that's the "Andrea Riseborough effect"...... Davis and Deadwyler were taken for granted since they were (apparently) locked......you know how the story goes. So voters thought that a little bit of justice would make sense, so they picked a good performance by an actress in a low budget film, who wouldn't have a big company behind to pay for a propper Oscar campaign (as most of the nominee have). This is a game changer.

I gotta agree with you on this one. I was just plain shocked when I saw both Deadwyler & Davis iced out of the Oscars. Like wtf?! It kind of cancels out the "feel good" effect of the underdog Riseborough's nomination. One step forward, two steps back . . .

@@michelrodrigues5686 Nahhh! Not from a gospel according to your own personal opinion. Who do you want to win and who’s actually is going to win are two very different things. Both Blanchett and Yeoh performances deserve recognition. But in the great scheme of things, I believe Yeoh’s performance is more unique and extremely striking! Again, it’s just a matter of taste and personal preference. I hope I don’t get crucified for that lol 😆

@@user-CatherineDoddell! That's YOUR opinion. I'm not the only ONE who says she ABOVE everyone else. Someone who surpasses her OWN self having such a brilliant career makes her unique. Yeoh is great, but WRONG year for her to win. If you cry or feel moving for one's performance is just well, is just your own thing. Cate becomes a conductor! TECHNICALLY. She's the MOST deservent. But with all this Yeoh fanboys and girls out there. Not surprise at all.

@@michelrodrigues5686 I feel like I’ve been reading a play from a foreign language . Lol! It’s peculiarly “American or Latino” sense of privilege and entitlement your response displays, you obviously in a constant state of aggravation my dear, and by seeing Michelle Yeoh winning these awards races became far too unbearable for you. But thank you for that stimulating and thought provoking reply of yours. FYI, everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but I don’t think I have to conform or apologise for my personal views on these awards shows as much as I disagree with them. I believe we have to learn how to disagree in this country and not hate for it. That’s the beauty of free speech. I wouldn’t expect your type to understand that. But to employ a modern phrase, I’m afraid you must face the music.

@@ChrolliForever I’ve seen The Piano several times and thought Holly Hunter deserved her nomination but not the win. Angela’s role was far more demanding and dynamic and there’s a reason it’s been accepted as one of the most egregious snubbed performances. The emotional depth and intense physicality required to play Tina Turner was absolutely mesmerizing, especially since Angela only had a month to prepare for the role. I don’t care if she wins a “career Oscar” this year because she’s been extremely overlooked and never gives less that 100% on screen no matter how small the role

This is a cool idea. I don’t have too much of a wishlist of sorts as for every category, but for some of the major categories, I do have some favorites at the top of my list that I have in mind. Now, the list could change in some categories if I rewatch some of the films nominated from now and when the Academy Awards happen, maybe even after they’re over and I’m able to reflect on who all got nominated and who didn’t that should have been. My 2022 Academy Award Picks: Best Picture: Banshees of Inisherin Best Director: Martin McDough for Banshees of Inisherin Best Original Screenplay: Banshees of Inisherin Best Adapted Screenplay: Top Gun: Maverick Best Actor: Brendan Fraser in The Whale Best Actress: Cate Blanchett in Tár Best Supporting Actor: Brendan Gleeson in Banshees of Inisherin Best Supporting Actress: Kerry Condon in Banshees of Inisherin Best Original Score: John Williams for The Fablemans Best Original Song: Lady Gaga and BloodPop for Hold my Hand in Top Gun: Maverick Best Cinematography: James Friend for All Quiet on the Western Front Best Animated Film: Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio Best International Film: All Quiet on the Western Front Best Visual Effects: Avatar: The Way of Water Best Sound: Top Gun: Maverick Best Makeup: The Batman Again, some of the choices I have can change between now and the Oscars, but my list is going off of what I enjoyed and found to be the best in these categories and the categories I’ve not included are due to me not seeing either any or all of the films nominated. Thanks for the video Brian, this is really fun to see and think about. Take care!

