Iris Elba appeals for urgent government action on serious youth violence with his new campaign 'Don’t Stop Your Future' and to coincide with its launch today (8th January 2024), he shares the single and music video entitled ‘Knives Down’.
In the video directed by MD Films, Idris is seen holding a debate in the House of Commons, alongside the families of victims, as their stories and those of the worst affected communities across the UK are poignantly highlighted.
The track, which features UK rapper DB Maz and is produced by the acclaimed Fraser T Smith and FaNaTiX, represents the frustration and anger towards the government for their inaction on knife crime. It features hard-hitting lyrics which urge Parliament to take urgent action, having neglected addressing the issue for too long - giving a voice to those most impacted by knife crime and to use the power of music to raise awareness of the issue.
Alongside this special release today, Idris is at Parliament Square presenting a backdrop of outfits symbolic of all the lives lost to knife crime last year. He's also calling for the Government to action the immediate banning of zombie knives and machetes, as well as funding youth services.

In the year ending March 2023, there were around 50,500 offences involving a sharp instrument in England and Wales (excluding Devon & Cornwall). This was 4.7% higher than in 2021/22 but 7% lower than in 2019/20. The West Midlands Police recorded the highest rate of 178 offences per 100,000 population. In contrast, North Yorkshire recorded the lowest rate of 35 offences per 100,000 population. In the year ending March 2023, there were just over 19,000 cautions and convictions made for possession of a knife or offensive weapon. Juveniles (aged 10-17) were the offenders in around 18% of cases. Data from NHS Digital shows there were 3,775 “hospital episodes” recorded in English hospitals in 2022/23 due to assault by a sharp object. This was a 9.5% decrease compared to 2021/22, and a 3.6% increase compared to 2014/15. _ A lot of data but the fact is if knives are banned or more harshly penalised then the people using knives now will just start using something else, like acid attacks etc. The key is addressing the cause not the side effects. They should be addressing economical inequality and educational failings.

@@Skiiman24 When you have easy access to a weapon, it's a lot easier to make the decision to kill in the moment then if it takes extra minutes or hours to acquire the weapon first.

Love your videos I’m from Australia this one really hits home I’ve been stabbed 7 times when I was 18 I thought I was going to die but god helped me through it…. Knive crime here is really bad aswell

As long as trapping and being a gangster is praised and given respect. It will never become obsolete. That is why a video like this will never change anything. Cuz for every song like this there are 50 trap songs telling people it is the only way for the young youth from the hood to become respected and make money. I may be pessimistic and negativ, but I dont see shit change. But with all that said. I liked the song and message.
