Bentley Turbo R
There’s never brand snobbery on IDRIVEACLASSIC and I’m a firm believer that more modern cars can be just as a much of a classic as say an MGB or a model T and the Turbo R is a car which changed the course of history for Bentley and therefore deserves a place in the IDRIVEACLASSIC back catalogue.
I’d also like to take this opportunity to thank my friend Sam Skelton, a far more knowledgable man on the Bentleys of this era than I’ll ever be, for his additional supplied knowledge to help make this video.
Now anyway, back to the Turbo R back story!
The Turbo R, with the R standing for road holding is the car known as the car which saved Bentley.
The car came to market in 1985 and was produced until 1997 with over just shy of 7,500 made during the entire production run including the Turbo RT.
The story of the Turbo R began with the first iteration which was the 1982 Mulsanne turbo which had the engine in Corniche spec with a solex 4 barrel carb instead of twin SUs with a Garrett Alresearch TO4 turbo, with no suspension changes and a main cosmetic difference of colour coded grille.
In 1985, we got the Turbo R and this changed the game completely for the Mulsanne. The Turbo R was created with thicker anti roll bars and other suspension changes and unlike the Mulsanne turbo, had the alloys as standard.
The work on improving the handling had begun in 1983 when the roll stiffness was increased 50% and the anti roll bar rates upped 100% in front and 60% to rear and increasing the damping and with amendments to the rear subframe, the car justified the R in its name.
The engine is this is the 6.75l turbo Bentley V8 and being an earlier car, we’ve got the three speed TH400 automatic box which as you’ll see on drive, isn’t sluggish and really works with the pace you’re driving at and feels very modern for the era of the car.
The Turbo R quickly took the shine off the Mulsanne turbo, which was quietly brought to a close production wise in 1986.
Like all good cars, Bentley didn’t rest on their laurels and various changes were made throughout the production including gaining EFI in 1987 and active ride for 1989 alongside the revised dash.
You’ll note when we look inside this, it’s the cusp of change and sports the older dash and doesn’t have active ride. A lot of modern owners in the current age choose to pick the older vehicles to avoid the active ride, but should you purchase one with this, please note it can be retrospectively changed to the earlier spec and all reputable garages specialising in Bentleys seem to be quite comfortable undertaking this work.
You’ll also note on this example we’ve got the column change but this was dropped in 1992 and the car gained a 4 speed box to boot. Specialists will also advise it was around this time that Bentley invested in the new Zytec engine management which is shared with continental and these cars are apparently more suspectible to head gasket failure.
There were other facelifts throughout production lifetime including one in 1996 with the shallower grille and the Turbo RT launched in 1996, but the car was eventually replaced with The Arnage in 1997.
Fun fact for those of you at home who aren’t as geeky as me, Arnage is part of the Le Mans track.

What a marvelous, well done video. I am on my 10th Bentley Turbo R, a 1997 with 385 horsepower and 569 ft. Lbs of torque…let me me tell you, it’s like driving a jet going down a runway. You never ever run out of power…even at 130 mph and 6,000lbs…this car keeps pulling. For anyone that has never owned or driven one…you need to…it’s so worth it. You Must be the Top Turbo R Fan ..Are there many still I the States.?I'm in the U.K and I have a 69 Charger which is quite different but I do love these Bentleys

I sure am - unfortunately, there are very few examples…let alone good ones. Todays cars are just awful - they all look the same and have no passion in them what-so-ever…find yourself a good example and drive one…the torque and how well this car moves is unlike anything else. Some of them started out with 30k miles…but I drive mine. These cars do not do well sitting…the more you drive them…the better they are…I have 3 left…all with over 120k miles and going strong. Kindly, Stephen

Another smashing review, Steph! As a broke-ass 19 year old college student back in 1990, I called the Rolls-Royce toll free number in an ad in the Wall Street Journal and requested a Turbo R brochure. A few weeks later, I recieved a very nice catalog and an invitation to attend a test drive and demonstration day being held by the local dealer. At the time I didn't have two nickels to rub together and my daily driver was a beat-up 1971 Ford that was half primer and half Bondo. Although I flirted with the idea of showing up and demanding my test drive, I ultimately chickened out. That remains one of my biggest regrets.

