This is so cool!!! Amazing to hear all of that. The sounds you hear between 27:34 and 29:19 are elements of Janet’s signature sound. You can hear them on Nasty from control and all thru out many of the tracks on Rhythm Nation. It’s something the fans love to hear (I know I do)

My god, the way Jam & Lewis sampled is otherworldly. and this track has them sampling their work with Janet from other albums (sounds like Rhythm Nation) and this album (Throb, on Janet)... This song is such an incredible mash up of genres. You wouldn't think it'd work, but with their mastery, it does.

I really like this song but to me there was just a lot of ambient sounds coming from the drums and guitars. Never would've guessed Throb was sampled. To think it's a track from the same album.

Sampling from their own songs is one of my favorite techniques from Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis. They do this a lot and the way they use those samples is so unique. Something was definitely in the water in Minneapolis.

This gives me an even bigger appreciation for Jam & Lewis as producers along with Janet. The amount of time and creativity they put into the music. This has always been one of my favorite Janet songs and I had no idea how many sounds and instruments it is made up of. And her harmonies are out of this world. Thanks for sharing. 😀

28:33...It's a feeling. If one does have the "feeling" they sure would not choose these sounds. Jimmy and Terry just had the "feeling". Modern day producers really should study old pros like them to learn what it takes to move people.

Thank you so much for this! Had to wait a whole day to listen to this because i wanted to hear through headphones and not through the phones. It was absolutely amazing to hear the vocals, harmonies the beats and how they all come together! there were a some samples in there that i didn't know such as Rhythm Nation and Throb! The sounds that you hear at the beginning of MTV Live vocals (pumping herself up part lol) are her doing the dance moves which would you then hear in the performance itself. Some of the other sounds beats are more predominant in the remixes. Thanks again! I'd agree with Sean W that Love will never do should be the next Janet Stems reaction

This was cool, thanks for doing this. I'm kind of surprised with how "sloppy" some of the parts were, but then they all meld together. Some of them sounded like when I'm just experimenting with arranging an instrument, kind of "timid and unsure" in the performance and just trying things, lol (I know J & T don't like to quantize things, but still). I was also surprised with some of the vocals, as Janet is a stronger singer than they demonstrate (some parts sounded like when a singer doesn't know a song well yet and are still doing practice takes to get acquainted). Fwiw the loops probably wouldn't be panned like that in the mix because you'd have crazy phase issues in the kick drums of each loop (although they may have done some multiband imaging tricks to spread the higher frequencies while keeping the kicks down the center). I'm curious what they recorded this on, I'm assuming Neve to Tape? The raw tone sounds good, even on the 90's Nylon Guitar patch, super round and rich. Anyone know? Anyway, my two cents, would love to see you do more JJ tracks, subscribed, thank you Sir. 😎

@@luffegun I'm loving all these so much!! It reminds me how I used to try to replicate my favorite songs when I was a kid with a small electronic keyboard and a couple tape players and blank cassettes. I'd play one instrument line on the keyboard with a sound that was as close to the original as I could find and record it on the cassette, then rewind the tape and play it back while playing the next instrument , on the keyboard, along with my previous recording and have a second tape player record that. I went back and forth playing as many layers as I could until the air space was too distracting....if only I had a Daw back in 95' 🤣

Enjoying your song breakdowns. These tracks are very excessive which fits tone of song's message. Different but works together. Around minute 29, random instrumentation harks back to her song Nasty. Organ pads were really nice to listen to in isolation. I can see why samples are used - this song is a sample (excuse the lazy pun) of how to do it right - the sample is one of the most noticeable elements in the song and the moment you hear it you know it's the choreography segment with the chopping / box hands (not sure what that dance move is officially called). I must be a saint - I never noticed the throb track when listening to the final mix 😂 Janet's harmonies / vocals are amazing and thoughtfully put together here - maybe they could have been highlighted a bit more above the instruments but I think the excessive vibe is what was intended to fit with the message of the song and the layers of tracks.

All of those multitracks are from the remix she did for the 1993 MTV Video Music Awards performance. Some of the multitracks elements arent in the original LP Version, Extended Remix or other official commercially released remixes. You're correct. She redid the vocals for the live performance. The live remix is only available on a limited edition 2CD set. Would love to have it without audience screams. Does any of your multitracks include the slowed down version of her performance???

Not necessarily. There are some specific communities which share them but I don’t think it’s legal to straight up sell someone’s tracks for cash. I’m lucky for 2 reasons I don’t make anything off this channel not probably ever will and I’m using slithers of individual instruments over the course of 30 to 60 mins to creat a brand new piece of content based on my reaction to a subject. Great question!

I wonder if it is just a vocal sample they used while making the record. They did stuff like this on the RN album too, borrowing parts from Control. If was one of the first tunes recorded on the album I believe. Janet wrote this song in a meeting room at Virgin Records by herself on a notepad apparently.

Complete newbie here and totally amateur (so apologies if this is a naive question). How did you get the multitrack stuff to open (i.e. did you open a file from a CD and it came like that or did you have to go through and isolate the stuff). In other words, is there an "easy" way to just open a file (CD, MP3, etc.) and see the bits and pieces?
@luffegun
@luffegun Жыл бұрын
Not at all Ryan! Great question. I have access to the multitracks files which come in a few different forms depending on the source or intended use. They will come as either multiple mono audio files all exactly the same length and they just drop into my recording/mixing software in this case Logic on Mac. Sometimes I get the actual ProTools session files and have to convert them from my old hackintosh running Protools 10 or 11 and sometimes I get bounced stereo stems (stems meaning STEREO MIXES and also deriving the tree branch analogy from this) if they come in that stem form then the session I have normally was intended for DJ remix versions or are sent out to other artists on those labels to create mashups or alternate mixes of the song. I’d love it if they were all original full sessions but sometimes you have to take what you can get. I’ve used contacts from my time on the industry and a few other means to get these and they are harder and harder to come by. Probably of my own doing as I’ve done more of these types of videos than anyone else and I’m sure someone has tightened the belt on their availability due to the sheer volume of copyright claims I have had from the major labels on these videos haha. But hey, Here we are talking about a frankly quite old song again so for my money that is a good thing. Thanks so much for watching Ryan. Much appreciated dude!
