After looking at farming videos, I am convinced a farmer is 5% farmer and 95% mechanic, welder, electrician, economist, futurist, and overall handyman.

We use a 100 y.o. splicer from threshing machine days. And since you didn't have to take off the belt, you didn't have to Donkey Kong up into the baler to rethread it!

We use truck mudflaps on the drawbar. Have several found along the hiway. They work great!

Been there, done that. I even learned to pull a new belt in with the broken belt. And yes, I thought the splicing tool was expensive too. But it is cheaper than having a repairman to come and repair a broken belt in the field.

I bought 2 new belts maybe 3 years ago. Changed 1 out right away. So hopefully since I have a spare belt now. It will never break

Bailing hay has come such a long way. I remember riding on the tractor with my granddad and the hay would come out the shoot looking thing and there would be your bail. I remember him telling me his grandfather would do it with horses.

Interesting fix on the round baler, but a heck of a lot cheaper than buying and installing a new round baler belt! Thanks for explaining the process…may come in really handy some day too.

Great video. That little piece on your new laser is a clench to finish with. After the original install run that across the lacing to ensure a complete fix

A few hints if you don't have instructions: 1. The leading or dragging edge of the belt needs to have one more clip than the the following edge. 2. On the following edge, nip the corners at a long angle so that the following belt has @ 3/16" taper on each side. Keep your retaining wire through the lace tight, and fold the ends into these nipped tapers so that the wire is not wider than the belt. It keeps the edges from snagging if/when belt goes slack, like when just starting a roll or you pick up a heavier wad on one side of baler. Definitely prolongs life of the belts!

I have a JD 458 baler, I learned the hard way to keep the baler as clean as possible. I had an error code I could not get rid of until I washed the baler with a pressure washer. Had some shorting accros one of the sensors just because I blew a hydraulic hose and didn't wash the oil off. Hope that will help you. Good luck with hay season.

Hope the belt repair held, no further issues and the bailer cooperated to finish the field. Nothing more frustrating than the bailer breaking down in the field with 100 acres to go and unexpected rain coming in the next morning. Makes for a very long night.

got the same $200 lacer & fabbed up a portable vice rolls on casters stands about 3 1/2ft high when it tears next to the lace like that i just cut off the bad off re-lace it can get 2 repairs per belt before having to add length back. laced belts many times my baler they only tear if i overload im always in a hurry there's ALWAYS ALWAYS rain coming

That big round baker is one mean looking green machine. At 10:50 point in the video, when you opened it up for belt repair it almost looks like green jaws that are going to eat you up 👨🏻‍🌾🦖! We use alligator belt clamps jig. A little more money but they’re pretty strong and don’t need a vice just a hammer to smack in the pins put a new pin in and go. But those laces you did look good and clean

We always used a hammer on those clamps. Most held up, a few didn't but we usually had the same trouble you did - no vice handy where we needed it🙄 . That tool does seem like the way to go though IF you can get to a vice. Thanks for sharing.

I noticed when you were putting that pin in the drawbar, you were using the hammer strap. If you have hilly ground you can shear the pin or ruin the hitch on the baler. is does allow for angulation over hilly ground. You should only have three points of contact. Hammer strap and a male attachment on your implement. or a single male point from tractor and a double point on baler. What i do on my pickup because I think we both hired the same welder to make a truck draw bar is put the pin up from the bottom and stop and put the hair pin in before it goes through the top hole. Love to watch. I farm alone too about 50 acres. 55 cows. Gets real hectic at times. But I enjoy the challenges

When we would bale we always put the hitch pin in from the bottom, this way if the baler ever were to catch fire you pull the hitch pin and the pin just falls out and if there is tension you rock the tractor then it drops out and you don't have to unhook the pto if you have a longer pin.

Those are alligator splices.......I first used one about 40 years ago...the splice set was a cam over lever operated used to splice flat belts in a cotton gin....

Never saw that fix in a video till now. 😀

Shoups sels a portable splice vise. I had one for couple years now but luckily not had to use it yet.

Necessity is the mother of invention. What did you do to correct of the additional length of the splice?

Your neighbor would have been the first to know if your vice had fallen on your foot!

Tyler… I’m surprised you did NOT watch any KZfaq videos on this repair!!!

To this day, I hate belt balers. My old NH846 just works........no drama. Chain balers are king as far as I'm concerned. Not the tightest bales, but no downtime. Drawbar pin doesn't make a bit of difference. It will only drag so much hay. It doesn't mess up the windrow. I put up Haygrazer. 10 bales to the acre on 2 cuttings...........tall crop(high as the cab on the tractor), lots of long stems in the windrow.........no problems with the pin. The only problem with Haygrazer is the drydown. Takes 8 days..........no exceptions. Has to be turned at least once during the process.

Consider this )the way we do it) Cut the damaged belt. Lace another (old) belt on the one that needs repaired. Pull the damaged belt out while you let the old belt feed in. take the belt to be repaired to the vice and clamp the zipper. Connect the repaired belt to the old one pull the old one back through and the repaired belt is in place. Old damaged belts can be found in a lot of places and are generally free My2cents

I used to run new Holland balers up until a few years ago then I bought a John Deere and now it actually is easy, in fact it couldn't be easier. I didn't know there could be such a difference

They Wilton makes a vise that goes in a truck hitch that you could possibly put in you side by side’s hitch if it has one or just back your truck up to the bailer. Or if you have an older vise you can just make one by buying some square tubing and welding it to the vise. 🤷🏻‍♂️

I am imagining that taking the belts off and on must be a HUGE PAIN. I don't think I would like to try to wrestle with a vice like you did.

Just was baking with my JD baler today and noticed some teeth messed up on a belt. Hadn’t seen the splicer before I may try one if I can find one. Baling without a cab tractor, you are tough!

Never ran a round baler but looks pretty much like repairing conveyor belts. Need to get a vise mounted on your side by side for repairs like that

It all looks so dry from the get go. Is that really the most beneficial way 10 months from now? IDK, I am not a farmer and have never had your level of responsibility to a 80 herd. So I think you got it in the bag. It just seems like if I were a cow, why would a dry bale me more nutritious and/or desirable to me? I am sure there is a good reason, I would just love to understand it. Thank you😄! BTW, I live in SoCal, so I am super excited to know that we have a huge farming community upstate that really matters for us to get great, quality beef!!! Thank you on that count too!!!