I got a 91 a couple of years ago! A few little niggles, need to replace speakers really, a couple of very small paint issues, passenger seat not working, CD won't eject, one door cap cracking, but when you drive it they just don't matter, the best car I have ever driven it's like you are driving sitting in your lounge. Expect to pay a couple of grand a year for upkeep and find a 'man that can' for maintenance so you don't have to worry if things go wrong. Will be trading mine in for one where everything is working (if you can find one) in the near future. Worth every penny, mine was purchased originally for £140,000 in 1991 (there was a discount off that but not sure how much) I got it for less than £13,000 with loads of history. It's done 110K the last 20k being in the last 15 years. I promise you you won't regret buying one but you must use it once a week or the battery seems to go flat, great for day trips to the seaside or stately homes etc. Fuel is expensive I know but it is for an average car now so it actually makes owning one of these more desirable not less. Go on treat yourself.

Nice car! Still, but comparison, I bought a 1991 Jaguar Sovereign (XJ6 XJ40) instead of one of these. I do my own mechanical work and the Bentley/RR prices are almost 10:1 compared to Jaguar prices. The Sovereign interior is almost as nice and the overall experience is better with a Jaguar IMHO. It all boils down to price versus what you get. If your budget is infinite, yet go with the Bentley, but if your budget isn't and you want this kind of car, the Jaguar might be better!

Watching this immediately brought back fond memories of my 1994 XJ6, I'm so happy to see your comment! I stumbled into mine and commuted in rush hour with her for a year and the only thing I had to do that wasn't an oil change was have a coolant hose burst. That cat was way more fun to own and drive than I ever expected! The Turbo R definitely strikes my fancy but the Jag is an overlooked classic

Definitely a classic, no question. You will need a very understanding bank manager though. You will probably be surprised by the way it handles when you get into it. Good stuff Steph.

I've loved these ever since they were new. I remember looking st the used prices of these around 20 years ago. You could get a good one for £10k. They haven't gone up that much since then.

Bentleys and Rolls of that era make more sense to me than the newer ones which are too fast to use fully and look a bit overdone inside.

Galvanic corrosion (dissimilar-metal corrosion) is an electrochemical process in which one metal corrodes preferentially, when in electrical contact with a different type of metal, and both metals are immersed in an electrolyte such as water. Nice car, Good video. Cheers!

Very interesting indeed, Steph. There is a very good reason why Bentley was still using the ancient General Motors Turbohyomatic 400 gearbox. There simply was not a 4 speed box that could handle the torque of this engine. If my memory serves, the torque output is roughly 700 ft/lbs, and that can break things easily. The other thing is that Rolls-Royce had plenty of experience with the THM400, since they had been building them under license for years. That example is absolutely wonderful. I have a friend in Hong Kong who is an expert about these cars. This one has all the things spot on that John often criticizes about cars not looked after just right. He would even applaud the tufting in the seats, as it is nice and puffy, not flat, as so many redone cars have. Even the correct Avon Turbosteel tyres. Whoever has owned this car throughout the last 33 years as cared for it and maintained to the highest standard. This one will not sell cheap, BUT it is worth whatever is asked. They do not come much better than this one. Ever. Even the mileage is fairly good. These cars absolutely HATE to sit. It destroys them. This one has enough miles to indicate it has been driven and enjoyed. Can you tell I'm jealous? I would absolutely love to own that car, but I have nowhere to keep it yet. When I do have somewhere to keep it, I would still be nervous, as I will be living down a gravel road in the tropics. Drat.

This one is beautifully kept! I totally agree with what you say here about the understated luxury in terms of this car's overall look. It's something today's luxury car makers seem to have forgotten, including Rolls Royce because some of the new products look rather garish to my eyes. As for the current BMW and Mercedes range, forget about it!

