WHY HAVE A STRATEGY?
In TOEFL Speaking, your notes must support you in getting a high TOEFL Speaking score. This means two things: you need to write down the right content and you need to write down the content in the right way. Therefore, you need the right note taking strategy for TOEFL Speaking.
1) TASK 1: PERSONAL CHOICE OR ADVANTAGES/DISADVANTAGES
In Task 1 in TOEFL Speaking you get a statement and you need to state your opinion or explain advantages or disadvantages of something.
WHAT?
If you get a personal choice task you write down two keywords for your two reasons that you provide to support your opinion. If you get an advantage/disadvantage task you write down two keywords for the advantages or disadvantages.
HOW?
You only need to write down two words, so there is nothing special here.
2) TASK 2: CAMPUS ANNOUNCEMENT
In task 2 in TOEFL Speaking you read a passage, usually a campus announcement, that talks about a change. After that you listen to a conversation between two students. One of the students states whether he agrees or disagrees and explains his opinion with two reasons. You must summarize the announcement and the opinion of the student.
WHAT?
Regarding the reading, you should write down a few keywords for the change the article announces and the two reasons it gives for this change. Regarding the listening, you should write down whether the student agrees or disagrees with the change. Further, you should take notes of the two reasons the student gives to support his opinion.
HOW?
In this task in TOEFL Speaking you should take notes in a specific way because this will make it a lot easier for you to speak. Make a table: On the left side you write down the information provided by the reading: the change, and the two reasons. On the right side you write down the information given by the student: his opinion about the change and his two reasons.
3) TASK 3: GENERAL TO SPECIFIC
In task 3 in TOEFL Speaking you must combine information from two sources: an article you read and a lecture you listen to. Taking good notes is very important in task 3 in TOEFL Speaking.
WHAT?
Regarding the reading, you should write down a few keywords regarding the topic of the reading, a definition of that topic, and one or two details from the reading. Regarding the listening, you should take notes of the topic of the lecture and the two examples given in the listening.
HOW?
I would recommend writing the information of both parts side by side. Write the keywords regarding the reading on the left side and the keywords concerning the listening on the right side. What you need to do next is circle the keywords that you want to use for your conclusion. This is a very efficient way of taking notes in task 3 in TOEFL Speaking.
4) TASK 4: ACADEMIC LECTURE
In TOEFL Speaking task 4 you listen to a lecture about an academic term or a concept.
WHAT?
In task 4 in TOEFL Speaking you should take notes of the following: the topic of the lecture, the definition of the topic, and the two examples. Keep it short.
HOW?
There is no specific way how you should write this down so I would suggest simply making bullet points.
