IELTS Listening - Map Vocabulary

To do well in map and plan questions, you need to understand the language of location, especially prepositions of place, and direction.
In this video, we’ll look at 5 sets of vocabulary commonly used in map and plan questions, along with sample sentences to show the words and phrases used in context.
Each set of sentences describes or gives directions on a sample map or plan to give you some practice at visualising the information as you'll have to do in your test.

Hello Jacky! I am really grateful for the tutorial you have prepared for those who want to take the IELTS exam, it is very helpful, keep up. Here I have a couple of questions for you related to this video. Sent3, After crossing the bridge take the second turning on the right and you will see the retirement home straight ahead( is the second turning on the right or left? in my opinion, it is on the left). Sent5, The bus station is on the right just past the shopping center (is the bus station is on the right or the left? in my opinion, it is on the left, isn't it?) Looking for you. Thank you!

Hi Mulualem, The sentence actually says, 'After crossing the bridge, take the second turning on the left and you will see the retirement home straight ahead'. If you are walking past the shopping centre going towards the bus station, the bus station is on the right. I hope this helps. Best regards, Jacky

I’m glad you’ve found the lesson helpful. If the bus station is just past the shopping centre, you must be walking west to go past the shopping centre before you reach the bus station. Therefore, both the shopping centre and the bus stop must be on your right hand side. I hope this makes it clear.

06:51 Please correct me if I'm wrong. The bus station is located just before the shopping mall. So, we can't say that it is "just past the shopping mall"?

You are correct. To say that the bus station is "just past the shopping mall" would mean that you would get to the shopping mall first and then the bus station. "The bus station is located just before the shopping mall" means that you would reach the bus station first.

How the stokeford is slightly east of the river stoke ? isn't in the north how in the east ?

Look at the compass. Stokeford is to the east of the river.

The leisure center is on the other side of sport center to Dance studio. I dont understand this sentence. For example: A is leisure center; B is Sport center; C is Dance studios. So we have: A-B-C or B-A-C?

If you walk from east to west along the pedestrian walkway, the bus station is on the right just past the shopping centre. I hope this makes it clearer.
