work. I realize you put a ton of effort into your content.
