In The Heights should have at least gotten supporting actress, editing snd cinematography. Lockdown really hurt this movie since it was supposed have been released summer of 2020.

I agree, Renate Reinsve absolutely should've been nominated. That whole movie practically rode on her shoulders, and would've faltered if she didn't deliver. And what's crazy is, she was apparently on the verge of quitting acting and going into carpentry when she got the call to star in TWPITW. In any case, it's good to hear that she's started getting some Hollywood roles too. I could see her pull a Noomi Rapace or Alicia Vikander in terms of Scandinavian actresses who make their way into Hollywood and establish themselves there as well as in their home country.

Ruth Negga was astounding in Passing. Her character reminded me a bit of Blanche DuBois in A Streetcar Named Desire.

Great picks, Brian. Mass is such a compelling and hard film to watch. It's such a well acted ensemble, it feels like you're watching a Broadway play instead of a movie. That movie deserved way more love in general 2 years ago. Ruth Negga was incredible in Passing and I was also annoyed that she missed the Oscar nom after making the precursors. Simon Rex was fantastic (and so enticing and attractive) in Red Rocket, which I saw during Omicron on Christmas Day, lol. He was always a long shot to make the Best Actor list, even though I was ecstatic to see him get the Independent Spirit Award. Renate Reinsve (& Anders Danielsen Lie) was great in The Worst Person In the World and would have been better than Nicole Kidman as an Oscar nom. So glad you mentioned Olga Merediz in In The Heights, her musical number in the movie was so good and devastating. I shed a tear over what happened to her character in the film. And Marlee Matlin & Mike Faist would have been worthy nominations. Thanks for another great video, Brian ❤

Mike Faist REINVENTED Riff. I mean, he just changed my perception of the character. He brought layers and depth I didn't think you could pull out of that character. I don't know what happened campaign-wise, but his performance was definitely cheated out of an Oscar nom. Crazy.

Jason Isaacs and especially Martha Plimpton are so devastating in Mass it’s stayed with me since I saw it on a plane. I cried almost the entire second half

Totally agree with you about Martha Plimpton. I really felt she was the standout in the cast and her performance, so natural and real, stayed with me a long time. I think people with a platform like you need to push these performances more. When I go to Gold Derby there seems to be no effort to move these great performances to the top of their lists. It's always wonderful to see a Brian Tyree Henry or Paul Mescal get into the nominations and we can't forget it does happen, but not nearly often enough.

Passing was phenomenal! And yes to Marlee Matlin. I haven't seen MASS but I will now.

I don’t usually get too upset with snubs, but I was pissed off when Mike Feist didn’t get nominated for Supporting Actor in “West Side Story”.

Mass is one of the most emotional movie I had ever seen. Really enjoy the performances and the story.

I am so glad Nicole Kidman got an Oscar nomination for her role in Being The Richardos. As Mark Kermode in his film review said " Her performance was weird but it worked" I totally agree with that.

Another two incredibly underrated performances which I’d have loved to see in Best Supporting Actor that year were Masaki Okada in Drive My Car and Simon Helberg in Annette. Two of the most haunting, captivating performances of the year to me. I get that Annette was probably just too weird for the Academy, but even with Drive My Car getting recognised across the categories, still no love for it in acting (which is possibly symptomatic of the Academy’s general reluctance to nominate non-US-famous actors in non-English films, but a disappointing snub in a disappointing trend all-round).

Jennifer Hudson in Respect was a HUGE snub.

Outside of Taron Egerton in Rocketman, I can’t think of a bigger Oscar snub than Negga not getting nominated for Passing.

1. Simon Rex in Red Rocket yeah! I was just thinking about this movie the other day and it's so good! One of the best of the year for me. 2. This makes me want to try watching Mass again. I had a few failed attempts, I think something about how personal the subject matter is made the writing and acting seem artificial to me. Or I just wasn't in the mood the times I tried. But it must be good. 3. Passing yes! I would have replaced everything Belfast was nominated for with Passing most likely.

Honestly, I wasn't crazy about the films you mentioned in the list to begin with. I just didn't connect with Red Rocket, Green Knight, Pig, Worst Person in the World, Mass and especially In the Heights.

My problem with Ruth Negga is that she was miscast ... there is no way in the time period that the movie took place that she would have been able to pass for white. She doesn't look white in this movie, Maybe it was really just a makeup issue but I am well aware of what a black person looked like who was able to pass for white.

I don't know what year it was but Sally Hawkins in "Maudie" was overlooked in a brilliant performance.

Tessa Thompson or Renate Reinsve would be a much better choice than Kidman

No Reinsve, no Negga, no Thompson, no Isaacs, no Dowd. So many good performances snubbed in favor of names who were bad in some cases. Sorry, no sorry, but Nicole Kidman had literally 59 accents in the two hours of BTR. Reinsve should have won the Academy Award that year.

Passing is a beautiful film . The book by Nellla Larsen is fantastic do yourself a favor and read it . Shout out to Rebecca Hall for shooting it in Black n White which she had to fight for . Andre Holland was awesome as well.
