**SIMPLE WAYS TO USE ** IEW Writing Curriculum || Reviews + Flip Through
I have complete 4 years of IEW (Institute of Excellence in Writing) with my kids. I believe this method of creative writing is better, more fun, and easier than the method taught in Public Schools.
I will share:
How it works and how it is structured.
How I use it.
A Flip Through.
Comparison of levels.
Testimonies and Samples.
Here are some IEW products that I show in my video:

This is really interesting. I've heard of this program from a few other moms recently, but didn't know what it's like at all. The Keyword outline concept is interesting. I like the idea of focusing on articulating what you want to say...and the "dress up" concept is a fun way to describe it!

I have a question for anyone who could help. My son will be in 8th grade this coming fall. He is a very reluctant writer. I was planning on doing IEW this year with him but I just watched a video of Mr. Pudawa doing an overview of SSS and he stressed several times that the kids should do the program for at least 3 years to really lock in the tools taught. The problem is my son wants to go to public highschool so this would be his 1st and only year doing IEW. ( Unless he changes his mind). Now I'm thinking maybe EIW would be better. Any input would be appreciated!

For 5th I would do structure in style A1. And for 8th I would do B1. Always start with year 1 if it’s your first year. Level A is elementary and B is middle school. But if you decide to do the thematic units, you could do the same unit, just modify it.

Do you need to purchase both the DVD(s)? I heard you need to watch the DVD to understand the program. Is it really that confusing? Our community even had a viewing party... but we couldn't attend due to other obligations. You mentioned it is a full curriculum. This is just for ELA not for actually decoding reading, correct?
@LivingWithEve
@LivingWithEve Жыл бұрын
So with Structure & Style, it comes with streaming or DVD. Those are for the kids, but you can watch too. They recommend it. If you do that, you won't need the IEW DVDs. If you choose to do the IEW themed studies, it is requested that you do watch the DVDs. I did not the first time I did it and I was fine. But I was only doing Bible Heros. I eventually watched them and they did make a difference.

Great video! I haven’t used IEW with my kids yet but find myself very drawn to it. I think great writing can be your ticket to a lot of success and expression in this world. I’ve hesitated to use it though because of fear that it will create a formulaic writing style and/or won’t allow my kids’ own writing styles and voices to blossom. I also worry that the same routine year after year could get boring. What has your experience been in those areas??? I want to love it! And how compatible is it to a Charlotte Mason homeschool?
@LivingWithEve
@LivingWithEve 3 жыл бұрын
I feel like it is giving them tools. Studying and mimicking good literature is a technique taught by a lot of music teacher (Suzuki Method). It shows them the routes and gives them different options to try. And also encourages freedom to be creative later on. It’s a tool belt. I feel like other writing programs don’t really walk your hand through good story writing like IEW. Eventually they grow out of the techniques, some say HS but they method still sticks. I think with a lot of options comes a lot of freedom. Also every year the literature changes so they don’t get bored.

Does the iew writing curriculum count as a full language arts program? Or would I have to buy a separate curriculum for reading?
@LivingWithEve
@LivingWithEve 3 жыл бұрын
Add fix it grammar to it and then yes, full language arts. However I would add literature, maybe some fun booms to read and discuss,

Do you need to do the TWSS teacher course if you are using it for grade 3/4? Is it something you really need to do or is there enough guidance anyway in the teacher books? It’s just a lot of money to pay out if it’s not essential at any point. Thank you.

🙀🙀 hey!! I have been asking around in groups, and everyone totes says I need to do the TWSS! I am starting IEW this fall with a 6th grader/11.5 year-old who loves and is good at writing. So, I am worried about how lost I will be if I do NOT stream TWSS. We only have ancients and fables.... what do I do?! Lol
@LivingWithEve
@LivingWithEve 3 жыл бұрын
You won’t be lost, If he’s already a strong writer it will be easy to switch if that curriculum is nor working. The teacher course is helpful but not mandatory. The Fables Curriculum will guide you through everything. He also has an 8 hour course on you tube that can help too. I would not worry about buying the TWSS. Now the Fables Curriculum is gentle compared to the upper leveled themes. You might get done with it in a half a year. I am using for my 4th grader next year so he could find it easy.

@cottingtonmse Here, look at this video. This can get your started. You do not need the TWSS, kzfaq.info/get/bejne/Y9R7atV13tOXfoE.html

@@LivingWithEve ah, okay!!! thanks for your thoughts!!! so, maybe watching this 8-hour video will be enough?? LOL!!! i hate to think i am missing something about the whole process or acronyms and all sorts. i did e-mail IEW, but i will totally catch that video to see what i need to learn. but i shouldn't stress about not having TWSS? all righty!!! if i watch that and still feel like i don't know what's going on, i'll look into it. fables seems like fun, but i did feel bad when i realized it may be too young for my older kid. :O

I would do Bible Hero or community helpers for the second grader. You can also do fun and fascinating for the 5th grader.

Struggling writer in 7th grade. Could I use one of those books for LA and not get the whole system?

You could even consider the Structure and Style book too. It could work, or it may not. Look at some of the other flip throughs and see if it works. It could make all the difference, but it has to be right for you.

Could I use bible for 6 & 8th grader who have never had a writing curriculum?
@LivingWithEve
@LivingWithEve 2 жыл бұрын
It’s really hard to tell without personally knowing them or their developmental abilities. I will say Bible Hero’s is pretty simple. The oldest I’ve seen use it was a sixth grader and they thought is was pretty simple. It is a good kickstart and with a 6th and 8th grader they could finish it in a few month. However, I would start with another themed writing course, for example: American History or Narnia or even All things Fun and Fascinating. Hope that helps.

How many day a week did you do this and how long did each lesson take?

It varied. For K-2 we did three times a week and it lasted a School year. For 3rd & 4th we did every year and it lasted a little less than a full school year.

We are doing level B for middle school. I don't know Level A, but we are in love. I do NOTHING...except check his final paper and make sure he is keeping up his notebook. It's like IEW on Steroid. And I'm not just saying that.

How independent can they’ve in middle school? Can they do this themselves?
@LivingWithEve
@LivingWithEve 3 жыл бұрын
For Structure and Style he is pretty independent from what I understand. The theme based unit, I usually go through it with the to get them started. Maybe 15 minutes. But if they really need to do it independent and they are motivated, then yes. But you will need to check up on them.

I know IEW offers videos, are they necessary? Do you use them?
@LivingWithEve
@LivingWithEve 2 жыл бұрын
They have Structure and Style, which is a curriculum with build in videos via DVD or Streaming Forever. It's pretty new. Those videos are need for the curriculum. If you're talking about the Parent Seminar, they are useful, but not necessary. You can get alot from the teacher manual and watching some of Andrew's videos on KZfaq, listening to the IEW podcast, and talks that you can purchase on the IEW website.

You could probably use a journal and have the kids do the brainstorming ideas and outline in them. That's what I would do. The writing is always on your own paper.