Awesome stuff as always Steph. Inspired by you earlier videos, I recently decided to purchase a second Morris minor, a roadworthy 1950 side valve engine lowlight and I drove it 407km home in 5 hours with 1 1/2 tanks of fuel, in a similar trip like what you and Richard had done in his 1951 car recently. I can proudly say that it didn't let me down and got me home in one piece with no problems at all. The cars so tidy, I would have loved to have offered it to you for a review on your channel. Thank you for the inspiration and encouragement that you give in your videos on classic cars. 😊👍

What a pleasure to see you enjoying that Turbo R, Steph. I have owned numerous Bentleys, and particularly liked my Turbo R. FYI those examples with the later seat-shaped adjustment controls usually stop working because the batteries for those controls leak onto the circuit board. The first thing to do when buying that era of Bentley or Rolls-Royce is to replace those batteries (£5 each). Otherwise you are looking at a £2500 invoice.

The factory moon roof option is extremely rare. Next to GB, the US market was the next biggest market for sales and i have only seen in person maybe 3 that have the moon roof. It's extremely rare. I'm not sure why because back in that time, it was so elegant to have a moon roof that you would think that a $245,000 car would have it as standard. But I'm guessing that people that have that much money don't want wind noise or that same air blowing throughout the cabin. Only my assumption, but nice to see it previewed in this vehicle.

I watched this more thoroughly, Steph, and I think you so perfectly communicate how this car really is to drive. Of course, the quality is so obvious when you look at that thick, sumptuous leather and the solid wood inside, but I think the drive and your commentary really explain why this car was a turnaround, make-or-break car for the company. No screeching tires, etc, but it looks like a fantastic driving position with excellent visability, and between your commentary and the video, it just shows how pleasant it is to drive. As usual, you hit it right on the mark. Well done, and thanks!!!!

Love My Turbo R. Later models have 4 speed box with sport option. When you bury your right foot into the carpet, she picks up her petticoat and takes off. Cheap as chips to insure. Regular servicing a must. I have a 94 model. Rust free and the V8 purrs. These cars often outlive their owners. Park one of these next to the latest Merc or BMW and they look majestic. Class, but not in your face.

Whoa, Nellie! Always a pleasant surprise for Sundays! I remember when these first came out, and the US car magazines raved about it. It was a resurgence (appropriately!) for Bentley, though it was taking baby steps after the introduction of the Mulsanne that was intentionally differentiated from the Silver Spirit in a more sporting manner. I know the US talk show host Jay Leno bought one new (and still has it, like every other car he has owned, best I know). There was also a funny segment appearing on another US talk show "Late Night with David Letterman", where he took various cars for test drives at a dealers. I remember him taking this grand car out, and then you hear a "thunk", as he rolled over something. I doubt there was any damage, but it was a funny moment! Yep, the 1980s! Love them!

the 80's were great times you can always tell an 80's automobile for some reason the square boxy shape was in this Bentley was gorgeous the box shape fit this car well back then and i agree about the gauges digital stinks I prefer the regular read out gauges also they look better and are classier

Great video. One correction, the Zytec engine management didn't arrive until the 96 model year. Until then it was Bosch. Totally agree on the running cost. You think you'll do it cheaply, and most if the time you wont.

Fun geeky fact! These models use a SAAB turbo boost control management system (APC/Automatic Performance Control) as used on the SAAB 900 Turbo classic. Invented by SAAB in the late 1970's and modified over the years for each subsequent model.

It’s a real Bentley & one of the last before the German owners changed the design but more importantly the engine, what followed was/is nothing compared to the Bentley turbo R. I was lucky enough to drive several versions of the Rolls & Bentley derivatives but the Turbo R was an absolute joy to take on a real drive, l had to drive from Essex to north Wales many times & believe me when l say what a privilege it was to drive this monster of a car on such a long run, l did the journey there & back & felt really refreshed when l arrived home.

regarding the panel lights , if driving on a country road where there is no street lighting it is easier to see if the panel lights are turned down.

