If I Was Starting an Instagram Account in 2021 // Things I wish I'd known (Week 6)
In today's Mindset Monday video I want to share some things I wish I'd known when I was starting out on Instagram, so that you can avoid some of my mistakes I did and and instead focus on the things it takes to build a successful Instagram account in 2021.
Growing a following on Instagram is no simple task, but hopefully the tips and experiences I share in this video will help you see what really matters in the end to be able to grow a community and use Instagram to find your audience.
Finding your niche is important, but in the beginning I think it's actually better to try out and expreiment, because that's the best time to do it, and I'll tell you why in the video...
I spent so much time worrying about the numbers and comparing myself to bigger accounts when I was starting out on Instagram, even though, in the end, it's really not the numbers that will determine how successful you are.
I wish I'd spent that time and energy on creating and focusing on developing my skills instead, because those are the things that will set you apart form the competition in the end.
Right now Instagram Reels is the hot stuff so spending time and effort on creating those are a good idea, as the Instagram Algrithm seems to be favoring that content. But I wouldn't get too caught up in following the trends too much as I've learned that the thing that is most important online is to do things in your own distinctive style.

"Will you follow yourself?"- wow, that's a question I never thought. It puts things in a better perspective for me having a farther outlook of everything and thinking through my next steps.

It’s a scary wuestion but one that really puts things in perspective so we can take a step back and see things from the outside. So glad to hear it opened up new realisations for you ☺️ It’s a little bit of a harsh one but necessary to ask yourself I think when you want to craft a ”brand” and large account 🙃🙂

Ahww this is such a good video coming in the right time. I'm really struggling with instagram at the moment. I have a bookstagram and lately it feels like I 'must' post, 'must' make perfect aesthetics, the algorythm changed so much so the likes and follows went down a lot and I feel very demotivated. Maybe indeed it's better to find a style that shows more me, that make me happy, and not what I think that others want to see only :) I'm the creator, right? But I'm still struggling with nice filters/presets making for 4 years now. It's so so hard to get something you like.

@@larissabullen264 ahh I know how you feel. Don't give up! This week was such an insight for me. I was struggling and thinking of how and what.. but you know what? IG is hard these days with all the changing algorythms. So what we need? Having fun, like Kika does. Making photo's that makes US happy. And then the rest will come :) I hope you will keep the joy!

Kika - Thank you for creating this video. It is EXACTLY what I needed to hear. While you are specifically targeting Instagram content, this video really helped with my approach to KZfaq. I have been trying to get started but keep deleting my videos because I don’t think they are good enough. With you words of encouragement I’m going to approach it differently and accept that I’m on a journey. I appreciate your authenticity and all of your tips. Can I just say I love the editing of this particular video? Girl you're KILLING it! ♥ I personally wouldn't follow myself and I became aware of that last year as I put more effort into KZfaq. I realized I wasn't really giving anything of value, not even looks because I'd do a little bit of everything and people at first follow you because of 1 single thing. I'd speak about fashion, and books, and beauty and-- yeah, too much of everything. I ended up deciding on fashion but got caught up in thinking what was going to be my message exactly: on one side, I knew I wanted to show looks and my style, but on the other hand I'd also made a commitment to not buy more than 12 new clothes every year (sustainability and well, to basically get over my hoarding craziness) so going crazy on trying to convince people to acquire more things wasn't my thing. I gave it a lot of thought ever since the new year, and I came across the idea of "Creating outfits from an already big wardrobe", which is now on my bio. I basically want to share with people that you can make the most out of what you have by showing the same piece in different ways. I'm barely getting started in that sense, so I'm definitely at the quantity stage but with a lot of knowledge from my previous exploration phase ^^.

Thanks for this video! It's really helpful. I started an account as a photographer, but work as an accountant for a day job. There is SO much advice out there that you have to decide your niche from the beginning and I felt a lot of pressure to do this and it really hurt my brain haha I couldn't decide because I love to do so many different types of photography from fashion to portrait to street to couples. It wasn't until recently that I just gave myself permission to do what I wanted to do and experiment and naturally find my way there. I felt a relief almost. Sometimes all the advice out there on this stuff can really hinder people's growth even though it is meant to be helpful so thank you for saying to just experiment at the beginning and really naturally grow into a niche.

Thank you for the tips and inspiration. I have just unexpectedly stumbled into the world of re-selling clothing and home items and it is so wonderful. The community is so fantastic, and I am giving new lives to old or off cast items! I'm helping people feel good about their bodies, style, and homes. Thank you for this video :) usually your content encourages and inspires me and this time it also happened :) i am currently trying podcasting about less waste living and I have so many struggles there starting from "what my friends will tell" or "will they like it" to inventong new eposode graphic (which looks terrible every time I am trying doing my best :P). Cool that you’re doing a podcast, that is very brave and I love your topic ☺️🌱 The fear of what others will think can feel scary, but I’m sure you’ll notice that most people are actually really encouraging (or, they don’t care bc people are usually really busy ☺️). I’d recommed to look up some other Podcast cover art that you like and take inspiration from there. That usually works for me when trying to do graphic design which I think is sooo difficult 😬😅

I honestly would have followed myself on Instagram before everyone kept turning to me and going, "Diana you have to have a theme. Diana what's your aesthetic?" Honestly when I tried to go this route I was the most depleted and thought too much about Instagram when in reality... it's not that serious. As you said, in the beginning you should kind of post everything and then see what works. I wish I just stuck to my guns instead of starting to doubt myself and self-rejecting. Instead, I started to share more of my real self through IG stories, and I felt fake asf on my posts so I barely ever posted anymore. When I look at Instagram accounts that legit post only about 1 thing. For example, their room, but in a million different angles, the editing style is all the same, it blends together so much I don't even know what I'm looking at. Those type of accounts I step super far away from, and just cleaned out anyone that I follow that puts themselves in such a tiny tiny tiny box. I like real. I like raw. I like depth. I like variety. I like to read long captions. I like to read people who talk about their struggles or their wins. I like to engage with real humans not boxes. And I missed that part of myself, and it took years of self-rejecting to get back to me. What changed? I got out of a relationship. That was my problem, I started to doubt myself thanks to that relationship. It was unhealthy for me.

