Күн бұрынIris Elba appeals for urgent government action on serious youth violence with his new campaign 'Don’t Stop Your Future' and to coincide with its launch today (8th January 2024), he shares the single and music video entitled ‘Knives Down’.
In the video directed by MD Films, Idris is seen holding a debate in the House of Commons, alongside the families of victims, as their stories and those of the worst affected communities across the UK are poignantly highlighted.
The track, which features UK rapper DB Maz and is produced by the acclaimed Fraser T Smith and FaNaTiX, represents the frustration and anger towards the government for their inaction on knife crime. It features hard-hitting lyrics which urge Parliament to take urgent action, having neglected addressing the issue for too long - giving a voice to those most impacted by knife crime and to use the power of music to raise awareness of the issue.
Alongside this special release today, Idris is at Parliament Square presenting a backdrop of outfits symbolic of all the lives lost to knife crime last year. He's also calling for the Government to action the immediate banning of zombie knives and machetes, as well as funding youth services.

I went to school with one of the boys featured in this video. He was an incredibly talented actor and due to hood politics and knife violence, he couldn’t reach his potential. I make it part of my life’s work to stay creative and keep his legacy alive. Big up Idris for giving a voice to the voiceless. It inspires me to keep doing the same.

In Bristol, back in December 2019, just ten days after the birth of my son, I experienced a profound loss. A young person I mentored, who was like a little brother to me, tragically lost his life. He was only 17 and was killed by his 14-year-old friend, all over a dispute about a phone charger. It was a Saturday when this senseless act took place, over something so trivial. That day, I felt as if a part of me was taken away, a part I’ll never be able to reclaim. Rest in peace, Tyrone "Stains" Hayman. It pains me deeply that he never had the chance to meet my son and that the world won't witness the blossoming of his potential.

It is part of his Don't Stop Your Future campaign, in which he demands from the government to finally address the issue about so-called Zombie Knives or Survival Knives and Machetes. Basically he wants the ban immediately. Which in my opinion is a great thing to do

I agree - people can do harm with just about anything, which means that mindsets have to be changed (I believe that's why, at the end, there's mention of youth services as part of the bill - to change mindsets). However... I work in A&E. 80% of the life-threatening stabbings I've seen in the past 2 years have involved a machete. Why? They cut deep and allow the perpetrator to not have to get so "up close and personal" with their victim because of the size. Many seem to swing it like a baseball bat, with devastating consequences. A kitchen knife will absolutely kill someone - no doubt - but, unless they happen to get "lucky", it'll take a lot more effort than with a machete. Besides, people need kitchen knives to prepare food. Outside of farms, people don't *need* machetes, and nobody needs zombie knives (which cause a *lot* more damage than standard blades). These are things that can realistically be banned, reducing the numbers I see, without impacting law-abiding people just trying to make their dinner. But I do agree that, without the youth services element changing mindsets, we'll only end up swapping machetes and zombie knives for something just as bad, if not worse.

The mindset is affected by the government. I listened to chunkz and filly's podcast where they featured idris. They extensively discussed this issue and one of the factors is that that kids are growing up with too much time on their hands and zero mentorship. The government isn't willing to invest in youth centres and other programmes that keep kids off the streets. It all starts from the top

I agree that banning knives won’t solve knife crime just like how banning drugs doesn’t end the drug trade. However, the purpose of this song is to highlight the issue - it is clearly designed to maximise chances of reaching the mainstream while still representing the voices of the communities directly affected, with a radio edited / poppy song that has a simple solution people can point to. Well done Idris! The details of actual legislation can be worked out later to mitigate unintended consequences and maximise effectiveness. It needs to get to parliament first.

Thank You so much! I wish people would realise just how hard it is to get over someones death. Im learning about this at school right now and its so shocking. Near my home, a 22yro woman was stabbed on xmas eve. SHe has a 6 year old daughter. Her mother will never see her start secondary school, start her period, get into college or be who her mother aspired her to be! Its so cruel, i dont know any of the people but i am greiving for them: who knows, it could be someone close to us next. Love you Idris and everyone in the video, you have really showed everyone this isnt a laughing matter! Starting this year with this has really gave me a fresh mindset, young children now know how cruel this world is, thank you for putting it into that perspective! So you think banning music as well is a good idea? Full censorship? And who would be in control of that then, you? The gov? You think that for good to triumph in this situation we should lower ourselves to the level of evil by resorting to dystopian oppression? Look it may seem like an easy fix to just be like "Oh I don't like this let's ban it", but that really isn't the way. Oppression, because thats what cesorship/banning is, will NEVER fix anything. In fact a look at history will tell you quite clearly. We need to maturely recognise the cause of the problem (the real causes not a scapegoat) not encourage more of a divide amongst ourselves.

Take that energy on the road and put it in to legit stuff... don't ever think you don't deserve it... change your mind set, what you believe will come to fruition. A lot of the quality's you take from road you can transfer into work, endurance, drive, responsibility for close people around you, encoragment, not afraid to challenge, critique, problem solving. These are all quality's that people are looking for to be leaders within there company's... don't count yourself out. What you have been through has made you who you are today, good and bad and all you can do is use that to your advantage. If just one person reads what I have wrote and it can changes there mind set just a little bit it will be worth the 5 minutes I took to explain this.