If memory serves me right the active ride was basically a Citroen bx system having worked on Bentley Continental after a miss fire found it was a bent valve and push rod what a cracking car thou

Hi from New Zealand. I’ve only recently found your channel and also Hub Nut, and thoroughly enjoy both. The amount of research that goes into your presentation I think can’t be underestimated…it’s definitely more information than you’ll get from 2 minutes on Google that’s for sure. I went back and watched a review you done on an old CX and loved it. One request…could you briefly cover on your reviews how capable the car is to drive in modern traffic. IE I mentally like the idea of a classic, but also don’t like the idea of something screaming at me as I’m wobbling my way down the road. With that in mind I brought a NSU Ro80….great dar, when it works. Partner has a 85 Corolla in the shed, owned from new. If you ever find yourself NZ way like it appears Hub Nut did…youde love a drive around sampling some kiwi cars

My future Father in Law bought a 1985 Rolls Royce Silver Spirit (same bodyshell) for our wedding in 1999. I got to drive it a few times after and as you said Steph its easy to place

I've seen people drop 30-40k on older Bentley & Rolls, only to throw up even more costly problems. Please, please, please ... stay away from these cars, and don't believe any mechanics that says; "They're not that bad". Those liars are using you, for mortgage repayment purposes … that's the extent of your relationship with your Bentley/Rolls mechanic/restoration garage!

Great video again Steph! I've got a 1996 one, I've been meaning to offer it to you for review for a while now, guess I've missed the boat on that! Mine's in Wildberry which I really like, and I do prefer the later dash, though sadly I don't have the town and country horns. Instead of them I have a "manual" mode for the gearbox which is good for icy conditions, which is a bit more useful to be fair. I've had it nearly a year now, and I love it, which you have to do really to put up with the bills, which have been a little higher than I hoped but a lot of the things I've had to spend money on are the sort of things that should last, each bill so far has been smaller than the last which I hope is a trend that will continue. Head gaskets is a slight worry, though from what I've read it seems to be caused mostly by people thrashing them before the engine has properly warmed up. I don't really thrash mine at all, but I don't do any heavy acceleration until it's properly warm anyway. I love how low revving the engine is too, it idles at 500 and when I'm doing 70 on the motorway it's only doing around 1700/1800 RPM. Glad you enjoyed driving it, it's really much easier to drive than you'd think a car of that size would be, and goes round corners much better than you'd expect.

I'm the 13th custodian of an '89 Turbo R . Have had it for 4+ years now . Am looking at a '73 Rolls Royce Shadow for Spring purchase , alas , the Bentley has to go . It is near mint and very well maintained with 65,000 kms .

This car really suits you Steph you look at home in it . It really is beautiful inside and like you say doesn’t look dated it’s so classic and clean lines ! My friend had a Mulsanne turbo back in 95 in silver green metallic with ivory leather ot was beautiful- I used to love going out in it with her you knew you had arrived in it for sure !

This car saved Bentley as it was a good mixture of luxury and perormance. The styling is quite understated although the very large tail-lights give it a slightly Japanese look.

I was lucky enough in the early 90's to work for a prestige car dealer (merc and Porsche main dealer) and got to drive a couple of Bentley's; one was a Mulsanne Turbo and the other was a Bentley Eight. I have to say the Eight still holds a place in my memory as the quietist most comfortable car I'd driven and it's a hard toss between that back then and my current drive which is also incredibly quiet and smooth; though I think the Bentley might have just beaten it at 70mph for being quiet though not by much. In so many other areas modern cars have caught up; with so much on my lady that the Bentley never had and if it had have been an option I bet would have upped the price by a good few grand. It certainly still even then would have cost around 3 times what my girl cost me to buy brand new. At today's prices I dread to think.