So creative 🙂 I have Instagram account since 2018 and I still haven't figured out what I want to achieve 😭 I just keep creating because I love it and sometimes sell some print, sometimes do conceptual shoot for a client but no purpose of my account (work) that I would be 100% sure about. And I feel that's stopping me from growing because I don't have idea how,where,in front of which people to market myself so it's just like half job done and it's frustrating. 😬 Any tips on how to find out what is it that I want to do with my work?? 😂

Hi Sara! Oh wow you’ve got lots of things going on for you! My advice would be to keep experimenting and sharing content and your art of your different accounts, and I’m quite sure you’ll start to see which one you enjoy the most and which one resonates with your audince the most too ☺️ I think in the long run, it will be tricky to try to keep so many different accounts going if you want to really build something larger and substantial, so then I’d probably start focus on one. But for now, enjoy the experimenting and sharing your passions ☺️

That is the first step in making it a reality!! ☺️😍😍 Sometimes just saying it out loud makes it feel more real and will make you take action towards it, even in small steps in the beginning but over time you’ll see how far you can go with small actions taken consistently over a long period of time ☺️

I am struggling to a) pick a niche b) find my aesthetic !!! I have SO many interests and I want to showcase them all. Sewing, photography, writing, art, etc. Can I develop a brand that is both dark (witchy steampunk) and light (romanticism)???? Do I have to pick ONE aesthetic and ONE topic in order to gain a following?? I'm struggling with this so much that most days I just sit and think....instead of working.

Hi Kyrie! I’d say yes, in the beginning if you want to grow and establish a brand that people recognise and get a clear understanding of what you’re about choosing a main niche or theme is important. BUT, when you’ve established that you can also experiment with other types of styles, as long ad you keep that main style clear and cohesive. Alternatively you could try to develop a style that mixes your interets and create something where these styles meet ☺️

@@Kutovakika I think I found a way to combine my ideas. I thought I came up with it LOL but apparently it's already a genre of photography! Juxtaposition photography. I am both light and dark, heavy and airy. This style will combine the two polar opposites that is me! TY TY for your reply. I've spent a LOT of time going over your responses to my questions. It was incredibly helpful and along with completing your challenge workbook, I feel more comfortable going forward!!!

Liked how you present that way you create compelling content. Thank you so much for sharing. Yes, asking " would you follow yourself" is a good one. The best way to teach people is by telling a TRUE story. Educational content is a must !!! Ah glad you asked :)) I first filmed my "present self", then did a wardrobe change and filmed my "past self". I made sure to not step over the "middle" line of the frmae while filming. Then I combined the clip sin Premier Pro (editing software I use) and used the Crop tool (in the effect panel) and cropped 50 of one of the clips and ta-daaa! I was in the frmae twice :))

Thank you for your tips. I am also struggeling with my IG. As I don't want to post only product Pictures and can't post Art works every week, it is very pressuring. Actually I am trying to post zwice a week for my grit and every now and then for stories or reels. But I don't get reels... my last post got over 900 views and then I posted another and there weren't even 10... I am stuck somehow. I don't get over 62 follows...

How is it fine for you to post tv series sketches? Doesn't that give you problems with copyright? I want to start a channel so I'm genuinely interested

You can post short pieces from other sources, you can read the specific KZfaq guidelines about using cooyright content online ☺️

It’s not about the numbers or followers or likes they way you are going to grow is by putting content out there and not giving a rubbish about the likes or following and don’t focus on the outcome but the progress

No worries.... only elites of the elites can say "Vulnerable" in fact i doubt even people i heard them say it really say this word - they just go VERNEBEL and ... we just know what it means without checking how they spell it out. As English is not my first language as well, when I first saw this word I thought it has something to do with Vultures.

Ooh, I'm such a perfectionist so it's been difficult to figure out my style etc. It feels like I need to know everything before even starting. It's great to hear that all the things will eventually fall into place. All I need to do is to be consistent. 😊 My goal with my Instagram is to support my journey to be more than just a hobby photographer. And also to live out my creative soul! I know how that desire to make everything perfect can sometimes get us stuck in moving forward. But my exprience has definitley been that the most important thing is to show up and keep going and eventually you’ll start to see what sticks nd works for you and your audience ☺️ I’ll come and say hi on Ig too 😍❤️

Hi Valentina! I know it can feel defeating when you put on lots of effort and don’t see those results in the numbers. I’d say focus on improving your photography and narrowing down on your style and niche. You’ve hor some beautiful pics on your account, went and had a sneak 😉 I think you could narrow your focus even more when you find what type pf photos you enjoy and that resonate with your followers so that you can make your account stand out even more clear, you’ve clearly got many visual interests 😌