We never see Cate's character coming to terms with who she is and what she's done. Yes she faces consequences, but we never see her either owning up to her misdeeds nor somehow trying to defend them. I suppose that's more on the writer than the actor, but it leaves me feeling both the character and the story are somehow incomplete. Michelle's character, on the other hand, is coming to terms with who she is through most of the movie, and reassessing her actions and relationships in the process. To me that makes her story much more fulfilling.

I watched the film two days ago. I don’t think the point in the end was her coming to terms with what she has done. But when she visits home and watches the videos she realizes how she loves the music and not just the status she had. So while the end is humiliating from a status perspective and her comeuppance it’s also about us and her realizing that it’s music what really what her life is about. And we can go back to when she was talking earlier about art vs artists and decide for ourself how we ought to go react to artists whose life we don’t approve of. Most people who had scandals never change and those in the past who died in different culture would not have often even thought of doing so. So I appreciate the movie giving us room to decide what to think. But her conclusion was wanting to work with music, even if it was video game music that she didn’t compose and could not time and where she didn’t have the power she had abused prior.

Dear Brian! I really enjoy your videos. So thank you for your devotion to your work. I respect your choices but if you vote for ,Tàr' as best picture and director, you really should give the best actress award to Cate Blanchett. She's the movie. Awarding ,Tàr' without Blanchett feels like awarding ,Birdman' as best picture without giving best actor to Michael Keaton (which feels still odd and unfair to this day). I understand that Michelle Yeoh has a beautiful narrative and delivers a very versatile performance but I predict that generations to come will study Cate Blanchett's work as a masterclass of dramatic acting. It leaves a lot of things concerning the character unanswered, which makes it the more fascinating in its ambiguity, while Yeoh's performance is clearly laid-out and leaves nothing open. Come on, Brian, be reasonable, fair and consequent and give it to Blanchett. Cheers

I don't completely understand the rubric that a lot of folks base the type of performance they believe Best Actor and Actress "should be." The quality of a performance is so subjective and so difficult to quantify, so people like to usually go off of "how dark and dramatic was this" and/or "how close did they get to imitating a real-life person." In Blanchett's case, it's the former. Yes, it's a deep and multilayered performance, but I just don't see why it is seen as so much more complex, skillful, and difficult than Yeoh's performance in EEAAO. Is it because Yeoh's performance has comedic elements and martial arts in it? Is it because it's in a genre film? Or is it because Cate Blanchett looks like 76 (not counting Blanchett's 2014 win or Halle Berry in 2002) of the 78 past Best Actress winners and people don't know how to react to or recognize a POC performer like Yeoh when they're so beautifully portraying the experience of a POC individual? I'm also tiring of the "my heart says Michelle, but my head says Cate" debate. We value logic and pragmatics so much more than our emotions, which is so funny when it comes to interpreting something like art. When I read or hear this, what I take away is "Blanchett's performance checks off all the technical boxes of what I've been conditioned to perceive as an Oscar-worthy performance, but Yeoh's performance made me feel things and made me laugh and cry all at once."

I been watching a lot of movie critic youtube videos and they says the same thing is they LOVE that movie, and I am here scratching my head is what they love about it? I mean I think it was a bit strange I get dark, but really odd. I love Collin Ferrell in almost everything he is in besides this movie.

Did the critics groups sweep for Farrell make him peak too soon with a (somehow) not-strong-enough narrative? (steady industry vet initially boosted by his modest sex appeal, on top of multiple stellar 2022 outings) Or did they always know Farrell was never going to win? This freaking depresses me-Colin Farrell’s _Banshees of Inisherin_ performance is as staggering as Casey Affleck’s _Manchester by the Sea_ performance, if not more since I vastly prefer Farrell’s film. :( Farrell has long earned the right to enjoy acting in both lead and supporting roles, elevating films with his reliable presence. I just can’t help but view a Butler win as a premature career peak, after which he’ll either settle disappointingly into unremarkable supporting roles like Malek, or languish in a diminishing franchise like Redmayne (barring the occasional _Good Nurse_ or _Trial of the Chicago 7_ turn).