Hi Steph. That's a beautiful example of a lovely car.....and yes, I agree that colour is perfect. I've only ever seen the Turbo R in mid-dark green and this blue just looks the bizzo by comparison. Always thought the Bentley-buyer was someone who could not quite afford a Rolls as I couldn't see much of a difference to the vehicle's target market. Your review has certainly opened my eyes on that one as Rolls-Royce would probably larch anyone who suggested doing anything as vulgar as fitting the engine with a turbo charger or fitting a ghastly engine revolution counter gauge to the burred walnut dashboard, let alone making holes for those other ancillary gauges or suspension mods. "What? Sporty? No, no, no my dear old thing; if that's what you propose, then I suggest - nay insist - that you hand your resignation in immediately and toddle off to a commoner's workshop". That Turbo R still has a lot of the RR refinement as seen when you were just cruising along effortless and silently, yet the vehicle certainly sat more poised and level than any RR I have been in. I'd have loved to see what happened when you pushed your foot to the floor - just to see what the turbo did to that big V8, but the roads weren't really conducive, so no matter. It was still lovely to see one out and about. I am glad you mentioned the upkeep on one of these things too. I learned the hard way that buying a classic car on the cheap and doing it up as you drive it, is the most expensive way to own a car. Not only in terms of your wallet, but also in lost time enjoying the classic experience out on the roads. Just because a big expensive car is cheap, it does not follow that you can afford to run it or repair it when it goes wrong.....and being a classic British car, it will definitely do that. It is far better to spend money up front on a better example than to be the one who spends the money on all the bits you dont see and then has a hard time justifying the price tag when it goes up for sale. Part of the fun of a classic (for most people) is being able to fix the car themselves and with a car like the Bentley - unless you know a bloke in the field or are one yourself - this is largely not possible and unless you have the deep pockets, you won't be driving it much at all while you save up for its next service. I love the Bentley and the Rolls-Royce to look at and ride in, but unless I win a lottery, I sadly won't be owning one - even though my hands itch to own one like that Turbo R. You are moving up in the world Lady Steph of Yorkshire, has a nice ring to it doesn't it. 😀 I've never been taken by Bently or Rolls Royce of this era as they tread a fine line between tradition and simply looking a little old fashioned. That said you can't avoid the incredible engineering behind these cars. They are vast both inside and out with an incredible attention to detail which I really like. You could have probably just made a half hour video panning around the car with some music and still have missed something. I'm in full agreement with you on those instruments Steph, a nicely styled set of analogue gauges can be a work of art which is sadly missing from many modern cars. I expect it's more cost effective to just put touch screens everywhere these days. Another great review Steph, well done!

The biggest thing that you need to remember is that although these cars are now cheaper than you average secondhand Ford or Vauxhall they still cost the same to maintain as a brand new Bentley as an example I was quoted £35 for a genuine nut bazar but true so if your going to buy one make sure that you have the money to maintain it.

There was one of these on an "F" plate, in this same colour, dumped opposite my house. It was there for about 18-months. Four flat tyres & covered in bird shit, by the time it eventually got towed.

Glorious old boats these, much more elegant than its modern equivalents. If you have a chance check out an Arnage, the last truly elegant Bentley with much more modern underpinnings.

Very nice car and I love that coulor. I don't think it is a 'footballers' car, some of those tended to be but that is refinement. Bentley did do well with that car and you can understand why it is known for saving the company. I won't be buying one though but it I did I could repair the seats myself without any problem. However it if is a well maintained example then that would be one less job on the list. BTW love that horn, someone at Bentley had a sense of humour. Thanks Steph for another great video. What really annoys me in modern cars is they say they have leather interiors, but they just don't last. They have the thinnest possible leather on a fabric base. Bring back proper leather!

Another great review Steph. Lovely big old car, the steering wheel is the only thing that jars for me. Doesn’t seem in keeping with the luxury feel of the car.

You might want to tell the owner that the rubber pipe has broken off the bosch fuel pressure regulator. Therefore fuel pressure is not changing with boost.

They always seemed exotic to me as an American. Before this Bentley seemed just a trim level for RR. The only inexpensive thing on the car is the GM transmission

You look very at home in that Bentley if I might say so Steph. I'd love the comfort of a car like that in my old age but the fuel consumption and the price of petrol these days terrified me! I'd perhaps disagree slightly re servicing. I wouldn't say it was a car that is beyond a skilled mechanic's abilities as it's still in that 'analogue' period. I simply don't trust anyone other than myself to work on my vehicles and do have a very lot of experience but on the quality of spares you're absolutely right, reject rubbish knock of pattern parts.
