If you have the option to take both the IELTS and the TOEFL, it seems difficult to decide and you may wonder: Which is easier? I studied for both the IELTS and the TOEFL and finally took the TOEFL Home Edition. During my preparation I realized that the two tests differ greatly in some respects and that there is a definite answer to this question! I'm going to talk about the reading, listening, speaking and writing sections of both tests and tell you
- Where the two tests differ
- In which case you should not take one of the tests
- What you need to do before deciding for one
MORE VIDEOS FOR YOU
IELTS vs TOEFL - Which English Test Should You Take?: • IELTS vs TOEFL - Which...
GUIDE
A short guide to help you with your decision.
For the brave: If you like being challenged and want to learn something new always choose the opposite ;)
1) READING
I found the reading section of the TOEFL harder than that of the IELTS.
MY TIP:
If you struggle with complex texts or if you are a slower reader, choose the IELTS.
If you don't have problems with long and complex texts, you can choose the TOEFL or the IELTS.
2) LISTENING
In the TOEFL you first listen to the audio and then you answer multiple choice questions.
In the IELTS you answer multiple responses style questions and you need to write down words while listening.
MY TIP:
If you have difficulties in understanding English words or spelling, choose the TOEFL.
If you are good in spelling and a quick writer, you can choose the IELTS or the TOEFL.
3) SPEAKING
In the TOEFL you speak into a microphone and not to a real person. This is more like giving a presentation. In the IELTS you talk to a real person.
MY TIP:
If you prefer presenting things, choose the TOEFL.
If you prefer natural conversations, choose the IELTS.
4) WRITING
In the TOEFL there are two writing tasks:
1. You listen to a lecture and you read an article. You then have to write a text where you combine the information.
2. You have to write an essay that is pretty much freestyle.
In the IELTS there are also two writing tasks:
1. You need to describe a chart, map, or something else.
2. You have to write an argumentative essay.
MY TIP:
If you are familiar with describing charts etc. and if you like writing argumentative essays, choose the IELTS.
If you are not used to this, choose the TOEFL because you only have to memorize one structure (for task 1) and the rest is pretty much freestyle.

By the Australian immigration department, the score threshold for the superior English level on *writing* is 30 points (out of 30) on TOEFL or 8 out of 9, on IELTS (does not matter whether it's general or scientific). My question is: which one is more achievable?
@juva
@juva 3 жыл бұрын
Hi, that's an excellent question! I found TOEFL Writing easier because there are only two tasks and the independent Writing task is pretty much freestyle. Many people have commented that they used my TOEFL Writing templates and were able to score 30 in TOEFL Writing. I also scored 30 and I'd say it's definitely doable. For IELTS Writing you must prepare more tasks. However, since you don't need a perfect score, it's definitely not such a pressure. I'd recommend having a look at both writing tasks and figuring out which suits you best. Hope this helps :)

Hello juva, Which of these tests is easier to handle for a person who is weak in grammar? your expert opinion is needed. Could you specify any book for grammar to be choosed for study and practice?
@juva
@juva 3 жыл бұрын
Hi :) That's an excellent question! Regarding grammar the TOEFL and the IELTS are similar - you must know the grammar for both tests. I'm afraid you won't get around that. At the moment I can't recommend a specific book. I'd recommend two things: first, have a look at grammar websites or books and pick one you like. Second, familiarize yourself with the IELTS and the TOEFL and figure out which one suits you better by having a look at other aspects apart from grammar so that you can find out which is best for you. Does this help? :)

@juva 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Ahmed, I'm glad you like the video. In TOEFL Writing there are two writing tasks (the integrated and independent essay). You must know the structure of both. However, the independent is really easy to remember. In the IELTS there are several types of essays that can come up. Depending on the question you get you must answer it in a different way and there are a lot of different questions so that you need to remember more structures than in the TOEFL. Does this help?
@Ahmed-fc8yz

@juva
@juva 3 жыл бұрын
@@Ahmed-fc8yz That's true. You can get the essay on any topic. However, in TOEFL Writing task 2 the structure is always this one: Introduction + Body (arguments + examples) + Conclusion. In the IELTS this is different: for example, if you get an agree/disagree question the structure is this: Intro + argument 1 + argument 2 + conclusion. If you get a cause/solution question it's like this: Intro + Cause + Solution + Conclusion. Do you see what I mean? Whereas you can always use the same structure in the independent task in the TOEFL, this is not the case in the IELTS. Does this help?

TOEFL ibt 110 vs IELTS with 7.5 overall (7.0 min each section), which one do you find easier? I took IELTS a couple monthso ago, Overall 7.5 (Listening 8.5, Reading 8.0, Writing 6.0, Listening 6.5). Should I keep trying IELTS or give TOEFL ibt a try instead? I find IELTS writing really hard (spent over 10 lessions 1 to 1 private lessons too ...), especially that I have to practice hand writing which is literally physically painful to me :(
@juva
@juva 3 жыл бұрын
Since the tests are quite different it's not easy to say which one you will find easier. But if you found writing really hard and if you prefer typing on a computer, TOEFL may be for you since it's a computer-based test regardless of whether you take the TOEFL in the test center or do the TOEFL Home Edition. Think about whether it would make sense to prepare again for the IELTS given that you already put some work in your preparation and whether you can get better if you invested a bit more time in studying. If you think this doesn't make any sense, choose TOEFL.

Hello Juva, a question regarding the writing section of the TOEFL is there a words limit or we can write as much as we can and how long does it take to be prepared for TOEFL Exam I'm planning to take it next week is it enough or should I postpone it for later your videos are extremely helpful thank you so much
@juva
@juva 3 жыл бұрын
Hello Moh'd, there is a word count in the TOEFL but it's a minimum requirement, so you can write more than that. Regarding your second question, this depends on your current level of English and the score you want to achieve. If you are fluent in English one week is sufficient, you just need to understand the test format so that you know how you have to answer the questions. I only prepared for one week and this was doable. Hope this helps :)

TOEFL is far more difficult than IELTS. Why? Because corpus analysis of hundreds of TOEFL tests shows that its lexical universe consists of 16,736 words. The lexical universe for IELTS is a mere 5,781 words. That means that every TOEFL test will have about 4,000 different words on it and the 4,000 will be from among the universe of 16,736 words. Every IELTS will have less than 3,000 different words on it and they will be from among the 5,781 words that make up the IELTS universe.