Blue Fox. I’m heartbroken about Farrell’s failing to win BAFTA or Sag. His versatility in 4 performances last year, his extraordinary turn in Banshees, and his 25 years of mostly solid work over his career, and he STILL is going to be overlooked now? He’s won tons of critics awards and most of the festivals for his Banshees performance. 🤞🙏🍀 the Academy will acknowledge that his IS the best performance in the category.

@@TheAwardsContender Brian, I usually disagree with you in your choices, and have even accused you of being over enthusiastic about one particular film, but I am delighted to say I agree with you on a couple in this clip. 😏 Banshees is my choice for BP bcuz it has so much going for it in both performance and tech categories. (Why wasn’t Ben Davis nominated?!) But Tar is my #2. I recently watched it again, and, like Banshees, it has so many layers to unpeel, it’s fascinating. I liked AQOTWF but Not more than these two. HOORAY for your support for Colin Farrell! I had assumed pretty confidently that he would finally reap the awards he’s due after 25 years. And absolutely gobsmacked he’s falling to actors in two weak films. Butler does a nice impersonation but he was way over the top for my tastes. And Fraser just didn’t hold my interest. Repetitive angst, emoting, sobbing, all that. That his narrative will outweigh his performance really pisses me off. Two of your choices I definitely disagree with and, again, it has to be my preference for Banshees in BSAc, Condon, and BOScreen, McDonagh. For me, they are the very BEST in those categories.

I also don't think how you could pick Tar as the best movie and Todd Field as best director, but not Cate as best actress? That just doesn't make any sense to me. Cate Blanchett IS the movie. She carries the whole thing! But, I respect your opinion, and I do agree that Michelle Yeoh's performance is great. I think that EEAAO's success is by the ensemble cast, not Yeoh alone. As someone who didn't FULLY like any of the Best Picture nominees this year (I did like several of them IN PARTS), I have a different take. My Best Picture? Triangle of Sadness. If I could have removed some of the vomiting and edited down some conversations between the captain and the communist-hating fellow, I would have loved this movie and would consider it a great film. Some of my other picks are as follows: Actor - Austin Butler, easily Actress - Michelle Williams (because she needs an Oscar and should have had it for Blue Valentine or Manchester By the Sea) Supporting Actor - Brian Tyree Henry (I liked Causeway and Aftersun more than 9 of the Best Picture Nominees) Make-Up - The Whale The Rest? I basically have no strong opinion. What a strange year for the Oscars.

Margot Robbie’s costumes in Babylon are thrown off by her contemporary hairstyle. A 20’s starlet like Jean Harlow would absolutely wear those plunging necklines and shorts, but in combination with the loose hair, Robbie looks more like a 1970s Halston model. If the trailers had showed Robbie in a finger-waved bob, I think movie goers would have a better idea of the films setting and subject matter.

"EEAAO" was a complete flop in my country and it was released in 2022 and re-released 2 weeks ago. Here people are going to movies, to see blockbusters: "Avatar", "Quantumania", and "Puss in boots". The Oscar nominees flopped. Honestly, I don't understand why the Academy keeps awarding movies that flop in the box office or they're just medium success in the U.S.. that's not the way to elevate ratings. I'm not gonna watch it this year. "Babylon" is my favorite movie of the year (2023 because it was released in January) and got snubbed in almost everything. Successful films in box office like "Maverick" or "Elvis" are going to get one or two consolation prizes and that's it. If the Oscars are gonna aim only to a certain sector of the U.S. population, they shouldn't bother with broadcasting at all.

Saying Yeoh has a better performance than Charloze Theron, Natalie Portman, Helen Mirren, and Blanchett in their wins is such a blasfemy. Well, I rembember when people used to say the same about Marion in "Piaf", but then others came and beat that. That makes me feel people just go with the "fever" of the moment.
