We're using IEW Structure and Style this year for writing with my 4th Grader. He has never used IEW before and is doing really well! Here is how we make it work. Do a Lesson with us!

Love love love IEW!! Taking writing off my teaching plate has been so helpful as well. We have played around a lot in how we use it. I tried doing IEW and grammar both 4x a week simultaneously, then we switched to IEW 2x a week and that just didn’t work for us; it felt entirely too disjointed for my kiddos. We use rod and staff English for grammar and it’s quite advanced when you get up into the 4th and beyond level books. I started rotating grammar and IEW every other week. One week they do grammar 5x a week, the next week we do IEW. It is working so well and feels like we’re accomplishing a lot more (ie they’re not rushing through their writing just to check it off the list).

@@JoyfulNoiseLiving it has made everything flow so much easier! I’m in no rush to finish grammar in 9 months and I’d rather they master the content and be able to use it in their writing as well.

Thanks for the video! I would like to hear more about your language arts philosophy on when to introduce formal writing, etc. I hear so many different views about when kids should learn to write essays.

I’m so thankful I stumbled upon this post! My son is 10, and he is the same! I have struggled to get him interested in writing. Last year I just dumped our Language Arts curriculum and only focused on Fix It! Grammar and three projects that he typed. I haven’t finished watching, but I wanted to stop and say, “Thank you!” I’m already feeling encouraged! ❤

Thanks for this video. I wasn't sure if IEW came with instructional videos or not, but hoped that it did. Now that I know it does, we will definitely be using this come 3rd or 4th grade.

We spread out writing as well. We do it two days a week and we alternate it with Grammar instruction.

Thank you for sharing! I have a 5th grade/10 year old boy who is just like your son and I have been contemplating using IEW for him after the holidays. My daughter is in 7th grade/12 years old and she loves to write so I have had to teach them very differently. Walking through how you are using it was very helpful for me. Thank you!

My son is the same with writing which is why we do IEW as well. He needs to a roadmap as well.

I’m interested on your thoughts regarding having your child type vs writing the paragraph. Do you have him write the paragraph then type? I was thinking of having my son do this since he gets so hung up on spelling words correctly. 🤔

oh yes, trying to do notebooking with my kids just did not happen. They would not write a thing, or minimal work. Just bought level b and taking our time, but grateful for the structure and knowledge given in the videos!

Is this a full curriculum? We use BJU but looking to switch it up. Is there more ELA additional packets for spelling/vocab etc...I don't quite understand their packages.

I actually didn’t for myself, I am a former English teacher, so most of what they teach in IEW I knew I could figure out. If you are skilled in Grammar and writing, I don’t think you need the teacher’s training, but if you struggle in that area, it may be a benefit to get it 💓

To be able to use the program for style and structure, do you need to have the videos? Budget friendly options

Great question!! I totally understand looking for a more budget friendly option. You COULD do it without the videos. The videos make it more independent, but without the videos YOU would have to teach the lesson to your kiddo. Way more affordable that way for sure!

Are so many different ones structure n style ones ..that is hard to know which one to choose...if videos are the same for all of them? Or if really need the videos for each of them? Do u need all levels?

You can decide which Structure and Style to use based on your child's age and level. If you kid hasn't done Structure and Style yet and they are 9, 10, or 11, I recommend Level A Year 1. If your child has never used it and they are 12 and older, I recommend Level B Year 1. After that you just move through the years.(Level A Year 2 would be next for the younger kid, and Level B Year 2 for the older kid).

I have my boys using Touch Type Spell currently. the best one I've used so far. simple and easy for them to track their progress.

Hi! I’m looking for a curriculum to teach my daughter how to type. Do you use it mainly to teach typing or both typing and spelling? I was going to try the phonetic zoo spelling and use touch type spell for learning typing? Your thoughts?

Great question! My son who is using this actually does NOT spell well. So yes, he copies what Andrew writes on the board. Sometimes he pauses the video so he can see clearly what was written down. 😁

If you purchased through my link it should have had you purchase the streaming option. There is a card that comes in your box with a code and instructions on how to get the streaming videos. You have to login into your account on iew.com.

My son is 13 and struggles with spelling and reading. Would this be a good curriculum for him? I have tried so many things.

I’m curious now but what you’ve tried? that’s so tough 😔 I’ve learned that sometimes kids are just not going to be good spellers, but there are some things you can do to help them. The video lessons for this may be good for him. It’s been working fairly well for my son who struggles. 😊 have you looked into the barten program? it’s a really great programs for kids who struggle with reading and spelling.

@@JoyfulNoiseLiving here is my list of what I have tried: All About Reading, IEW ( Fix it Grammar), Jackris, Masterbooks, CLE, Grammar Galaxy, Simple Grammar, Gentle Grammar, Explode the Code, Sequential Spelling, Night Zookeeper, Time For Learning, Nessy, All About Spelling…I think that’s it. I wanted to try Barton but, cannot afford it.

I bought Structure & Style 1A and Teacher training structure and style . Omg I am so overwhelmed with the teacher part. I still don’t get it. I don’t know how to use this program to the fullest potential 😭😭😭

Oh, I'm so sorry! It can be overwhelming! The basic thing you can try to do is just go step by step by step. The overall format for each lesson is read a source text, create a key word outline, then have your kiddo write a retelling of the source text using their key word outline. There is a checklist at the end of each lesson to show what should be included in each lesson. Then you "edit and check" the writing, using the checklist, and give it back to your child after that to make any corrections. And that's it! Move on to the next one. I have found that having the streaming lessons were really helpful. But if you can't get those, go at your own pace. We only do writing twice a week, not every day. Some weeks we skip it and just pick up where we left off after we have a little break. No pressure to do a writing lesson every day and try to finish the curriculum by a certain time. It's taking us 2 years for Structure and style 1A. I hope this helps!

Does your son know how to type? Did he know prior to the class? I have a reluctant writer 4th grader and am looking at IEW for next year. She's a lefty and gets hand fatigue, so I think she'd do much better if she learned to type first.

Well, he did do a typing program last year in 3rd Grade, but he struggled a bit and didn't get very far. I have him use the "talk to text" feature when he "writes" his papers. So he technically doesn't type or write it, but I know his speaking skills are strong. I'm doing this instead of him saying it to me, me writing it down, and then him copying it, which is another option to do for a reluctant writer.
